    This rules! For non kiwi listeners, the story of Hatupatu escaping from the bird witch Kurangaituku, is one of the most famous Māori legends. As she chased him, he cried out to a rock which opened up a hole for him to hide, then he tricked the witch into falling into a pit of volcanic boiling mud. Hatupatu's rock, is a real place near my home in the North Island. There's a highway next to it now, many people stop there and place coins or food for good luck

    • @toamaori
      @toamaori Před 2 lety +20

      hmmm the word taiaha is also used as a metaphor for the fighting staff that hangs down between your legs... so the reply to that question might be, " Oh your good my bro, you hold your own taiaha" xD But if you were handing them the taiaha at the same time the meaning would not be a double one. Taiaha were personal weapons made to the specific proportions of the owner, given a name and imbued with a mauri, life force, :)

    • @NiCadHeliPilot
      @NiCadHeliPilot Před 2 lety +4

      @@toamaori Correct me if I'm wrong here. But, if I remember rightly, if a taiaha were placed on the ground & their enemy picked it up... wasn't that, like their equivalent of a declaration of war?

    • @toamaori
      @toamaori Před 2 lety +17

      @@NiCadHeliPilot I haven't heard that before, different tribes have different traditions and someone expert in those weaponry traditions would be able to answer that. But from what I know you wouldn't just place it randomly on the ground like a common object as they were held in high regard, they would have taken a considerable amount of time to construct to an extremely high level of craftsmanship and be treasured possessions treated as such.
      What you mention is similar though to the wero, part of the ritual process of two tribes meeting...when if a group of people, another tribe or ope taua (war party) visited, an accomplished warrior would run out alone or with a few others to meet them maybe a kilometre or two away from the village, display his prowess of weaponry and lay a token on the ground, sometimes a stick, sometimes a dart... if the dart pointed directly at the arriving group it was a warning to them to stay away and they are not welcome.. danger if you proceed.
      laid perpendicular meant they home people were indifferent, unsure of the visitors, if the dart pointed forwards the home village, it meant proceed, you are welcome but you are being watched. If the visitors picked up the token, they were taking the message and approaching in peace and respect.. if they stood on or walked over it... they were there for conflict, to attack.
      All this while the challenging toa/warrior is assessing the people who are advancing and who the leader and most proficient warriors are. if their intent was malicious, he would immediately move to take out the leader and best warriors before they advanced further.
      in the old days this would be performed multiple times as they got closer and closer by different warriors, to show the strength and ability of the home people.
      again different tribes have different traditions and methods but this is a general description of wero / challenge.
      However when performed today the wero is symbolic and performed at the gate way to the marae, but the kaiwero (challenger) could meet out deadly force if protocol is not adhered to. However, a warning strike without making contact is what would normally happen, I've seen people break protocol and get a warning strick millimetres away from their head that's literally close enough to shave with. A properly expertly placed taiaha strike could easily spill brains on the ground.

My GPS took us through a gorge and my mum happened to see a clearing on the side of the highway with Hatu Patu on a sign in the middle of this gorge. Kind of creepy knowing the back story now. Not really a desirable place to drive at night as the roads really windy and it’s all Native forest. Kind of pretty land and very scenic.

    My parents moving us here to NZ when I was a toddler was the best decision ever. I'm so proud to be here and as a metal fan I've always sat in preformences at school wondering what it would sound like if it were metal. My girlfriend found this and showed it to me and istg it's exactly what I wanted to hear since I started listening to metal

    I find wonderful that bands/musicians share their culture to the world through their songs. I'm of Ukrainian descent, and since Russia tried to erase our culture (it's been 3 centuries it tries), no one knows us -- even in Western Europe lol. That's why music is so important to keep culture alive ! Go_A did it, IGNEA also did... It's pretty badass. Alien Weaponry is amazing. I wish you the best, and I also wish you could tour more often in Europe !
