- Welcome to my channel. This week please enjoy part two, the finale video on the Reliable Safe restoration. I believe this antique safe was made sometime after 1918 but probably in the 1920’s or 1930’s. There is a patent date of 1918 on the lever handle. It’s on the smaller side of the rolling safe types but still a very stout unit! It was made by The Reliable Safe and Lock Company from Covington Kentucky. I found this safe at an estate sale in Burlington, NC and it was originally sold by a distributor in New Bern, NC. The front as all original, but it was evident that the top, side and casters had been repainted at some point, making for a perfect “not all original” restoration.
I stripped the paint and whatever else was caked on this door, sanded, bondo'd, primed and painted with several coats of gloss clear, then wet sanded and topped with two coats of gloss clear to achieve and very shiny and slick finish.
I removed the lock, which was a huge ordeal for me as I have never done this before, but was able to get it cleaned and serviced. I polished all the metal parts and nickel plated the lever handle and the backing plate for the dial, another first for me. In the end it was a pain but it all went back together just fine and works greats.
I wanted to try painting the pinstripes and the logo myself, but I called a audible and called a pro in. I just didn't want to put this much effort into the project and have the logo come out sub-par. Jamie did a fantastic job, especially since I gave him little to go on.
For reference, some of the other popular brands of safes around this same time period were; Hall’s Safe, Cary Safe, Diebold safe, and Victor Safe co.

Congratulations on a beautiful restoration 😁👌👌👌❤️❤️❤️
Thank you very much!
Thats quite a restoration. Inside and out. Awesome job.
Thanks Dale. Appreciate you tuning in.
Impressive detail work David. Beautiful restoration
Thanks Beth!
Wow! The safe looks amazing!
Thanks Magdad. I think the work that my buddy the pinstriper did is what really sets it off. I was going to do the outline myself (that's not to hard), and get a decal for the logo. Glad I went the other route.
The work you put into this safe really paid off. It looks amazing.
Appreciate it Ryan!
I admire your skill set Mr. David! Just an incredible job! Gooder than good stuff!!👍
Thanks Vic, glad you enjoyed it. One of my most challenging for sure.
Very nice job. This video is exaclty what I've been looking for. Thanks!
Appreciate it and glad you enjoyed the video.
Brother that's a hell of a restoration project! I don't even want to guess how many hours you got in it. Beautiful!
Thank you brother. Yeah, no way I want to know the hours either LOL. Appreciate the comments.
Got the name of your channel from 357 Magdad and I’m glad I did, this was an excellent restoration. Thank you for sharing.
Thanks Mike and welcome to the channel. Feel free to share with others!
Very well done. I would have added a relocker but I can see why you would want to keep it all original.
Thank you very much. Tell me what a relocker is. This was my first safe restoration. Thanks
@@westhighlandsshop Sorry, I didn't mean to be cryptic. An easy way to force a safe is to remove the lock with violence- explosives etc. So put a plunger which will jam the bolts closed but have it held out by a steel cable or similar. The other end of the cable is attached to the lock. Remove the lock and you fire the plunger. That is a dead relocker (or "anti explosive device"). There is a more sophisticated version. Do you want details of that?
That’s okay, but thanks!
Excellent job mate, looks fantastic 👍
Appreciate it!
How awesome. Your work is always impress 😃😃
Thank you so much 😀
Absolutely beautiful David. Your patience and workmanship is an inspiration to all of us! Regards, Bill.
Thanks Bill. And yes this one did take some patience. I walked away several times and let it sit for a while!
👍👍👍
OMG THAT WAS GREAT... HOW I WISH YOU WERE MY NEIGHBOR.
