Shane Roper John can play any type, any kind of character... From the most hilarious to the most deadpan serious... I see he places himself back into comedy as he is in now in the holiday movie, Daddy's Home 2 with Will Ferrell, Mark Walhberg, Mel Gibson, and John Cena... Lithgow looney-ness abounds!
I have a feeling John was thinking about how to make this scene 10× funnier and he immediately thought of very tight squeaky leather pants without telling anyone and it worked like crazy
What makes this so damn hysterical is that the leather pants are never established in an earlier scene. It was all about him wanting to look younger by coloring his hair. The fact that he decided to randomly put on leather pants just made it fifty times as funny. 😂
Lithgow chose the pants on purpose, none of that was previously setup in script initially. It was a same day rewrite because of his insistence. They had rehearsed something about his hair at first, but I could be remembering the interview wrong. Jane absolutely lost her ability to control herself at all, and they lost the magic on reshoots. Lithgow wasn't supposed to pose before he left the scene, but it happened the way it did because of the pants.
I remember watching this on TV for the first time, I was laughing so hard I was crying and missed the next 5 minutes of the episode... Stands out like Derek Trotter falling through the bar in only fools and horses.
This scene is pure brilliance! I honestly don’t know how they got through it. 😂 Jane Curtain clearly didn’t, and I’m guessing this is the best take they could get, LOL! John Lithgow deserved an Emmy just for this scene alone! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
People not understanding the significance of Jane Curtin breaking character. She's a consummate professional at playing the Straight Woman role. She's had practice with some of the greats of comedy, during her days in the Golden Era of SNL alongside Murray, Aykroyd and Belushi. 3rd Rock is one of the few times in her career where she quite often breaks character.
This reminds me the scene from Seinfeld when Kramer puts on slim jeans and later can’t take them off and Jerry ends up trying to help him out of them. I wish I was sitting in the audience to witness these great shows 😀 These actors are geniuses👍🏻
Loved this show growing up and i still laugh I still can't keep a straight face with this. One of the best sitcoms ever, I'd love to see a reboot series where Tommy is High Commander and he has a new family and they see us in modern day.
I honestly don't know how this show got made. How did Jane make it through these scenes without bursting into laughter at every moment. I can't stop laughing when I watch the show. Watching it with my son and we just kill ourselves every episode.
michael richard never seen the Crown, seen Harry and the Hendersons but however I always wanted to see the Santa Claus movie staring Dudley Moore it sounds interesting.
He is now in that goofy sequel to 'Daddy's Home', 'Daddy's Home 2' with Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and Mel Gibson... The kiss scene he did with Will in the trailer was creepy, but hilarious...
OMG whoever isn’t laughing at the first squeak of those pants you’re as Alien as Dick is supposed to be lol 😂 just the best laugh ever 😂😂😂 and it puts Ross on Friends to shame lol
There is a very special and unique brand of actor that can be the most hilariously FUNNY character or the absolute SCARIEST EVIL BAD GUY IMAGINABLE! There are only a select few who I have seen accomplish this. Those that come to mind are Donald Sutherland in Backdraft and as President Snow and Striker in Salem's Lot and then Animal House and The Dirty Dozen for comedy. The others are Christopher Walken in True Romance, Last Man Standing and Prophecy to name a few and Pulp Fiction, Mousehunt and the SNL Cow Bell skit. John Lithgow in Cliffhanger and Dexter and then 3rd Rock from the Sun. Lastly, Steve Buscemi in Con Air, The Sopranos and Boardwalk and Big Daddy, Armageddon and Mr. Deeds. Certainly there are other examples for each of these and other actors who may also qualify but these four definitely belong to this royalty among actors!
every morning when i look in the mirror and i think at these scene and say .... ooohw my god iam gorgeous ......and then i laugh . my girlfreind thinks iam a wierdo but i don't care . i just love this show
I’d like to think that neither Simbi Khali nor Jane Curtain were told about the hair or the pants before the scene, just to keep their reactions genuine.
It stayed funny for the entire run. Yeah there were some episodes that weren’t up to standard, but they all served a purpose and at least they ended the show.
Why don't they make these american sitcoms anymore??? I remember watching these shows as a teenager sometimes crying laughing, we just don't get these shows anymore
John Lithgow is one of the best actors in history of actors. He nails this series. The other people were great too...
Mr. Hannes i have seen that movie with my girlfriend. It was a very funny movie.
Even his roles in Dexter and The Crown (and other drama movies) are great.
he absolutely has no shame..lol..
He's really good in Dexter as well. They guy has a big range.
Jane Curtin's inability to contain her laughter was genuine
So did so well to hold it together as well as she did. How John Lithgow was able to keep a straight face all the way is beyond me
This is one of the best comedy sitcoms ever made. I have every episode on dvd. I grew up watching this show.
