Drain Pros Ep. 5 - Grease Trap at Grocery Store Deli

  • In this video we are pumping out a grease trap under a stainless steel three bay sink in a deli of a grocery store. After using our portable pumping unit to vaccum out the thick grease from the grease interceptor we use a general drain machine to cable through the inlet and outlet of trap to break up all grease build up that has gotten down into the pipe. After the cleaning has been completed we refill the grease trap to the usual height of the outlet and reinstall the lid.

I work on drainage systems on warships. The piss, poop and shower drains (hair) doesn't really bother me but when the GDU backs up from the galley it has me retching. Fetid food and other waste just stinks to high heaven and just doesn't seem to go away from the compartment until a few days or your overalls until the 3rd maybe 4th wash.

correct me but, the reason for this is 2 things, grease is very like rich, earthy and rotten aswell as (in some cases: catches all the above: pee poo and whatnot like u mentioned) so it just kinda gets all the rancid rotten fat and gunk?

That Grease interceptor could function much better if it was actually installed as per the manufactures instructions. Proper venting and a trap upstream would make a huge difference.

something I learned mowing lawns when I was young, you paint the underside of the mower to help stop the grass from sticking and caking up. I'm sure the same applies to a grease trap. it did fall off the sides pretty easily in your video

These are usually done on a quarterly basis…. There is absolutely no need to go to the length of getting every bit that out.. especially if you are the guy doing the maintenance… the job is usually understood that you are there to suck the trap and and clean the pipe .. most guys do what they did and nothing more… because it’s note necessary…

Hi thanks for the video. I'm have a problem with grease. We get our trap cleaned regularly. I've noticed the levels in the compartments are very different. The outgoing side is very low like below the out pipe. Is this a problem. Any thoughts or suggestions greatly appreciated thanks

    • @DrainPros
      @DrainPros  Před 3 lety +1

Thanks Tim! The outlet level of your trap should be just about even with the bottom of the pipe.. the water should flow slowly through the outlet as you run water from the sink.. if your at that level then your golden! If it’s lower than that usually it means there’s a clog at the bottom of the outlet baffle not allowing the water volume drain through but rather fill up the level of the main chamber! 👍 let me know how you make out, wish you the best of luck!

Not at all Richie! We already have it on a maintenance agreement so if it backed up between them we would take care of that for them free of charge 👍. The side wall grease and the grease in the pipe is typical hard and crusty and clogs the vaccum up, the next time we suck it in a few months the chunks will liquify with the warm water back into pump-able grease! Thanks for asking!

An experienced mechanic person recently showed me that if a stuck horizontal oriented 55 year old brass screw fastener such as a drain cover over a 45 degree angle Y-shaped inlet on 1-1/4 to 2 inch pipe needed to be loosened and removed, that lifting upward on the 18 inch long socket wrench drive handle is way better than pushing downward on the same wrench handle because more and greater force could be applied in a more controlled manner (that is if the given operator person was capable of lifting very strongly on this tool handle).
This is because weight lifting can be even greater than misapplied body weight downward upon a slippery situation where the socket could slip off of the hexagonal shaped nut, thereby causing stripping on the fastening hexagonal fastening head attempting to be removed.
The alternative for physically limited space situations is to rent or buy a compressed air socket impact drive that applies very strong rapid controlled impacted torque to loosen such fasteners--this along with the needed space required to lay the compressed air hose or wheel in this heavier air compressor equipment in close proximity that requires some man handling effort anyway.
A larger compressor might be 5 horsepower, have a 6 foot high compressed air tank, and a loud air-cooled three cylinder compression drive sitting atop of it that uses a 3 phase 240 volt electrical motor requiring such an electrical outlet that are not that common place. I am from Canada, by the way...

yes and no,, what is making you sick , is this is what the American Public has in their arteries, this is now a global problem , heart disease , cheap fillers, lard, and cheap grade oils that is making the world sick.
As the world keeps eating out , more and more, we keep seeing the pregnant man look, which is non alcoholic fatty liver disease . 1 in 5 have it , 6 out of 10 in America is obese.
if you over eat, then bombard your system with other garbage, you body will never work as designed , So when you are backed up , and your poo poo stinks think of this video , as this is what we have inside of us.
All located in much narrower drain pipes , such as intestines , arteries ,, and colon , and there is no vacuum to clean us our.
The new silent epidemic,,, fatty liver disease is compounded by cortisol inefficiency, created by the over use of Coffee, and Sugar , coffee makes your liver , what is known as insulin resistant, Coffee with stress your liver for 6 to 8 hours, , please read up on this , and research this, most of your pregnant man look persons , are avid coffee drinkers , cake eaters, and or soda pop drinkers, and snackers , which then leads to over eating , because of these stresses on the liver and insulin spikes , and resistance, we never feel full, and then we have a tendency to over eat, and eat more often as we never feel full, which leads to our liver to malfunction and start to become fatty , .
We are being poisoned little by little, its ok if it does not kill you within two months , however , if it takes years to slowly kill you , its ok . Hope this helps

Now I have a serious question people?
Are grease traps the worst smell out there or is there something else worse??

I used to work at a restaurant where the grease trap would get backed up every few weeks. In turn we would have to open it up like this and clean it by hand with a spyder or strainer. Owners refused to pay for a service like this. I can handle some gross stuff when it comes to cleaning, but the smell these things produce can be downright awful. Fermented rotting food mixed with hot water. People would not enter the back at all when it was being cleaned

@@diamondssd1 Everyone who uses the sinks should get a little training. If they dont put food grease and oil down the sinks then you will not have to clean the trap. Simple and common sense.
