  • This is a 2 part video on the changing of the oil, oil filter & Air filter on a 2011 V-Star 950 Tourer. This is my first attempt since I had this bike to service it myself.

Great effort! +1 on the filter comments, priming and tool tightening. Hand tight is good. Change your crush washer on your next change. Cheap insurance against leaks. I also put a small magnet on the bottom of the filter. Not sur if it works but I've been told by techs that it'll catch small filings.

Good stuff, thanks. Good idea on the magnet not only to trap more crud, but maybe, just maybe if you get a magnet strong enough it will help to change those stubborn traffic lights that think you don't exist.

KIllercorps85, you noticed that too, LOL. I hand tight my filters and never have had any leaks. Also. I don't use the jack, just the 2 x 4 and I get enough clearance. I think it takes 4 QTS and 8 oz. to fill up ( 950cc). I want to clean up my garage by doing a yard sale so I can buy me the new Yamaha dual Sport once I clear some room. Thank you for your video, more hate from the oil change shop guys, LOL

I have the 2009 v star 950 tourer and I recommend replacing the crush washer on the oil plug before replacing it.

No need in filling filter with oil. Just put some new oil on the rubber gasket before installing filter. You just wasted oil by filling the filter. When you turned filter on it's side you lost oil on the ground. Once engine is started the oil filter will fill up on its own.

      Yes and no.
He wasted oil by using so much to prime the filter. About a quarter of what he used would be plenty. You need to prime the filter to prevent oil starvation.

FirstXRS it's been about 15,000 miles ago since I shot this video so I learned some things along the way.

@killercorps85 If your referring to the oil filter I agree 100% That was the way the dealer had installed it on the 600 mile break in service.

K & N oil filters have a nut welded on the end for removal.

Honestly, I would say as soon as the oil starts to get dark. Treat it like a baby.
