The sign of a truly great confectioner is that s/he makes it look easy.
If you want an easy candy to make, try soft caramels! A candy thermometer can be bought relatively cheap from the store, and a basic caramel is sugar, butter, corn syrup, and heavy cream, which are all available at a supermarket. Plenty of good recipes to find online for soft caramels.
