A friend of mine comes from a family of poor sailors. Her grandmother was named "Maria" (very catholic family) but her parents, though capable sailors, were illiterate and accidentally spelt it "Marea" on the birth certificate. The girl wore the name proudly as her village was filled to the brim with Maria's (all very Catholic fisher families). Also, Marea literally means "sea" so it also fitted with her family's profession. She was the favourite grandmother of my friend and I recently gave her the idea of naming her daughter "Rhea" after Marea. It's one of my favourite girl names.
That is so beautiful!
What a fun story!
Love this story!!! So special thanks for telling us! SJ x
I think there is a thing like “fast fashion names” ... that kind of list would be so cool! Like names that were really popular and fast rising but then fell out of fashion and off the charts just as fast. I bet there are many names out there like that!
Funny you should mention that cause your name Shannon was a pretty fast rising and falling name I think
@@alfred6272 Haha who knew! I don’t really know any Shannons so maybe that’s why..
I think she did one of these!
Sj has definitely done a video on this!!:)
She did! It’s called the fastest dropping baby names to avoid
🌿 Juniper Bloomfield 🌿 Born March 29th at home right before sunrise!! We’re still deciding a middle name for her, but considering Dawn since that’s my middle name and it matches with the time she was born 🌅 So this video was very timely haha
Beautiful! You could use a name that means Dawn, like Zora or Roxanne
Congratulations!
So beautiful! Congratulations!!
Alba is also a beautiful one if you want a name meaning sunrise or dawn!
@@aifricnichleirigh Alba actually means white.
It will be nice for an Easter name theme next week for Easter
Ooh yes cute!!! xxx
Maeve is gonna become a really popular alternative to May because it’s basically the same just with the trendy “v”
cha ching!
My hubby and I have decided on Fable Evangeline for a girl! Fable has always been his top name and the more I hear it, the more I love it! I think it sounds so nice paired with such a classic, longer name like Evangeline.
Love that name choice! I've always loved the name Faye, but I think Fable makes it feel more like a "full" name? Not sure what word to use, but hopefully you know what I mean!
So pretty!!!
I could see Fable with a sister named Sonnet
Baby name Tuesday hehe you look absolutely fabulous today in this orange SJ!!!
OMG I know - I was so stressed yesterday!!!!
We are naming our first baby Cassandra Wren (coming this summer!) I really liked Rae/Rey for her middle name but wanted something a little more unique...but you brought up Wren in a previous video and my husband and I fell in love! Thanks for helping us name our baby girl!
Congrats! Such a beautiful name ❤️
@@ciara6279 Aww! Thank you so much!
pretty x grace
Love it!
Btw SJ, have you considered doing a list based off popular aesthetics? E.g, dark/light academia, cottagecore, grunge, artsy, soft pastel, e-girl/e-boy, gremlin/witchy etc. People go mad for this stuff - I'm one of them! 😊❤
YES!! I've got a list going...I need to get it out soon! I'm obsessed too! xxx
@@SJ_Strum Yes!!! Dark academia list ASAP! Twain, Lark, October, Rune...
I love cottagecore!
I’m 30 this year and am Millie Rose, such a common name now! My mum was obviously ahead of the trend
ive never seen a baby spelled like milly or milli . its always millie
Beautiful combination!
I love Grey in the middle spot!
I’m laughing at “goodbye Quinn, hello Quill,” as I have a little Peter Quinn, but there’s a superhero called Peter Quill.
Loved this - both "Maeve" and "Quill" featured - my whole name is a middle name idea haha!
I love Grey as a middle name 😍 Also have you heard Steve Irwin from Australia - his daughter Bindi named her baby girl “Grace Warrior” - I love that 🙌🏽🤩
Love to see an unusual royal name list. The new Swedish prince is called Julian Herbert Folke. Other unusual royal names like Emmanuel, Liam, Savannah, Isla
Ooh Herbert is a good one!
YEs I've done Royal Baby Names from around the world you can find in my playlist - I'll do another one though :-) x
I love the name Grace still, I’ve used it as a middle name and I just find it beautiful, simple and classic.
2 of my 6 kids have honor family names, and the others are more wild/unique. But all have significant meaning for us.
