      Sand Ferns that what we always called it when I was growing up too. I got a lot of comments about how it is turmeric and not saffron, so I thought I’d clarify here 😊

      We all grew up calling it Saffron until we learned what genuine saffron really is. The Muslims, because of the Persian influence, knew what saffron really is. Maybe someday we will find the link between the colonial British influence on Indian Christian nomenclature. In Portugal it has always been known as "Açafrão da Índia" meaning saffron of India. Hence the logical result of the Goans calling it saffron and influencing the rest of the Christian community in, the then, India.

    This is the very best recipe for meatball curry that I have come across. And the way you explain everything is so wonderful. Adding of Worcestershire sauce is unique and gives a lovely flavour to cutlets and meatballs 👍👌😉 Thank you so much Trisha

    i want to try it out !!
    For the Meatballs -
    1/2 kg beef mince (ground beef)
    1 medium onion, finely chopped
    1-2 green or red chillies, finely chopped
    2 tbsp fresh coriander leaves and stalks, finely chopped
    Salt, to taste
    1/4 tsp turmeric powder
    1/2-1 tsp red chilly powder
    1 egg
    1 tbsp worcestershire sauce (optional, though it does add good flavor)
    Mix all the ingredients together.
    Form the meatballs and set aside.
    For the curry -
    1 small onion, finely chopped
    6 curry leaves
    2 tbsp oil
    Salt, to taste
    Tamarind, to taste (Soak tamarind in warm water to form a pulp)
    Fresh coriander leaves and stalks, finely chopped
    1 large potato, peeled and cut into large cubes
    Grind to a fine, smooth paste (masala) using a little water -
    8 Kashmiri chillies (dry red chillies, mildly spiced, but used for its vibrant color)
    4 Bedki chillies (dry red chillies, spicy)
    3 large cloves garlic
    1 tsp cumin seeds
    6 cloves
    10 black pepper corns
    2″ cinnamon
    1/3 tsp turmeric powder
    1 tomato

    Hi I like your recipe, but since I don't have Worcestershire sauce can I use barbecue sauce

      Benny D'Souza you can leave out the Worcestershire sauce, you will still get a really delicious curry. If you like, u can add a little vinegar and a pinch or two of sugar instead.

    For the masala, you mentioned saffron powder, I think it would be Turmeric powder, if not mistaken.

    I remember in my childhood, I had learnt this recipe. We used to slightly fry the meat balls in oil before adding them to the curry. Should I fry them?

      Hi there, if that's something you've always done and you'd like to do, please go ahead. It wont affect the recipe much. This recipe doesn't really need it though.

      Thanks Bella. I'm using a Phillips blender. Its the 'Super Silent 600W' model. I'm not sure if it's available in the USA. Its a trusty old machine that I've had for more than 12 years now.

      Thank you Janet. Try adding a little sugar to the curry. A couple of pinches. Taste and add more, if it helps.

      You can, but maybe add a touch of sweetness (jaggery, sugar etc.) just to balance it out.

      No sure what you mean? If the meatballs are cooked, simply prepare the curry and add the meatballs in. If not, you can choose to lightly fry the meatballs before adding in it. Hope this helps.

      Hi Blossom, I've never washed mince or ground meat. I just use it straight away. If you're concerned about hygiene, maybe consider buying a piece of meat, wash it and then grind it down or mince it at home.

      Norma, tamarind adds a nice flavor and if you have it, I would recommend adding it. However, you can still make the curry without it, if you dont have any. Just adjust the sourness accordingly and maybe add a couple of pinches of sugar (or to taste), to round off the flavor.
