If you don't like Conan,
then to hell with you.
Crom!!!
Time enough for sitcoms in the grave!
She’ll get use to it and like it
My favorite things in this movie:
1) Conan and Subotai basically being like "My god is awesome, your god f*cking sucks", but they're still friends.
2) "To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentations of their women." Best quote.
3) "There comes a time, thief, when the jewels cease to sparkle, when the gold loses its luster, when the throne room becomes a prison, and all that is left is a father's love for his child." Second best quote.
4) Valeria is right up there with Ripley, Sarah Conner and Princess Leia. She returned from the afterlife to defend her man. And some people act like there were never great action heroines.
5. Conan : I remember days like this when my father took me to the forest and we ate wild blueberries. More than 20 years ago. I was just a boy of four or five. The leaves were so dark and green then. The grass smelled sweet with the spring wind.
[pause]
Conan : Almost 20 years of pitiless cumber! No rest, no sleep like other men. And yet the spring wind blows, Subotai. Have you ever felt such a wind?
Subotai : They blow where I live too. In the north of every man's heart.
Conan : It's never too late, Subotai.
Subotai : No. It would only lead me back here another day. In even worse company.
Conan : For us, there is no spring. Just the wind that smells fresh before the storm.
Don't forget Basil Poledouris Epic Soundtrack... its Monumental !!!
But Jennifer Lawrence is the first female action star so those other names are clearly following the path that she paved. 😆
@@archstanton664 "But Jennifer Lawrence is the first female action star"
Said no one ever.
@rikk319 WRONG! She said that...about herself. Peak narcissism.
James Earl Jones was hypnotizing Conan‘s mother at the beginning of the film. That’s why he maintains eye contact and she lowers her sword. Welcome to the world of Robert E Howard, where it is always survival of the fittest.
Yes, and then he tries to hypnotize Conan at the end of the movie.
The filmmakers maybe could've used special effects during these scenes to make it clear that Thulsa Doom had magical powers of persuasion.
@@Chou-seh-fu I’m glad they didn’t. James Earl Jones sells it without being too on the nose.
To expand on this, Thulsa Doom worships Set, an evil snake god. Because of the way rabbits or other prey animals will sometimes freeze to avoid being seen, snakes were thought to be able to bewitch or hypnotize their prey, so Doom gets this ability from Set. Throughout Robert E. Howard’s writings there is a recurring idea of evil snake men seeking to subjugate humanity, including in the stories of Kull, a sort of predecessor to Conan.

The soundtrack alone is worth the price of admission- one of the hands-down best soundtracks ever. This has been a favorite film of mine since the day it came out.
I've seen the score listed as being in the 50 best all time, pretty good for a B movie. Also one of the music sequences is named "The Orgy"
My Friends and I were huge fans of the film since it came out (Well, since about '84, as we were all too young to see it in Theaters on release.) and all enormous fans of Basil Poledouris magnificent work. However, for years we had only access to the crappy cassette version. I'll never forget when back in 1992 when we were at a Music Store (Remember Those?) and a few minutes in, one of my friends lets out a cry of triumph and holding over his head he's holding a Varese Sarabande Remaster CD of the Soundtrack.
Glorious Day, Glorious Time, Glorious Music.
One of the best Sword and Sorcery movies ever made
The best, in my opinion.
Nope its the best!
And one of the few, sadly...
It is not a very good adaptation of the book Conan. But it is a stellar movie on it's own indeed.
Prefer the books. Heck even the comics. Arnold was still getting his accent straight so they don’t have him talk much. You don’t get to hear Conan spit any wisdom like he does in the books and short stories. One of my favorite sayings comes from when Conan and Belit are talking about his beliefs.
“Let teachers and philosophers brood over questions of reality and illusion. I know this, if life is illusion, then I am no less an illusion, and being thus, the illusion is real to me. I live, I burn with life, I love, I slay, and am content.”
Conan is pretty much the only thing I have left that hasn’t been tainted by Hollywood though. So I’m glad these are basically fan fictions.
The sword Conan cut in half in the final fight then uses to behead thulsa doom is his fathers sword
Coincidentally it breaks where the snow did not reach, during quenching, while manufacturing the sword at the start of the movie.
The comparison you keep making between LotR and Conan is the difference between High Fantasy and Sword & Sorcery. Conan is not a hero like Aragorn. Both are renown fighters, and both eventually become kings, but Conan isn't guided by high-minded principles. He isn't willing to sacrifice himself to protect the innocent. He kills Thulsa Doom and his captains for revenge. He rescues the Princess because he was paid to do so. If the only way to kill Thulsa Doom required him to kill or sacrifice the Princess, he absolutely would have done so.
Conan: whole family, village, bloodline destroyed, put into slavery, decides to get revenge..
LOTR: gay dudes chasing midgets with too much cgi..

