Restraint is the hallmark of a master jazz musician. When you know someone is a technical master but makes conscious melodic choices for the sake of the music, rather than going crazy with pyrotechnics to get woos from the crowd, that’s the pinnacle of musicianship. Restraint and taste.

it's a very common sound on "take the a train"! If you look at that D7b5 relative to the all the notes in C Major, you get that F# and that Ab, which almost makes a full whole tone scale. C (D) E (F#) -G- (Ab) -A- B. All you need is that Bb and you got it.
You basically make a decision between what sound you want by deciding to play either B or Bb on a downbeat of that chord, both sound great in context.
      C D E F# Ab Bb

Thanks you so much for doing this transcription and this vidéo.
This solo is a real treasure for who wants to learn how to improvise jazz from the base.
You have all kind of simple rythmic patterns, clear chords tone and exemplary transition between 2 chords.
Learn and understand this solo in 12 keys and you can solo jazz !!

Bar 35 took me completely by surprise; gorgeous
Same with bars 53/54 - I went into 'stank face' overdrive.

Great stuff. Not my favorite style of drumming - but great stuff. Love the way Warren ends with a Davenport Blues phrase.

That rhythm section found the perfect groove to suck all the life out of A Train. Might as well walk to your destination. Didn't give Warren much to work with.

@koobmoon 745 sure it can, but you wouldnt use not terrible in a positibe way unless you were quoting someone who said the word terrible. If you actually didnt mean it negatively then i agree with you