Love Viola and Tess and Wren
Ahhh that's so nice to have a mixture x
Really loved the concept for this video and the name suggestions were 👌👌
For next week- variations for boy middle name James!!
SJ! It’d be amazing to do a list of names that people have themselves but don’t like - either because they’re too out there, too common, can’t easily be pronounced, have been tormented at school or feel like it just doesn’t suit them. I love a unique name but my worst fear is giving my child a name they hate!
Charity is actually already on my list, I love it. I quite like the idea of using the under utilised Shakespearian names for the middle spot. Adrianna, Titania, Ariel, Lysandra, Katerina, Cassandra, Dorcas, Perdita, Florizel (which is actually a male character, but I think it sounds so pretty for a girl)
I just had a little girl last month, Sage Marley. We were thinking Marie as a middle name, but went with Marley instead. Both were family names but I thought Marley was a bit more fun!
Our little Marigold Jay was born March 21st! I definitely enjoyed all of your name videos over the last 9 months!
Love the name Viviana! I haven't seen this name anywhere until this video. Adding it to my baby name list ASAP!
Gorgeous isn’t it!!
Marisol was on my list for a while!! Cheetah girls 2 reference from the 2000's when I was a preteen lol!!
My middle name is Belle, after the Disney princess, I'm curious to see what alternatives we could come up with !!!
That marble fireplace behind you is magnificent
I have two middle names, one that is a family tradition for the oldest daughter and one that is my grandmother's first name.
Struggling with a middle name for Gianna! I’m watching all your videos and just subscribed you have so many ideas ❤️
My great grandma and all of her sisters had boy names for their middle names, which was really unusual in the 1910's when she was born. Her name was Mildred Raymond and one of her sisters was Erma Earl. I think it was really progressive of my great great grandparents lol.
This was a great idea!!
Omg so, I HATE my name (never liked my first name, my middle name is Lynne and I know FAR too many Lynns and I hate my surname because I hate my bio father). And I've been thinking of changing it for most of my life but never really found anything. The moment that Gray came up all I could imagine was the name "Rosalie Gray McDowell" (Rosalie has been my name crush for YEARS, and McDowell is my fiance's name) and It's so different from my name. It's very pretty, and it really has the vibe I want for myself. If I decide not to change my full name, I'd probably name a character in a story that or something because I love it.
Ah that's a shame not to like your name - but it's super easy to change!! I'm adding a middle name to my name via deed poll right now :-) x
I was born with a name I hated too. I used to get bullied badly throughout primary school and high school because of it. I went through an identity crisis in my early 20’s and ended up changing it legally. Ironically “Rosalea” was my second first name (my first name was hyphenated) so I just go by that name now or “Rosie” for short.
I gently encourage you to do it if it’s making you feel that way about it. You deserve to feel proud when your name is being called. The moment I changed my name... it changed my life! I finally felt free, happy and confident. Good luck and god bless. 🙏
if you have a step dad/mum you could change it to that or your mums maiden name or just last name
@@addelynrose5477 Honestly my Mom's not much better lol, if I were to choose a surname of my own to use before I get married I'd probably use "Timmerman" which was my great grandmother's maiden name (since otherwise I'd share my mother's surname which I don't want)
Great choices as always Sj💕 Viola here in Italy is booming in the last years!! we just pronounce the “Vi” sound at the beginning of the name differently (in the same way as the “Vi” at the beginning of Viviana)
Loving this orange shirt!!
Wonderful choices!
Love these names
I'm currently pregnant and if it's a girl, her middle name will be Hazel. I just love names with a Z in there!
Love love love your videos
Josie's been a name I've love for YEARS and hate that it's getting more popular 😭 can we keep it quite pleasd 😂😂
Hahah, my full name is Amy Cathryn and when you said those two together, I snapped my head to the screen.
It makes me so happy that you like the name Annie! My middle name is Rose, which is so popular, but I've always thought it went nicely with Annie! All of my family members call me Annie Rose, rather than just Annie. This was a great list! I love Grey as a middle name!
Catalina is beautiful! And Katinka wow I've loved this one for a little while, it's so great!
Could you please do a 1870 top 100 baby names list!
There are some really interesting ones on there e.g. Clement, Amos, Ebenezer, Lavinia, Rosetta etc.
I bet Loretta would be on this list, family name for me. !!
