I never thought I'd see the day the Corporal went ultralight instead of canvas and leather. I personally don't care for the Dyneema fabric stuff. It's prone to punctures by everything it touches and it crunches like a chip bag when the wind whips past it. I sold mine and went back to Silpoly/Silnylon as a half-measure. I hope you enjoy Dave's gear though. 😆 S/F

Hammock Gear makes some absolutely AMAZING gear. The attention to detail and craftsmanship that they put into their quilts and tarps is second to none in my opinion. They were my first choice when I was thinking of having a custom minus 10° UQ & matching minus 10° TQ made. Harry took time out of his vacation to answer my emails and helped me design a set of quilts that was exactly what I had envisioned. Both have a 5" tall baffle height to allow the massive amount of down room to loft . They made the Burrow TQ a custom short length, added mini Beastie D rings to the Incubator UQ to allow it to be attached to my hammock along the sides to better keep it in place as well as other custom elements on both quilts. They recently stopped taking requests for custom work so I'm glad I got them when I did! HG does awesome work and I totally recommend them to anyone looking for quilts. If anyone is interested, I have reviews of both quilts, as well as my 40° Econ Burrow in my channel..... Another great vid Cpl. !

People still haven’t grasped the concept that quality and durable materials won’t always be cheap. Just so folks know, dyneema fabric runs about $30-40 per yard and is relatively difficult to sew. So, HammockGear's pricing on this is not all that outrageous. Now whether or not it is worth it to you is a personal decision. If you are a young buck that likes to haul a 60 pound pack including a heavy tarp, go ahead and rock on. I would rather have my 25 pound pack (total including food and water) for a 5-day trip and go that route. That means I will likely have to spend more on good lightweight gear, but that is my choice and one that I choose often. For the record, I dont have one of these tarps, but I have been looking at them a lot lately.

Nice review Corporeal. I researched options for hammock tarps a fair bit and this has been my dream tarp for a while. I plan to upgrade to it eventually. A lot of commenters poopooing your review. Ignore them, you did a good job and are sharing your knowledge for free. This is a top of the line tarp, with top of the line materials, the raw materials are expensive and it requires more labor than other tarps. It’s ultra wide, and provides the best 360 degrees storm coverage. That’s why it’s as expensive as it is. But it is worth it. It’s not for everyone, it for those that can afford the best and want the best. People who love the outdoors and do long distances or those who have bad knees or backs etc will buy these ultralight products because it’s worth the weight savings to them.
Also, not a big deal but I believe they are called Hammock Gear, or HG for short, not HG Hammocks.

I'm so glad to see this review. I've had a hammock gear tarp (without doors) for years, as well as a tent made of the same material. I absolutely love it. They are some of my favorite pieces of gear. Great job brother.

Neat piece of gear but I don't know about $315 neat. Maybe if you really need something ultralight but personally I'd want something more durable, bit more opaque, and of course, cheaper. Even if it does add weight. Good video though, thank you!

The 'cost' of quality can't be overstated, just as the 'cost' of bad quality can't be understated. Afterall in the service one's rifle is made by the lowest bidder and lives depend on it. So the same for the hard charging hikers, etc. Over the years the expense is averaged out and it becomes less expensive by the year or number of camping days. In short, a better value in the long term.

Been using my HG Dyneema tarp for about a year now. Absolutely highly recommend. Try getting the continuous ridgeline and 4 tarp flies from Dutchwear...What a FANTASTIC combo. Love you guys, keep up the great content.

The 2 side pull outs are nice too, if you wanted to stake them out it gives extra head room.

I've been using a full zpacks setup for the last few years for my tarps tents and backpacks. Five years of guiding canoe trips it's outlasted and out performed my traditional gear.

Wow! That is one killer tarp and I like the fact that they include a snake skin with it. That is a must have!

  • @pteronarcyscalifornica694

The primary benefit of a tarp is it allows you shelter without isolating from your surroundings like a tent does.

If you like hiking up and over 11000 foot mountains like I do for a number of years you will likely work your way up to Dyneema. I heard it was originally used for racing yacht sails.

Cool fly/tarp. Seem's that most of the comments are about the price of a fly/tarp. I can understand the comments. It seems extravagant to buy this and use it a few times .. A poncho works. Good content Thanks

The snakeskin feature makes the price point worth it. Easy set up, easy break down and easy storage. I might get this just for sleeping on the ground.

Long time hammock camper here. Just a tip for those who haven’t used a tarp like this: if using with a hammock there’s rarely a need to stake so low. Just hang your hammock and tarp at your normal heights. The hammock will be safely tucked up under the tarp. The doors simply block the openings on either end of a regular setup.

Sure does beat the hell out of the regular old 10x12 Walmart tarps I use...but $250? Is it really worth that price tag?

Nice review I'm still out on what I want they are all pricey for what they are ,I was looking at the warbonnet superfly which was around 270. After customizing .thought man I can get cubin fiber for that Jack it was a little higher looked at material 18$ for a half yd I needed 8 so they really only have a little over 100$ in labor .very worth it for quality professional work

This really looks interesting. Wonder about puncture resistance and a bit concerned about the see-through nature of the fabric. Would love to try it, but to be honest, since my long-distance trekking and camping days are now pretty much over, $315 for a tarp could be perceived as grounds for divorce.

      @anywhereroam9698 Před 4 lety

Steven Hobbs from what I’ve read whilst they have great tensile strength they don’t have super great puncture resistance (depends on the thickness of DCF), nor do they have great abrasion resistance. But it’s highly waterproof and very light.

It looked like a really great product, right up until I saw the $300+ price. Wow. Sadly, way out of my league. But I'm sure there will be plenty of champagne campers eager to scoop them up, while the rest of us ordinary folks stick with our space blankets and Harbor Freight tarps. Sigh.

3:43 little tip, put one more wrap through that loop to make it a self tightening truckers hitch, saves you from having to hold it tight and hitch it up. Thanks for the video!