I have a feeling John was thinking about how to make this scene 10× funnier and he immediately thought of very tight squeaky leather pants without telling anyone and it worked like crazy
Lithgow always played that character like high opera. Brilliant.
What makes this so damn hysterical is that the leather pants are never established in an earlier scene. It was all about him wanting to look younger by coloring his hair. The fact that he decided to randomly put on leather pants just made it fifty times as funny. 😂

Nina and Mary's laughs were soooo real in this, this episode cracked me up so much, John Lithgow is brilliant
Good god this show is classic. Lithgow's cadence and delivery as Dick Solomon was like 80-percent of the show's humor.
No wonder John won *three* Emmy Awards for the show 🏆🏆🏆
After all these years it still makes me belly laugh, John Lithgow was amazing.
I remember watching this on TV for the first time, I was laughing so hard I was crying and missed the next 5 minutes of the episode... Stands out like Derek Trotter falling through the bar in only fools and horses.
Jane's laugh is 100% real.
How could it not be? This scene is hilarious.
Actually Jane's real time laugh made the skit even funnier.
The Damn Beast yes 😆
Right? No way that was acting, she was for real laughing! haha
You can even see her eyes getting teared up!
How he was able to stand there with a straight face is beyond me.
Who knows
He’s one hell of an actor, very underrated
He was moving that way to make that noise on purpose
His face looks like he's fighting hard to stay in character
After many, many takes l’m sure 😂
This scene is pure brilliance! I honestly don’t know how they got through it. 😂 Jane Curtain clearly didn’t, and I’m guessing this is the best take they could get, LOL! John Lithgow deserved an Emmy just for this scene alone! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Those two had amazing chemistry.
Basil Fawlty, Dick Solomon, Frasier Crane....we'll never have sitcoms like these again and that's a damn shame.
One of my favorite tv scenes of all time. Possibly only beaten by the Newhart shows finality. "It's a hallmark". "A HALLMARK OF DEGRADATION"!
"I'm leaving! While I still have my dignity..."
Squeak!!! goes the leather.😂😂😂😂
ErinOcelotl :3 i love that Jane finally went to pieces as he left.
Jane cracking up during the entirety of this scene is priceless, I wonder if this scene had outtakes..
I love how his leather pants squeak, lol.
How can John Lithgow keep a straight face?!
Very difficulty
He’s the American John Cleese
I swear
He's an experienced comedic actor.
He's a legend
God this show was so freaking funny . Miss it
Those 3 min are funnier than the whole big bang garbage sitcom
People not understanding the significance of Jane Curtin breaking character. She's a consummate professional at playing the Straight Woman role. Greatest scene from a brilliant show.
This is my favorite episode and i was a fan from the start. Great physical comedy and no holds barred writing.
That scean damn near killed me. That’s true raw comedy
Justin Stojanoski-pearson Amen lol
I like that you edited this comment and it still says 'scean'.
She wasnt acting, she really was supresing her laugh.
Amazing comedy, but highly undervalued
This whole scene is basically an outtake and I love that they went with it 😂
This reminds me the scene from Seinfeld when Kramer puts on slim jeans and later can’t take them off and Jerry ends up trying to help him out of them. I wish I was sitting in the audience to witness these great shows 😀 These actors are geniuses👍🏻
1:32 she breaks character off screen laughing 😂
I would have too!
John Lithgow nearly did as well
I love when they break character
And then John Lithgow introduced all of us to .......The Trinity killer
I remember watching this episode more than a decade ago. It was my favorite show.
Oh man you can't keep a straight face with this
Search for a pandemic Zoom convo between John and Joseph Gordon-Levitt--- it's very sweet, and Joe says to John, "Oh my God! You're gorgeous!" 😂
The Greatness of Dick Solomon!! :)
A very unique series - never gets old - never makes me stop laughing
You could NOT tell Dick was did not look good. He look in a mirror and knew he was fine! Lol 😂🤣😂
I remember watching this show after doing my homework every night around 1am. Best show in modern history.
VHS replay?
The pure will power trying not to laugh her ass off lmao
I'm so glad I was alive to experience this show when it aired
Her reactions are priceless 😂😂😂😂
John Lithgow is one of my most favorite actors of all
One of the funniest scenes ever! Glad I found it. This could be up for SNL
" A Hallmark of degradation!"
"'...old and wrinkled.'"
"Well, I want no part of it! I'm leaving......While I still have my dignity!"
The best actor ever!!! "Whenever you're feeling down. Watch this. It usually helps me" - yes me too!!! :-)
"Oh my GOD!! I'm GORGEOUS!!"
One of the funniest sketches in Sitcom history.
Loved this show growing up and i still laugh
I still can't keep a straight face with this. One of the best sitcoms ever, I'd love to see a reboot series where Tommy is High Commander and he has a new family and they see us in modern day.
