  • A scene from Band Of Brothers (Crossroads). Capt. Winters is on leave in France but is haunted by flashbacks of what he saw in the war so far.

Great representation of PTSD flashbacks in my opinion. Starts off when the darkness kicks in and he can't recognize the faces. In that episode, Winters was writing a report about their assault on a German SS company at Crossroads. The German boy was the first he killed, and the one he got a direct look at before shooting him. Especially the minds of veterans will tend to wander off to remember the horrors, in almost disbelief of what he sees in civilian life. Currahee

I’m an Iraq war vet, and i know exactly how his character felt in that moment. I was home for about 6 months and while driving one day I had a flashback to a roadside bomb just looking at the curb out my window. Next thing I knew I heard hoking and yelling and realized I drove straight through a red light intersection, barely missing crossing traffic. Totally zonked out, lights on but nobody home. Flashbacks can be so real it’s like you entered a worm hole straight to the past.

I think it's really sweet how the French boy is portrayed. He meets Winters outside the train station, saluting him and then admiring the medals and pins on his jacket. You can totally see it in his face that he was completely honored to be in the presence of an American soldier. He even examines his posture, imitating it as he looks away. Definitely one of my favorite scenes, thank you for the upload!

Sometimes the aftermath is much worse than the event itself. At that that point he felt a detachment from everyone around him, the carriage lending itself to be almost over sensory, which triggered the anxieties for which he wasn't fully prepared to face.
I think that soldier was the closest he ever came to the enemy, the innocence of that German boy looking back at him, smiling for moment....and then it was all over.

This scene moved me more than any other scene in the entire series. I can't imagine the immense guilt and regret some soldiers felt at having to end the lives of young men who weren't even old enough to buy beer or gamble in the USA. Winters knows he was just doing his duty and that if he hadn't ended that young German soldier's life it could have potentially caused the dearh of a lot of US soldiers but that doesn't mean those terrible feelings that come with ending a life won't haunt him the rest of his life. I have a particular interest in how memories affect us as people. Though war ptsd is nothing compared to say, breakups. Its interesting how similarly our memories can weigh on us. Simple everyday things that objectively mean nothing can remind us of very specific painful times. Memories can replay in our heads endlessly, changing something that happened in seconds into an over-analysis that feels like hours in the head. Both radically changing our perspectives and personality.
