This is great. I was just eyeing the india inks at the art stoer the other day and was not sure what I would do with it but I'm interested and this looks like a great addition to my watercolor paintings i do, too! thank you for the inspiration!
Thanks very much. Acrylic ink works well too
Thanks for posting this! I've been looking for watercolor artists using ink as an underpainting.
Thanks Thomas. Hope you found it useful
@@ChrisStephenArt For me, this was more than useful, as well as inspiring. Thank you.
@@Bearwithme560 That’s great. Thank you for watching
magnifico
Grazie!
This is so beautiful, and such an inspiration! I did something similar (first for me) with acrylic ink and mijello water colors. Love it, can't wait to keep learning. Thank you so very much!
Thanks!! Acrylic inks work pretty much the same. It’s always fun to experiment.
Göttlich!!!
Thank you
Just ordered the ink and bamboo pens, so excited to try this! Beautiful!!!
Great !! Please give me credit and tag me on social media if you do a copy of my work. I’d love to what you come up with 😊

Bonjour...
As an indian i am proud
Wonderful, thank you so much
I love this SO MUCH. I've watched this ten times, I've purchased everything, (using a stick from a tree right now, waiting on the bamboo pens). I can't even come close to what you've created. OMGosh, so beautiful!!!
Thanks Lisa !! Just go with the flow and let the ink and water do their thing. You’ll create your own fantastic painting 😌
Thank you. I think I had way too much water on my paper because it just blew out into a giant circle. Back to my misting bottle.
@@lisashamhartmaughmer5258 Yes, possibly too much water. You could try putting some ink on the paper and spraying as you go to get the effect you want
What tools ? I need to order
@@kendadavis7714 You don’t really need anything specific, any waterproof ink will work, I used Indian / India ink for this, but acrylic ink is also good. A dip pen of some kind is useful but not essential, you could get a metal or bamboo one. You could shape a stick with a craft knife, that works well, I have a video showing me make one. I’ll send you a link
Мы подобные работы делали с детьми ещё в 1980 году!
И даже интереснее. Я об этом писала в своей докторской диссертации и в книге - "Графика, первые шаги".
Truly inspirational! My bamboo pens and Indian ink is being delivered today and I can't wait to get started.
I think I know the answer to this question, but are you working on a flat or angled surface please? I tend to start off at an angle and then lie the board flat, but the water all tends to pool at the bottom of the paper and dry out quickly at the top. I'm just wondering if you can still get those effects on the trees if the paper is flat throughout. Thanks and keep posting.
Hi Lorna. I usually keep the board at an angle, but will occasionally lay it flat if needed. The effect will still work, it’s mainly about water content and the mist bottle. Just experiment and enjoy the process!!
so beautiful but i can see faces at bottom of trees . love the mystrey
Thanks!!
Absolutely fantastic idea, can the ink be diluted with bottled water for distant trees and shrubbery?
Thank you. Yes, absolutely the ink dilutes well with a spray bottle.
Love it! Are you using a bamboo pen?
Thank you 😊 Yes, I used a bamboo pen for the ink.
HELLO CHRISTOPHER YOU JUST SHOWED TO ME WHAT I BEEN WANTING TO DO BUT, I WAS NOT SURE OF HOW THOSE TYPES OF PAINTING WAS DONE OR EVEN NAMED BECAUSE I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THAT TYPE OF PAINTING IS NAMED AND YOUR PAINTING WAS WELL DONE AFTER SEEING YOIUR VIDEO
Thanks very much. Glad you liked the video
Creepy and most beautiful at the same time
Thank you
Love your art, im inspired to try this. Just wondering if you use botanical inks? Ive bought a few lately and like the unpredictability of them.
Thanks!! I’ve not tried botanical inks, are they waterproof?
@@ChrisStephenArtsome are, they are all very different. I've got rust, copper, and some from.leaves, oak galls, walnut. They act differently on different types of paper :)
@@lizcharalambous9150 That all sounds very interesting, I’ve seen people make their own from walnut shells, which look great. I may have to find some for myself.