Tommy was the oldest of the aliens, part of the joke being they out him in the youngest human body!
Absolutely the funniest sitcom of that time, of all time. I'm just saying.
1990's tv at it's best!
The best show ever.. watched every episode.. this was definitely one of my favs
In a world where no one uses the envelope that comes with
the greeting card...😜
It's kind of useless in most instances really.
awesome awesome show
this is one of my fave hits tv show I'm turning 25 this year and I am still enjoying this show 😭❤
I remember when the show came out,it was so funny i couldn't wait for the next week to watch it again . My all time favorite show !
Greatest show on earth
It always makes me laugh, too!!!! So funny!!!
Lithgow is the ultimate straight man. I wonder how many takes it took to film this scene.
I honestly don't know how this show got made. How did Jane make it through these scenes without bursting into laughter at every moment. I can't stop laughing when I watch the show. Watching it with my son and we just kill ourselves every episode.
omg I can't get enough of this I wish they bring it back
John Arthur Lithgow gotta to love his work as Richard (Dick) Solomon the alien leader high comander in 3rd Rock From the Sun and Lord Faquard in Shrek
And Winston Churchill of The Crown, his part in Harry and the Hendersons, and The Santa Clause Movie.
michael richard never seen the Crown, seen Harry and the Hendersons but however I always wanted to see the Santa Claus movie staring Dudley Moore it sounds interesting.
Cool. I remember watching it as a kid I think he was pretty good on it.
The Crown is brilliant too.
I've always liked John Lithgow.
He is now in that goofy sequel to 'Daddy's Home', 'Daddy's Home 2' with Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, and Mel Gibson... The kiss scene he did with Will in the trailer was creepy, but hilarious...
@@odiemodie1 I seen that movie at the theater with my girlfriend.
What made this show even funnier is sometimes the other cast members didn't know what was gonna happen so when they're laughing it's legit
She was really laughing.
OMG whoever isn’t laughing at the first squeak of those pants you’re as Alien as Dick is supposed to be lol 😂 just the best laugh ever 😂😂😂 and it puts Ross on Friends to shame lol

Noisy pants! 😂😂😂😂
0:03 *Oh my GOD!! IM GORGEOUS 😂😂😂*
0:02...I say the same thing everytime I finish my cereal bowl in the morning.
every morning when i look in the mirror and i think at these scene and say .... ooohw my god iam gorgeous ......and then i laugh . my girlfreind thinks iam a wierdo but i don't care . i just love this show
I think its time to show it(the show) to her..
It’s crazy how this guy is also the Trinity Killer from Dexter lol.
My dad and I used to love this scene 🤣
EXACTLY HOW I FEEL 1ST THING IN THE MORNING!HAHA
The spueaky pants scenes are really funny in slow motion. 0.5x 👖😂😂😂
By looking at this scene it seems like this was the closest that they could complete the scene.
Everybody's talking about his tight pants, he's got his tight pants on.
You can tell Lithgow is moving like that on purpose
Jeden z lepszych, jak nie najlepszy serial ever. 🙂😉
The best the best
1:44. You can tell he's trying very hard not to lose it laughing.
Now we all know where the Ken walk came from 😅😅😅
This is the best thing I've ever seen
This type of attitude 😄🧡🧡🧡🧡
Are there any outakes/bloopers from this scene (not that they are needed)? ;-)
I swear mary was going to burst out laughing, and so was dick! My god those tight awful black leather pants! 🤣🤣🤣
I’d like to think that neither Simbi Khali nor Jane Curtain were told about the hair or the pants before the scene, just to keep their reactions genuine.
I could only imagine how many takes this scene took to do, more than a dozen at least 🤣
Just too funny.
Weirdest damn tie I've ever seen.
1990 tie. It was a thing
Ever notice most of Dick's ties were too short? 👔
dnasty312 he is pretty tall, they probably just used regular ones and it added to the weirdness
Theh probably did more than 100 take on this one 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Lord Farquaad has left the building!
The show dipped in quality very quickly but damn it was fucking hilarious in the first couple of seasons
I think what made it funny to me was how they reacted to life on earth, later it became about other things, which was meh.
It stayed funny for the entire run. Yeah there were some episodes that weren’t up to standard, but they all served a purpose and at least they ended the show.
That's how I feel when I had my haircut.
From ricochet to this John has range
He looks almost like the "Ricochet" character in this, he just needed the earring.
I just purchased and received these leather pants from Planet Hollywood.
Just sublime. 🤣
I read it somewhere someone had to make the sound with leather standing beside John 😂😂😂😂
Why don't they make these american sitcoms anymore??? I remember watching these shows as a teenager sometimes crying laughing, we just don't get these shows anymore
A/V Sync at it's finest. If that was, simply, the pants I think it would have been a lot quieter. Awesome Scene, though.
I remember 🤣🤣🤣What season????
