  • Richard Smith started playing the guitar at age 5 and has never looked back. Focusing early on with the fingerstyle guitar of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, he began transcribing classical music, Jazz, the gypsy style of Django Reinhardt, bluegrass, ragtime and the blues to Sousa marches. Now a seasoned performer in his forties with thousands of performances worldwide to his credit, Richard has become renowned for his mastery of instrument and for his knock-out entertaining shows.

I can not believe the views for this is not in the millions. I am 85 and have listened to guitar players since the 40's and have never heard anyone as good as Richard. He is absolutely astounding.

Charles, go to Chet Atkins Appreciation Society gathering in Nashville, every second week in July at the Nashville Sheraton. Disneyland for guitar nerds.
You'll get one of the best treats and hear him play with Tommy Emmanuel.

@@johngarrity6687 Yes I would put him right up there with Richard. But when it comes to the song "Entertainer" by Scott Joplin I have never heard anyone play it on guitar like Richard. Every note clear and right on. As much as I love Tommy I do not think he could play this tune as well, but both are the kings today.

The man has talent, no doubt, but he also has a rare work ethic. He talks honestly about what it takes to play the way he does. It takes time, patience, discipline, and a practice routine that eschews mere noodling. One thing he said really stuck with me. He said everytime you pick up the guitar, you have to have a specific objective in mind: What little phrase of a piece do you want to have mastered before you put the guitar back down. It may be no more than two measures.

The audience's response to Richard's breathtaking performance is muted, unenthusiastic and almost as if they were applauding some wanna-be amateur! Instead of which they were witnessing one of the greatest living exponents of ALL modern and traditional styles of guitar playing.
What I like about Richard's playing is not only his phenomenal technique and incredible musicality (no matter what genre takes his fancy) but his personality is so unassuming, so modest; it's almost as if he were completely unaware of his mastery - his complete command of his instrument.

    • @SchwartzDaddy

Robert, Just wondered if you're a pro Musician/entertainer. I've been in the business all my life and I know an enthusiastic applause as opposed to an indifferent one. Whether you can hear 20 or 2000 on this recording, makes no difference. Listen carefully to the rate at which individuals clap here and the complete lack of spontaneity at the end of each song. It's almost as if they're applauding out of politeness. Having read all the comments on here relating to the indifference shown by the audience, yours is the first I've read trying to excuse them!

Chet Atkins was an inspiration to many fine guitar pickers, who went on to become their own. Richard Smith , an excellent example.

His knowledge of harmony is stunning. And he knows where it fits on the guitar. I just wish his guitar had a different sound. Maybe it is better live. But there is no doubt, Richard Smith is a great guitarist. One of the finest.

You cant hear the crowd reacting on this version, there was another version of wind and warm since deleted/blocked.

Adrian so why was it blocked, I wonder? The audience's response to Richard's breathtaking performance is muted, unenthusiastic and almost as if they were applauding some wanna-be amateur! Instead of which they were witnessing one of the greatest living exponents of ALL modern and traditional styles of guitar playing.
What I like about Richard's playing is not only his phenomenal technique and incredible musicality (no matter what genre takes his fancy) but his personality is so unassuming, so modest; it's almost as if he were completely unaware of his mastery - his complete command of his instrument.
