  • What foods are good for freediving? What should you be eating to benefit you as a diver? I will let you know what I eat while I am training for competitions and what foods I try to stay away from. Not all foods are good for diving, some can have a negative impact on your training while some can actually increase your performance.
    Supplements for freediving is also covered in this video. I talk about the supplements that I personally take, when I take them and in what quantities. I'm definitely not an expert when it comes to diet. This is simply how I structure my own diet. And if you disagree with my logic or have some of your own ideas please let me know in the comments!

    I believe you are a high performing free diving Adam, you bring a lot of people into the sport of free diving with your information and content. You be the best you can, it doesn’t matter to be the best because once you are on top, the competition spirit just isn’t there anymore. The big thing that keeps you performing the best, is keeping this sport alive and bringing a love for the ocean. Sadly I do not have time to practice free diving or spear fishing, nor do I live by an ocean out here in Arizona. I do practice breathing exercises from your videos from time to time though. But because of you, for the past year you have sparked my interest in trying to get back into it. I only got into free diving a bit when I was in Hawaii for a bit, and then I came back to the desert. Eventually I would love to meet you and free dive together, you are an inspiration for many people.

    I also had my appendix taken out, then bled 2liters internally and needed a second open surgery and a week later developed and infection so i needed to go back to hospital. A week after that my doctor told me to comeback and then told me i had a 2cm neuroendocrine tumor (cancer) in my appendix and now i have had my hopefully last surgery to remove the last bits og cancer.
    So first i did 7weeks without diving and now i need to wait another 2weeks to go back out :(

    This information is so valuable, and your enthusiasm is contagious! I'm going to go make some oatmeal Right This Minute!
    I am *not* a freediver, but I want to have something closer to the kind of nimble fitness I enjoyed as a younger woman. I won't be able to "power eat" like you lovely young people, because I won't be using nearly that level of calories, but the anti-inflammatory and low mucous level of this kind of diet will be very, very helpful in managing my health and well-being.
    (I'm almost 60 and have health issues that preclude any kind of diving, but I was a *huge* recreational swimmer my entire youth, *decades* before the mermaid craze.)

    Thanks for this vid.( Suggestions for your below.)Ive been snorkeling to 8m over the last couple of months and had been tracking diet and performance. It was nice to see you confirm things Ive gone eggs (boiled and omelette) and fish/seafood diet mostly, with 1 day per week for beef, and maybe chicken once every 2 weeks. . Ive also started eating A LOT OF vegetable soups. look up green mango soup its a very neat thing that is just crazy amount of vitamins (soup has mango and pineapple and tomatoes!)
    Some suggestions-
    Try buckwheat. Speficially russian style toasted buckwheat. Simply add 1 cup to 2 cups cold water on the stove and simmer until water goes away (10 mins or so) - find a recipe. Here is why I think you should try it - 1. It is much better than oats in terms of protein amounts and vitamins. 2. you can easily add milk to it and honey to make it into a sweet dish, OR you can easily use buckwheat as a side dish to meat or fish or whatever by adding some salt to it. Ive eaten oatmeal for breakfast many times and it just gets boring quick. Ive added it to protein shakes but then side effect is it starts turning in your stomach making you feel bloaty.
    2. supplement with zinc. Zinc and lysine are amazing, former for immune health and testosterones, latter for the skin repair and not getting cold sores from too much sun/stress on the immune system.
    3. check with people you know, but ive heard MENS body can not process iron - so men shouldnt take it period because it has to come out via blood (menstruation for women). I am curious if what you said about vit c changed this since.
    4. eggs - boil a whole pack of eggs. now you have easy meal anytime you want to eat something AND you dont eat a bowl of something unhealthy. Having boiled eggs around is very convenient. Especially before bed.

    Hi Adam, are you aware of any free divers who have adopted a ketogenic diet? Starting at the beginning of 2019, I was a bit over weight, so I went to the "keto diet", and now get most of my "fuel" from ketones rather than glucose. Once I hit my weight goal, I decided to stay with the diet, because it makes me feel so much better. Additionally, I avoid grain-sourced carbs and all refined sugars. I tend to consume the lower glycemic-index fruits and veggies and stick to OMAD, One Meal A Day. Obviously, if I am taxing my system with this type training, I will need to increase my caloric intake on days I am training. As I begin this journey into free diving, I will be keeping a detailed log of diet and how I feel Day2day. Thanks for all the inspiring and informative videos, I really enjoy your style of delivery & adventures! Maybe we'll get to dive together some day, Cheers!

      ACtually animal fat is the best source of energy, as it is not instantly burned, and the energy is released over time, comparing to carbs that are basically the fruit and burn like Christmas Tree (fast). So bacon is good, some side carbs as well, but animal fat as a junk food (with tons of salt and processed sugar) is a big no no.

A naturopath told me that years ago, pointing out the diets of the animal kingdom. And that you point out biodiversity is so spot on! You say you aren’t a nutrition expert but you have explained the purpose of what you eat and why you eat it is totally clear and again bam 💥 spot on.

