My dad told me when I read the phrase "weaker vessel" I should think of fine china. How do you treat fine china? With tenderness and care. You don't toss it around or put it in a dishwasher, you handle it with care, you hand wash it. It's a precious thing.

Before I was born again I hated the view of “religion” on women and I embraced feminism and I even startes disliking being “feminine”. Now that I am born again I finally understand that there is nothing wrong with being “weaker” or “submissive” when it’s done in God’s way. oh the POWER and PEACE in accepting the role God gave me! 🙌🙌🔥🔥🙏🙏 There is nothing discouraging in that, I am more secure and stronger than ever, I know who I am in Him and that’s all I need. And I have embraced being feminine too, I would never want to look like a guy (no disrespect to my brothers, but as a girl I rather look like a girl indeed). God bless! 😘

Yes, so many people in Western countries think that being physically weaker somehow means being inferior as a human being in some way. But that is completely mistaken. It's not inferior to be weaker, just different. And women tend to be better at some things than men anyway.
The natural, God-designed differences between men and women should be celebrated. But instead of doing this, mainstream Western culture gets out its hammer and chisel and tries to get rid of these differences.

Excellent and unapologetically biblical. I get so tired of pastors giving huge disclaimers and dancing around an obvious answer for 20 minutes before finally sugar coating what God says in order to make something more palatable at the expense of Truth. Pastor Piper definitely did NOT do that here and I’m very thankful for that. This was just as important for men to hear as it is for women. Thank you.

I'm glad John Piper stressed the word "honor". Sadly, too much time was spent on trying to understand what "weaker vessel" means, which took a lot of emphasis off of the central message of the verse. I know that he was answering the question, but still, it emphasizes "weakness" over "honor". As a woman, I've found it very helpful to remember that the exhortation is directed at husbands, not wives. I'm not being told that I'm weaker, my husband is being told to honor me as he would a weaker (some interpret this as fragile and valuable) vessel or part. You take special care of a fragile and valuable possession.
I'm more than happy with my husband (and men in general) being stronger than me, but I'm not happy at all if they use that strength against me or to put me down. I don't need to be like a man, but I do want to be respected and honored and not seen as an inferior being.
I might be going out on a limb here, but in 1 Corinthians 12:20-26, where the Church is described as the body, made up of many parts, there is also talk about "weaker parts" and how the weaker or less honorable parts are given greater honor in the Body of Christ. Bottom line, I think, is that in Christ, any greater strength (of any kind) is given to us for the benefit of others and never to use against others.

My clear understanding of this page with strong conviction is as below.
    1. We are slaves of traditional teaching that males are superior etc.
    2. God has sent males and females with important expected responsibilities with roles ( as if in a drama stage) different but well defined and complementary. (Vessel = role). Women are expected by God to justify their assigned role as supportive )weaker) part and not a dominant part or role or character in the brief earthly stay of testing of our performances. Cf. This didn’t really answer much. It’s more of the same stuff weak chauvinistic men in churches (pastors included) use to manipulate women. I think in 2021 we need a deeper and clearer dive into this subject. I can’t see how this is encouraging to women...especially to the women who are physically/emotionally/spiritually stronger than most men these days.

    • @maxaplin4204
      @maxaplin4204 Před 3 lety +7

There was nothing chauvinistic in John Piper's message in this video. God has made men and women different in some respects, and we should celebrate the God-given and natural differences. We shouldn't try to overcome them like so many in godless Western culture do.
Men tend to be better at some things than women, and women tend to be better at some things than men.
You talk about women being physically stronger than men. But the average physical strength of men is obviously much greater than the average physical strength of women. It's politically correct nonsense to try to deny this.
I think this can actually be encouraging for women if it helps them to see that in some circumstances less is expected of them than men. That might help to reduce some pressure they might feel.

I'm glad I watched this, I wasn't sure how to take that statement. I saw this said in another comment but I'll rephrase it: To God, weaker is not synonymous with worse/inferior (unlike with our human societies think, which is why women being weaker is a problem). I guess how I'm thinking about it now after this is that we're honestly both weak, for several reasons. A woman can't provide for herself because she's "weaker", but also because she's human. A man can't provide for himself because he's human AND is charged to provide for more than himself. Both of them have a situation where they need God's help just from being human, and doubly so because within the context of being human they have to do certain things (which they'll mess up at without God).

