This is quite possibly the worst representation of big game anatomy I have ever seen. The fact that this was put out by a game commission is horrifying. The shoulder is no where near that solid red line and anyone who has butchered one single animal knows this. The radius and ulna bones of the front leg will connect to the humerous where the top of the leg meets the bottom of the chest cavity. The humerous goes diagonally forward and then connects to the flat shoulder blade making the vital V. The perfect broads hide shot is straight up the front leg, lower 1/3rd of the animal. Adjust accordingly for quartering shots.
Horrible representation of where the vitals are. Slide it forward about 4-6". Come on Pennsylvania set your hunters out for success not liver and gut shot failures.
This is all wrong. There is no dead zone between the lungs and the spine. The spinus processes extend several inches off the dorsal side of the vertebrae. The Spine proper, is actually 3-4 inches below the top of an elk's backline at the shoulder. Also the shot placement presented here is wrong. That red circle needs to be closer to the shoulder by about 4 inches. An elk's leg bone makes a sharp 40° bend sideways as soon as it meets the lower bodyline, leaving the heart and lungs exposed directly above the femur. A perfect broadside shot is directly in line with the front leg, about ⅖ to ⅓ the width of the elk's trunk up from the bottom of the belly.
The vitals in this video are way too far back. This video is a recipe for liver shots. Ask any Western Hunter and they'll tell you straight up the leg broadside. Do better PGC.
Andrew Prosser I agree. I expect better from state FG agencies. They need to actually look at the anatomy of an Elk. the shoulder blade doesn’t come that high to obstruct the anterior heart/lung.
Well another example of why PA game comm. sucks!!! They cant even give good shot placement advice!! But why would we expect anything different from a state that does not have elk hunting. Ad another commenter posted, move the viral area forward 4-6”!! Especially at that angle
