Neil Bantleman : Nightmare in Indonesia - the fifth estate

  • Neil Bantleman and his wife were in search of adventure when they went to teach at a prestigious private school in Jakarta. But then came the horrifying accusation from a parent who believed her boy had been sexually abused by staff at the school. It set off an never-ending nightmare for the two Canadians. Last April, Neil Bantleman was convicted of sex assault. Though he won on appeal, he now awaits the ruling of Indonesia's top court and prays that one day they will be free to leave Indonesia and put to rest the terrible nightmare.

      Good luck with that. This kind of thing goes way back and is institutional, a sort of "job" without a person having to get a real job because there aren't any left. There are way too many people there and that is the underlying problem. Free fertility visits, free condoms and free wanted sterilizations would help.

      I had a chance to work with local government for a high profile across global business deal. Over the course of 13 months of discussions and negotiations, I discovered most local agencies I encountered were either unreliable or corrupted. Oftentimes, some high ranked officials could simply change rules and requirements without our knowledge albeit written binding rulings have been issued. They rarely honored written agreements they made. Every time when a so-called new "law/requirement" implemented, its admission /application fee would also increase and yet they required us to deposit money only to their selected local banks.

Furthermore, the saying "innocent till proven guilty" does not really apply here, especially in high profile cases, like this one, where public opinion and money tends to win over the evidence or lack there of, in this case. Public opinion is formed via the media, media has the responsibility to tell the TRUTH, not sensationalizing contents for ratings, which media nowdays seems to forget.

    I lived in Indonesia for a year back in the eighties. When I was there it was a common occurrence for suspected petty criminals to be found dead floating in drainage canals with their hands bound behind their backs using zip ties of a certain color that everybody knew was an unofficial yet recognized trademark of the police. That's how justice worked. Faster and more cost effective than court trials but a greater margin of error. What convicted all the suspects in this case was the publicity. The police had to convict somebody. And once they convicted some poor Indonesians they had to convict some foreigners as well to restore a sense of balance.

    • @RC-xc4fx
      @RC-xc4fx Před 8 lety +18

      +LelouchL3 Both of those things were utilized. Neil passed 3 lie detector tests, as did Ferdi. This was dismissed by the panel of judges, as was numerous testimony from expert forensic child psychologists who worked with the children after the accusations were made, and said the children did not display behaviours consistent with trauma. What's also important to note is that tests were performed on the children to examine for signs of sexual abuse, not just testing for Herpes (of which Neil and Ferdi were tested, both negative. If the children were indeed sodomized multiple times per day, over a period of months by EIGHT suspects, there would be physical signs to prove it.) The results of multiple anoscopies came back negative, meaning the children were not sodomized in any way. All of this, as well as numerous other forms of evidence in support of Neil and Ferdi's case was rejected by the judges panel.Not to mention that the prosecutor couldn't even identify when or where the alleged crimes took place. The indictment literally states, "At a time and place that can no longer be recalled with certainty, somewhere with in South Jakarta during 2014-2015...the accused are being tried for sexual assault". It's crazy. No proof, no timeline, no evidence, yet.....guilty? It's heartbreaking. Unfortunately, there are SO many inconsistencies that have taken place with this case, that CBC couldn't address all of it in a one-hour segment. Thank you for also wanting to understand the case, and the search for truth and justice. So many are quick to assume guilt without looking into the situation.

I know it is not Indonesia, but the systems are similar and if your face doesn't fit when a crime has been committed you can languish in jail for years before your trial is even brought to court.