Many defend the Bible’s view on women and say that they have different roles but are of equal value.
If that’s true, then tell me why fathers are allowed to sell their daughters into slavery in the Old Testament, but it makes no mention of selling their sons:
    Exodus 21:7
“When [not if] a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male slaves do.
Is that because women are treated as property of men to be bought and sold? And men are treated as owners, not property?

[17] You may not eat within your towns the tithe of your grain or of your wine or of your oil, or the firstborn of your herd or of your flock, or any of your vow offerings that you vow, or your freewill offerings or the contribution that you present, [18] but you shall eat them before the LORD your God in the place that the LORD your God will choose, you and your son and your daughter, your male servant and your female servant, and the Levite who is within your towns. And you shall rejoice before the LORD your God in all that you undertake.
Not sure what you’re referencing in this passage. Of course men could be slaves, but it never mentions someone else selling a man into slavery. They can sell themselves into slavery, but only women can be sold by someone else (I.e. their father)

@@Iamwrongbut I did make a mistake with the reference. Apologies for that.
I just meant v. 18, which shows that men could be slaves.
The last 2 sentences of your first comment seemed to suggest that you thought that only women were slaves in ancient Israel.
But I see now that your focus was on people selling their daughters and not sons rather than on women and not men being slaves.
I will admit that I don't know enough of this subject matter to comment on the specifics.
One answer that I often see given to the sort of objection you raise is that God permitted some bad things in the Law of Moses because of people's hardness of heart, knowing that if he gave stricter rules, they would just be disobeyed, and that Israel had much kinder laws in general than all the other nations round about.
I think there may well be something to that line of thinking, but I don't want to pretend I have a good answer.

@Desire Of All Nations if you think this is a passage of judgment you do not know the context. God is literally describing how women are to be treated “when” their father’s sell them into slavery. This comes after the description in Exodus 21 of how Hebrew men can sell themselves into slavery and then are released after 6 years of service.
What the passage I am referring to is about is women being sold by their father as marriage slaves to other men. Women have no say in the matter according to the law. So, if a man has a daughter and he incurs debts, he can sell his property (in this case his daughter) to payoff that debt. There is no passage in the OT that allows a man to sell his son if he’s in debt. That’s where the inequality stems from, besides the moral repugnance of debt slavery.
If God didn’t want this to happen, then He could have written “Fathers shall not sell their daughters into slavery.” Instead, He gave clear instructions on how to do it according to his law.
I’m excited to hear you say that slavery is morally okay in this context. If you are planning to say that, then please answer me this question: would you sell your own daughter as a slave if you were in debt and lived 2500 years ago?

Michael the archangel was not there at creation, looking at how the enemy, the serpent raised doubt about "Indeed, hath God said...?" let's us know that evil intentions are often behind any attempt to interpret the Bible differently. Secondly, you have undoubtedly found that you have had to stop conversations with someone who was certainly teying to get to know you, and say, "Wait; _What I meant was_ ....." Right? Anyone who was trying to get to know you would have to simply do the work to figure out what words mean when they come out of your particular mouth, which is expressing your particular mind, which is driven by your particular spirit. Those words will express background, intent, context, worldview, etc. We now (as I am sure you already know) must do all of THAT with _studying_ the Bible, to truly _hear_ God, to truly _know_ Him. I would say that the fall of man, and the wickedness of the enemy has caused the hornet's nest of "interpretation" that we now see. Hope that helps.

I think the emphasis & importance of the "weaker vessel" part of this verse is to paint out that physical abuse from a husband against a woman, or a man against woman, is absolutely not okay at all. Like you have to respect and honor women in that sense, and protect them too. It's not that women are incapable of protecting themselves or that sometimes they aren't stronger than men... sometimes a woman can be physically stronger than a man... but the point is that we don't abuse bodily strength to abuse one another. And also that we don't just ignore evil happening among us but we protect the weak as necessary.
This is merely what I observed at a time when I was wrestling with this verse.
Also I'm not sure what John was trying to say about the brain thing, women tend to have a larger ratio of grey matter than men - so men literally aren't smarter than us and we're just made differently. Men and women are equal before God but different in role, so I feel like it could have been presented better. But not trying to come sideways at John or anything...