Oh yes I’m sure there are some great ones on there!!!!
Ooooh yes I love the super vintage ones! Thank you x
Looking through ancestry I have an ancestor called “cypher” this was during the 1800s.
I first heard Una on the show Puffin Rock and I've become so obsessed!
Yes! Thank you! Was trying to remember where I had heard that name before. lol
It's a horrible irish name
I love Colette & Lois for middle names (first names too!) They go well with names that have a Y or IE ending sound.
Also, instead of Elizabeth for a middle name, we went with Evangeline for our second daughter's middle name (Arya Evangeline). It means bringer of good news. 💖
I'm reading the Lawhead Pendragon Cycle right now and one of the characters is Charis. Also another virtue name for Grace could be Verity, Which I was surprised you didn't mention it when you were talking about names for Poldark in another video!
I've been watching these brilliant videos for years and now they are even more exciting because after a year of trying we are expecting our first baby! XXX 🎊❤️
Congratulations! Any name ideas yet ? X
Thank you my husband and i are going to start a list together soon 😊
Ah Jen!!!! That's so exciting - huge congratulations!!! SJ xxxxx
@@SJ_Strum aww thank you so much! your videos have brightened up lockdown for me 😊😘 xx
We named our baby girl Winter Bea. Bea after my great grandma who passed away a month before I found out I was pregnant. Her name was Beatrice but she hated it and always went by Bea. ❤
I love Bea ♥
I really want to use family names for middle names, but if I ever change my mind I have a couple first and middle name combinations I love; Eden Layne and Autumn Wren. I’m obsessed with them!
We used middle names as a way to name our children after great-grandmothers and grandmothers. Our daughters are named after two great-grandmothers with Andrea Louise and Lorelei Gwendolynn. Our son was named after both of his grandmothers with Luka Jansen Patrick.
i love names that are known but not common. one of my fave childhood books was my sister jodie by jacqueline wilson and i really like the name jodie from that. its known as a name but its not even in the top 1000 names. finding names like that is gold dust
One of my daughters is named Nora Charis! Love love love that deep Greek definition and unique spelling. ❤️
My family has often used grandmothers names/ variations of their names as middle names, and we’re given our own unique name as a first name. For example, my mum is Catherine Anne (her grandmother was Kate-Anne), Lauren Christine (had a grandmother called Christina) and me, Hannah Joan (grandmother called Johan) 💕
It’s funny - a lot of these popular middles names are names I really like for first names 😅
Yay my name is Rosa and I've been waiting for it to appear in one of your videos😂😀. Josephine/Josie and Una are two of my fave names!
I think it would be cool for you to go through the alphabet like a video on a names and b names etc i love your videos ❤️❤️❤️
Just a couple of ideas, for Marie, if you like the French aspect of it, some other options are Elodie or Claudine. For Elizabeth, you could go with a name from the same root, like Isobel, or a name with similar letters and length, Felicity.
I love this video! I was thinking about other names for Mary and I remembered my childhood nannies name - Maritess- i thought this would be grace because it has the same sound and a bit of an edge to it with the ‘T’ which makes it a bit more modern!
Oh wow that's a gorgeous name!! i've not heard it anywhere :-) x
Have you ever done a modern Greek name list? I would LOVE to hear that one!
We chose to use Grace as a first name, I really pondered over the fact it’s incredibly popular as a middle name. It made it really difficult to stick to the name 😬 then finding a middle name was super tricky! We decided on Grace Olivia in the end 😊
Oh wow - it's actually so great to use a classic middle at the beginning as it's less common there!
We also went for Grace as a first name! I think it’s gorgeous ❤️ Grace Olivia flows beautifully. We have a Grace Vienna as felt a bit brave in the middle 😂
So pretty! Every Grace I’ve met has been so incredibly kind❤️
@@christiegeorge3958 Vienna is a beautiful name 🥰 I literally chose Olivia an hour before we registered her 😆 I’d spent weeks trying to find the ‘right’ middle name and it was a very impulsive decision in the end
@@ciara6279 that’s so lovely of you to say. Our Grace has a very soft nature (slightly bias) but everyone has did her name reflects her manner x
I love short and kind of gender-neutral middle names like Blake or Wren. I feel like they go really well with longer first names which are my favourite!