Loved this. Have you done anything with the Kakamori brass nibs?
Thanks very much. I haven’t seen them before, I would be intrigued to see how they work.
@@ChrisStephenArt lots of CZcamss out there. Loving it
Do you use other ink colors such as sepia? Or do you stick to black and use washes only for color?
I only used black for this one. All colour is a watercolour wash
Thank you Mr Stephen, inspirational! How do you watercolour on ink without 'pulling' the ink with the wet brush? Is it a quality of India ink in particular?
Thanks again. Wonderful.
You’re welcome Alistair, thank you for watching. Indian Ink is waterproof once dry, acrylic ink also works well for this technique
@@ChrisStephenArt thank you so much. Fascinating stuff!
Just curious. Do you usually just use ink as a second medium with the watercolor or do you also paint with just ink?
Good question. I’ve only really used ink as an under painting, essentially just for the darker areas. I suppose you could use just ink if you had more colours. I may give that a try!!
If you are thinking about doing that, you will be amazed at some of the unusual techniques that are being used with different types of inks. For instance, some fountain pen inks and using bleach. Or, alcohol inks and using a wash with alcohol, etc. I really want to try some of these techniques but am living in Central America and have not found any of these types of inks. I will purchase some on my next visit to the USA.

Stunning work! Where can I find that bamboo dip pen you’re using? Thanks!
Thanks very much. I think it was from Jackson’s Art
I've never seen this technique before. It's very beautiful. But all I have is India (not Indian) ink. Is there a difference?
Thanks, Vince. Indian and India ink are the same thing. This technique also works with acrylic inks.
How wet did you get the paper? Is it cold pressed paper? Do you know how I can get the tops of trees to resemble evergreen trees? I get it sometimes, but usually not.
Hi Mary, I only wet the paper enough to let the ink start to flow. With regards to painting evergreens, the best thing to do is sketch them repeatedly with a pencil, until you get it right. It’s all about practice
The instructions for all Winsor and Newton inks say to use distilled water to dilute otherwise pigment splits. What do you use?
Hi Jane, I’ve only ever used normal water from the tap. Never had any problems.
@ChrisStephenArt thank you, Chris, that's good to know
@@janerogers5717 You’re welcome!
Que papel usa?
I used Bockingford for this painting
Which handmade paper you used, may I know Sir.
Of course. I didn’t use handmade paper for this painting, it’s Bockingford 140lb cold pressed. A good cheaper alternative
Is anybody else having a tough go at this amazing Art work? I'm using Winsor Newton Ink. 140 pound Canson paper, any help would be appreciated. thank you. Maybe Cotton paper would help?
Hi Steve, Paper probably won’t make too much difference for this, I used Bockingford. One piece of advice I would give is don’t try and copy my painting, use the technique to create your own artwork.
@@ChrisStephenArt Thank you so much Chris. I used distilled water and it's either to wet or to dry and there is no spread. I've let the water settle into the paper. Still no luck! I will keep trying. Thank again for getting back to me. You are a amazing Artist. A+ I really love your work.
@@stevereedy420 You’re welcome, Steve. I’ve never used distilled, just regular tap water. Maybe that could make a difference?
@@ChrisStephenArt Thank you for getting back.Have a great day!
I loved it before you added the water colour
Great stuff. But it's India ink, not Indian.
Thanks David. I beg to differ, it’s called Winsor & Newton Indian Ink. Here’s a link to their website. www.winsornewton.com/uk/graphic-art/inks/drawing-inks/?attribute_pa_wn_colour_name=black-indian-ink&attribute_pa_wn_colour_size=14ml&sku=094376905311
Only ink was best. Stop the painting at 06.00. It is great. No need for colour. Color makes it boring.😢😢
Not sure I agree with you, but thanks for the feedback 😊
Amazing!!! How come that tape comes off the paper so easily?
Thanks very much. I use low tack masking tape