    Tips for iron and oats.
    Oats are naturally rich in iron, but the iron is bound and not easy for the body to access. But if you soak the oats overnight in the fridge (in orange, apple juice or water ect....) enzymes get activated, resulting in easier access to the nutrients of the oats, giving you more of the iron that's in there.

    Perfect. Oats made with milk made me feel heavy and bloated. I have tried it exactly once. It could be the milk or me eating it too early before diving. So I am avoiding it now. In a big swell I got sick. Thumbs up for chocolate. One with hazelnuts is the best. My plan is to take some fruit or/and chocolate when spearing but need to come up with a good way of keeping it dry. A boat would help. I think I need a new job.

      Exactly, that is why it is b-shit the video. Milk is one of the worst things you can eat. You lose ability to digest cow's milk as you stop being a baby. Milk just rots in your intestines, making you bloated, heavy and feeling bad, also giving cramps. You cannot digest lactose, and in the form of milk it's really bad for you. Unless someone never stopped drinking milk throughout the life (and still has lactase produced in body). So yeah, take advice from amateurs and hippies ;). Milk is bad to us and has low nutritional value.

    Adam, just wondering what your take is on ketosis in freediving, and supplementing with exogenous ketones?
    I've heard good things and felt a difference in my dives, but it seems like, in essence, you try to carb-load before a dive. Which is antagonistic to a ketogenic diet.... Just curious. Thanks for the content you put out! Keep killin it!

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  Před 6 lety +1

      super interesting that you bring that up! I'm actually looking into that myself. In general the keto diet isn't thought to be good for freediving and any freediver that has tried it at a competitive level has only had bad results but I'm extremely interested in maintaining my normal diet but simply having exogenous ketones before my dives and seeing the result

      Ben Greenfield (iron man triathlete) said he did this before a race one time, he was hyper-ketotic and hyper-glycemic, he said he felt like he was on jet fuel physically, and got the mental clarity benefits of the ketotic state. I'd be really interested to hear the experience of someone who dives as deep as you do.

    Great video. Thanks. What about using the oat as "milk" in order to add other grains or cereal?. For example... I process 1/2 glass of oat with 1 glass of water (and honey) making a... milk (if the name suit) Then, i put that milk in a bowl and add nuts, bran, raisins... etc. The only problem is that i feel heavy after breakfast, and i have to take it at least 2 hours before dive.
    You say that the spearfishers expend a lot of time in the water. Im not a fisher, but i dive a lot with fishers... so i expend a lot of time too in water (3 hours is common)... what can i carry on my orange buoy - in addition to fresh water - in order to replenish or refuel my body without cramps?
    Sorry for my tarzan-mode english. Greets from argentina.

      Che baludo! haha I dive with a lot of Argentinians. Yes your 'milk' idea is fantastic! definitely keep that up and the best thing to have on the bouy with you would be Amino Acids or a fruit juice :)

    Adam thanks for the videos, they're great. I'm a college student and writing a paper about PEDs in competition. Have you ever heard of anyone using EPO (blood doping), beta blockers (lower heart rate), or any other PEDs in freediving? Thanks

    • @AdamFreediver
      @AdamFreediver  Před 6 lety

      EPO, no but I know that people have used Beta Blockers before. Also steroids in their pre-season

    • @thesailingsiren
      @thesailingsiren Před 5 lety +1

      Whoah, I'm a pharmacist and the idea of using beta blockers is an intriguing one. You'd think that the risk isn't worth the benefit! Depending on which one you take, you run the risk of interfering with the mammalian dive reflex. I know that your post is a year old, but I just wanted to comment as I thought you brought up an interesting point. This article on PubMed might be of interest depending on your medical background and health literacy. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17686376

      Hey Martin :) the reality of the situation is much more complex that stated in the video but all freedivers I know of that have tried keto diets have performed badly on it. This piece of knowledge I actually got from working with a highly regarded exercise physiologist and i'm not sure of the specific source

    Hey Adam. I'm curious about what you said about fat and oxygen binding. I'm a 5th year medical student, and I've never heard about fat taking oxygen's place in a red blood cell. I am not sure I believe you, and would love to hear where you got this info from. Do you have any sources backing what you say? Or is it more like a word of mouth among freedivers kind of thing? Genuinely curious.

    I take oats with vegemite, or anything used to flavour savoury soups/broths. I used to think I couldn't eat in the morning, until I realised my morning meals didn't have to be sweet.

    lentils lentil lentils with sweet potatoes or butternut squash and veggies. power food. Agree, pea powder protein is so much easier for your body to handle. There are many great types, tried this one recently, "nu3 Bio Vegan Protein Shake", wild. And mix with raw berries, coconut milk or almond milk. Spinach green drink with raw apple juice or coconut water as a base. beets and carrots yum.

    I actually have a question about caloric output during freediving, especially during a static session. I always feel exhausted after a long-ish table (40min+), but I know I'm not moving much (other than contractions). Has anybody done any work around how many calories you would burn in a static session?

    Also are nuts alright to eat or do they have too much fat in them because I found them useful for snacking on but I know that fats get broken down into fatty acids and freedivers like their alkaline stuff :/