I absolutely love Grey and Rhodes 😍😍 Defo going down on my name list
Glad you like them!!! Grey is my favourite I think! xxx
@@SJ_Strum so pretty 😍
This list was so interesting. I specially like Charis for Grace as I am getting tired of
all the Graces around. :)
Love these alternatives for middle names I’m surprised Lyn/Lynn/Lin and Lee Weren’t on the list
love rhodes!! i always thought Lily Rhodes in Gossip Girl was such a cute name
Just saw some vintage yearbook names and had to dump them on yall!!
- Nelda
- Leotha
- Oleta
- Lillie Lou (so precious)
- Willie Ruth
- Wanda Fay
I've got a Solita Una :) we needed something simple as Solita is very mouthy haha. We love it x
middle names are the only names where ive figured out what i really like, i love the middle names Rain and Grey/Gray, i love the one syllables
Ooo SJ have you got a little announcement of yr own to make? Xx
I like long middle names with short first names and vice versa. I've been pondering the name Rosewyn/ Rosenwyn (meaning white rose) lately. It's close to Rose, but so unique and flowy. Virtue names as middle names are another favourite of mine. Joy is definitely a contender, and so is Hope and Faith. Grace I am on the fence about, since it has been kind of popular.
I find it really interesting the differences and similarities between UK and US middle names. Mine is Rose ;) but I've found that Lynn is super duper common stateside and it didn't make the list whereas I have never met a middle spot Louise 🤷♀️
Absolutely love Tess and Wren!!! Do you know anything about the name Kerrik? I know of a man with that name and I'm absolutely in love with it!
I'm been so obsessed with Katinka ever since you first mentioned it. Katinka, Tinks, Tink, Tinker bell 😍 My husband is not going for it. Maybe for a cat one day?? 😂
Our first little girl's (if we have one!) middle names are both in here! They're the middle names of our mothers, so we absolutely love them together :)
I just wanted to say that when I saw the names Grace and Joy together it reminded me of my neighbor, who's name is Joyce! I always think that name is so beautiful and it means joyful. A good option for people who like the name Grace as well.
I love these types of videos :)
I have three children, 1 boy and 2 girls Lorcan Castor, Karlotta Malvina, and Evren Asteria. Their names are definitely unusual where I live,my husband and I definitely had a lot of fun coming up with them.
Viola is my grandmothers name! and her siblings are Arthur and Constella! interesting combination for the 1940s/1950s 🎀🌟
PS! Marnie is SUPER popular here in Namibia 🇳🇦 with the full name: Marnè and then Marnie as the nickname ☺️
AND my best friend is called Charis!
AND (omg this video is basically just my life) i’m also friends with a Lucia but she pronounces it: Loo-sha instead of the ‘chia’ ending 🤍
Oh wow cool you live in Namibia I really want to visit there!
Oh wow you've got great names in your family!! xxxxx
Constella is so pretty!
I LOVE Skye, Alma, Ria, Wren, Joplin, Eliza, Charis, Rhodes/Rhoda, and Isla as either first or middle names. I have friends with a daughter Caroline Mae & my mom is fostering a dog she renamed Maeve. 🥰
Iris could be a lovely alternative to Rose for a middle name. Classic, and also a flower even if Iris the name usually means iris of the eye.
Agatha got me singing 😂
WandaVision anyone?
I'm Cassandra "Cassie" Lane, and we named our daughter Elora Lane. 😊 I've always loved my middle name. It was cute and uncommon!
Our newest baby girl has the middle name Eliza named after an Elizabeth! so fun to see that on your list! - Rebekah
Really lovely list but I must say my personal preference is to keep it very Traditional with middle names
I especially love Mary, Catherine, Jane, Elizabeth
One name I’d definitely consider tho is Alma I hadn’t heard of that being used before in the English speaking world but I love it!
Yeah I also love Margaret and Agnes which weren’t on this list
Yes they do work well for a good reason :-) xxx
My daughter is Wren Lola Gray.
We’ve used Gray with an ‘a’ because it’s meant to honour my Dad and brother-in-law who are both Graham. any future children boy or girl will also have Gray as a middle name.
I’ve loved Maeve as a middle name for years and years but as it’s getting popular if I were to have another girl I’d probably use Maude (similar but also a family name).
