I owned one of these in 1986. Bought it brand new, and picked it up from the factory in Munich. 170'ish bhp, as I recall, which was a lot back then, particularly in a smallish saloon. Loved the engine, sixes do it for me. However, BMW's and Mercs have always been marketed in UK as something special, whereas in Germany, the taxis are Mercs, and BMW's are just BMW's. A couple of weeks after I'd bought the car, and returned to Hampshire, I went out to go to work, drove off.... , the car felt really weird, downright dangerous in fact. Took it to the dealer, who pronounced that the special gas shocks at the rear had collapsed. In the end , I realised that the engine was all I really liked about the car, and moved it on after about a year.

I've never had any other car , let alone a car that is only a few weeks old, have something major like the rear suspension collapse. I didn't say the E30 was a bad car. I basically said, underneath it all, it's an average car. When I took mine in to a BMW main dealer, here in the UK, for its first service, they loaned me an E30 316, for the day. It was nearly new, not ragged out..., but really, at the time, I'd had more enjoyable drives out of Cavaliers, Triumph Dolomites, Escorts... My more or less next car after the 325i was a 3 year old Citroen BX19 GT. 18 months of ownership, not a single problem.
The best sound I can hear of any car, all my life I'm in love with E30 M20 combination...I trully love it, a true romance we have :) And, so sorry I do not own one :( Would be soooooo happy even with an 320, not matter how beat up she would be. I would not be a surprise, though, that I will beat her I also :)

Engine where the Power increase between 3000 and 5000 are crazy 44% (normal rates are ~35%) and the Power los between Peak (5800rpm) and stock Limiter (6500) are just small 4% ! (normal are rates between 10-20% !) No other Natural Aspirated Street Car Engine before or after, reached this good rates, even the BMW M52B25 that is 2 generations newer.
The price here in germany are high for the M20 Engine, and go up, because it's a good engine, not like your mx5 baby engine. Now get the hell out of here, go somewhere else trolling. Idiot ! Under 4000 rpm nobody believed in 2500cc. Felt like a small 16 V, with better Sound. 8,8:1 instead of 9,7:1 was castrating him, 320i much more… And 320i M20 needs a little more fuel than 325 i , although much slower and 500 cc less. So weak, not enough torque, 320 i has very, very short gears, much rpm at small km/h!!! 320i shit- 325i ok!!!

For "performance": Bilstein b8 + h&r springs / Modified e-prom / 325is Gearbox / S3,91 / E36 Power steering.. 180hp on Dyno this year, 140.000km stock!
@@blastkillskank 325is came with another manual gearbox than the original 325i. The 3 first gear are shorter on the 325is :)