Men and women have different roles in the home and in the church, but different roles do not indicate differing worth. People who take umbrage with Peter’s mention of a woman’s physical weakness completely miss the rest of 1 Peter 3:7, which clearly says that the husband and wife are spiritually equal. They are “heirs” of the “gift of life” together. A wife should be treated with “respect,” and a husband who fails to honor his wife will find that his prayers are “hindered.” For instance men and women have different, God-given roles, and those roles should be celebrated and assumed with thanksgiving, child birth would be a great example. Ultimately Men will answer to God for how they lead their families and the church. Just because men have spiritual authority over women in the church doesn’t mean men are superior or that they have a special standing with God.
Clearly God has chosen distinct roles for both men and women that they may complement each other in a way that most glorifies Himself.

I think one of the worst examples of trying to pretend that women are as physically strong as men is on the issue of front line soldiers. It is absurd to have women doing this job.
I saw a news clip a few years ago about this, which highlighted the point. It talked about a military rule for front line troops that a single soldier should be strong enough to carry away a wounded soldier from the battle front.
But they wanted to allow women to be front line soldiers too, but a woman was typically not strong enough to carry away a big man on her own. So they changed the rule to say that no more than 2 women should be strong enough to carry away a wounded soldier.
But this rule change is obviously going to mean that sometimes the fighting ability of front line units would be decreased, because an extra person would sometimes be needed to carry away a wounded man.
We see here how foolish political correctness has been allowed to trump the ability of the military to fight.

Hey! I understand how these subjects can be hard to digest especially depending on upbringing and our personal experiences. I would encourage you to begin at Genesis. In the garden is where we see God’s design for men, women, and marriage. Satan was well informed on this design. Satan cannot create anything on his own, he can only pervert or twist God’s perfect designs. So that is exactly what he did after being kicked out of Heaven. He came as a serpent to Eve and Adam. (Ezekiel 28:13-19, Genesis 3) Now Adam was the one God gave instruction to not eat of the tree. Eve wasn’t even created yet. (Genesis 2:15-17) It was Adam’s responsibility as the head of the family to relay that information to Eve. In Genesis 3, God’s men and women design is cunningly attacked by Satan here. Though Adam and Eve were standing together at the tree (verse 6) Satan addresses only Eve knowing she isn’t the one who heard the instruction directly from God. This makes it easier for her to be deceived because how can she really know God said that if she wasn’t there? As the leader and one who witnessed the instruction himself, Adam should have stepped in to speak truth, but instead we see passivity in him. Adam did not protect his family here. Satan tries his hardest to blind us from what our souls were truly created to embrace. Because of that in history and even today, we see an epidemic of men not stepping up to be the leaders and caretakers they were created to be. We also see women feeling the need to prove themselves and take on responsibility that bogs them down and does not awaken their souls to the beauty of femininity.
I encourage you to read Captivating by John and Stasi Eldredge. It is a book that gave me great joy in embracing the gift of being a woman. I pray you and anyone else reading this has a great day and truly converse with God about how these topics are difficult for you and ask for His truth to fill you.

As an aside, anyone arguing that Eve's ass is not perfect doesn't understand that it was The Arch Angel Michael Himself who carved Eve out of a rib, and Michael sculpted her ass to be perfection. Genesis 3:16 Yet your desire will be for your husband, And he shall rule over you. #NoNewWorldOrder

The sexual organ explaination- No. Totally wrong. Piper, instead of conjecture why don't you read the Greek and get precise meaning. You never read the Greek. You always make English word studies loaded with a ton of conjecture.

Wow I'd have never thought of it being anything to do with comparative genetalila. I thought only recently about how "comical" it was for God to give a weaker women to help a man. "You need help Adam? Here, I made someone not as strong as you to help you.". God is funny.

God ultimately, but the implication of the fall is that by being deceived by satan, women are weaker in other ways. We live in a world where that’s not allowed to be a truth, doesn’t mean women are less valuable (Ephesians 1:6) or don’t know Gods grace (Galatians 3:28). More a basis for a man to treat his wife as Gods word asks of husbands. That’s why the teaching in 1 Timothy 2:18-15 has implications today and those that seek to implement their own agenda are not being obedient to Gods word and his instructions to his church and we all know how that worked out for Adam and Eve.

It is true that 1 Tim 2:14 implies that women tend to be more easily deceived than men, although I don't think the difference is that much.
Of course, there are also some moral failings that men are more often guilty of than women.

@ Notice how Eve fell for the lie because the fruit was attractive and pleasing to the eye. We see women today falling for lies because those lies are attractive and dressed up to look pleasing to the eye.
      Same problem again and again.