We named our daughter Marlowe Rose Elise. Her first name was highly influenced by you! We used Rose as a representation of love, and Elise is a mix of her Grandmother's middle names. I love the melody of it, and having the double middle name makes it a little more unique, but I sometimes think we should have used something braver than Rose.
Love all 3 of the names! Stunning!
My daughter's name is Élise Rose (both family names!) :) Adore the name Marlowe - it's going on my list for baby #2 who is due in June :)
@@PandoraStolen Thank you!
@@charlenemcgovern5405 Élise Rose is so beautiful! Congrats on baby #2 coming soon!
You chose well with Rose! Perfectly bridges Marlowe and Elise, AND I love that it represents love. 😍
I have a Luna Dorothy (after my late grandmother) and Skye Valerie (after my fiancé's late grandmother). Not a massive fan of Valerie, but we felt middle names are for family members and first names are where we have the fun.
Yeah I really like including family names for middle names
Luna Dorothy sounds almost magical!
I have a luna may (may after grandmother) and skyler lisann (after both mothers... Lisa and Ann) !!
I've actually always loved the name Valerie, and I think it goes really well with Skye. Great choice in my book!
I love Valerie
I’m using Kit for a first name!
my name is Una, and I've always received compliments on my name, because it's so unique, but still very simple. my great-grandmothers name was Alma, and where I come from this name was quite popular back in the day. I've had a crush on this name for the longest time. keeping it in my back pocket for when/if I ever have another baby girl. :)
Agatha may have recently gained an association with a character from WandaVision, which may influence its popularity.
Trying not to spoil anything for anyone who hasnt watched it yet
OMG as soon as i SJ said ‘agatha’ all i heard was THE SONG🤣🤣
@@alicecook2545 ME TOO!!
I have the middle name Victoria and I’ve never met anyone else with it so I didn’t expect it to be a common one!!
I love Rowe, Raye, Wren, Sage, Faye, Aura, Fawn, Vienna for middle spots (mostly one syllable)
and for a different classic/feminine why not Clara or Claire eg Arabella Claire or Eleanor Clara
Eleanor Clara is wonderful!!
My FIRST name is Anne and I use Annie as a nickname and use them interchangeably but my middle name is Ruth. I just think that they are two really easy names to pair together
My moms name is Lucia I love it. She pronounces it Lu(shh)a. I love the pronunciation Lu(chi)a 💛
Instead of Kate maybe Carey or Carys? Catinca is a name I know because of an adorable child actress in the movie The Fall. I love the Scottish spelling of Mary, Mairi. Instead of Mae, maybe Faye? Joan as an alternative for Anne? Siân is the Irish form of Jane. Alternatives for Elizabeth; Elisheva, Evangeline, Eilish, Eugenie or even Azalais. Instead of Grace how about Luce, meaning light? Róisín, is an Irish name meaning little rose. Lucinda or Therese would be a good swap for Louise. I like the spelling Oona rather than Una.
Carys is really growing on me for a middle spot!
A friend of mine is named Juliet Luce - she’s from France and I’ve always thought her name is beautiful
I’ve been brainstorming some baby girl names (I already have them for my boys) and I’m thinking Nelinha (meaning Emmanuel) and Adelaide :) both are Portuguese names and have biblical ties! For one middle name I will use Theresa because it’s a family name, but still unsure in the other.... love this video btw!
With Charis you could also go with the Welsh spelling 'Carys' which I think is lovely
Love Viola, Kit/Kitty, Mimi/Gigi, Marnie, Annie, Wren, Eliza, Charity, Cerys, Ivory, Bloom & Lilac
My daughter and I have the middle name Ann and I was planning on using Wren if I have another girl. Due in June. SJ- always on target!!!
I think Jade is also a lovely alternative for the middle spot. It's also a stone/gem so a very lovely and precious name!
My niece’s middle name is Jade. I love it!
I'd say the best ones here are Rose and May - replacement faves are definitely Rosa and Lilac (then 2nd best replacement is Lucia (but the way that's said like Lucy)
I love a middle spot that can turn into a nickname. My middle is Danielle and so everyone called me Jami Dan. My brother was Jace Tyler we called him Jay Ty! Just brings all the warm memories