Yup. Made that same comment elsewhere. I'm personally more like Conan (6'3" 250lbs), but Subotai is my favorite character. Proving himself time and time again to be a loyal, competent and trustworthy ally. Interestingly in contrast to what Conan's Father says at the start about Men NOT being Trustworthy. Gerry Lopez did a seriously underappreciated job.
The Conan stories were based on a sort of pagan morality that is hard for modern people to understand and you very rarely see represented in modern stories, even when they are set in the past. It's why you keep saying "but where are the good guys?"
Lord of the Rings blended that Pagan virtue with a fundamentally Christian morality which modern people in the West feel more at home with. (yes, even if you think you're a modern secular atheist, you're a product of that worldview)
The music is like another character. I’ve loved this since I first saw it in 1982. Grew reaction!!
I have heard thousands of film soundtracks over the years, Basil Poledouris made one of the best ever (Over a Body of great work in general.) It took about 30 years, but his 'Conan' score has finally gotten more of the immense credit it deserves.
The part when Conan anwers the question of "What is best in life" is an actual quote from "Secret history of the Mongols".
A royal family chronicle of Ghengis Khan, also said to be the oldest surviving literary work in a Mongolian language.
Well, you might consider doing one of these reaction things with Ralph Bakshi's version of Lord of the Rings (1978) assuming that you haven't seen THAT yet. Though if you love the 2000 version that much, then you might not dig it. It's pretty different and not ultra-popular like those more recent versions.
My favorite line is "eeEYaarrghl rwARLlgh!"
Definitely. Followed closely by "ahhahhhrghhgh"
So good, memorable!
I wonder who wrote that timeless dialogue ?😏

Yes.. he won championships .. great partner character along with Valeria and The wizard Akiro ( Mako ) ..Mako is a great narrator
I find it interesting that at the beginning of the film, Conan's lays out His Judgement (And seems to have the film itself behind him), that Men cannot be trusted, yet Subotai PROVES himself multiple times, to be faithful and loyal, fighting Conan's Fights, Saving his Life & even Crying for him. Although I'm more like Conan (6' 3" 320lbs by 11th Grade) Subotai is by far my favorite Character.
@torikazuki8701 I used to play MMO'S online. I'd always roll a ranger type class with the bow. It was always fun to group up with a tank warrior class.
26:54 Valeria is such a ride or die chick. Love her devotion to Conan.
She later comes back from death itself as she promised to fight at his side. That’s bad ass and romantic folks.
Tons of novels on Conan who was written in the 1930s by Robert E. Howard. Conan the Cimmerian sullen eyes under a mirthless brow and of swarthy complexion and long jet black hair was a barbarian, thief, mercenary, buccaneer, freebooter, general of armies and eventually King. He distrusted magic and sorcerers...rescued women from the jaws of summoned demons more than once. This was first depiction of this character on film...definitely inspired by the old Celtic Myths as the name Conan is still used in Ireland/Scotland today.
Marvel Comics has depicted this character in the Savage Sword of Conan. Fun Fact..Jason Momoa would reprise the role of Conan in a film in the 2010s.
@@chrismais Sadly not a good representation. I absolutely hate that "new" Conan movie for multiple reasons. Mostly because that movie lacked any sense or logic and Conan is shown as a mindless Killer for no real reason. I liked how they depicted him in the Marvel Comics in the 80's though.
@@Ezekielepharcelis I agree with you 100 percent. It was not up to standard at all.
While I admire the Work and World Howard created (And this film was a masterful adaption), Howard himself was sadly very 'Brittle'. While externally strong & creatively gifted, he couldn't live without his Mother, self-deleting at... 33? That's tragic but also Sad for other, less oomplimentary reasons. :-/
@torikazuki8701 Yes sadly he believed that at past that age there was no purpose living..and that old age had no merit to it. He believed at 33 years old he had aged out past his prime and tragically he believed that was his solution. Ironic.

Conan is my 2nd favorite movie of all time. Is great, and the soundtrack is from another world. Great reaction! and dont forget... "Civilized men are more discourteous than savages because they know they can be impolite without having their skulls split, as a general thing." (Robert E. Howard)
The music in this is next level
Epic. I had bought the soundtrack on cassette in the 80s. One piece of music is not on it, but I found it here on youtube. Don't know if it's still online. Music from when the woman is being sacrificed to the giant snake.

Robert E Howard's setting for Conan was grim and had a lot of grey area.
Conan was more like a force of nature than a traditional hero.
32:43 that is Conan's father's sword that he cut in half.
Fun fact: His father's sword broke not because his father wasn't a good blacksmith. It broke because the sword Conan found in the tomb was forged by the giants his father was telling him about at the beginning. That's why his sword is called the Atlantean sword.

What Is Best In Life?
>>To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and to hear the lamentation of their women.
I THINK, with the whole scene where the demons or whatever came to take him, they weren’t MAKING them come take him they just knew they would because he was dying. The writings and stuff on him I assume were meant for protection.
The Wizard mentioned that this place was special and that the spirits of this place would extract a heavy toll. Conan might have lived, but they would have taken his soul. But in the end they accepted Valeria's offer to pay the price. A life for a life with a slightly delayed payment as without her Conan might have died without her. For what s the use of saving his life if he dies the next day anyway?
The writings were essentially the spell to heal Conan. Magic in the Hyborian Age (when Conan lived), was less flashy than what we are used to these days. It's slow and complicated. Unless you like to sacrifice people that is.
Conan the Barbarian is not another Lord of the Rings. It is based on the novels of Robert E. Howard. As you saw the quote by Nietzsche "That which does not kill me makes me stronger" it is somewhat based on his philosophy and the concept of the will to power.
Indeed. While there is SOME truth to the concept, I find it more often pretentious than not. EVERYONE has limits and eventually they will be reached and we will break. Consider- What if Conan had NEVER been freed from the 'Wheel of Pain'? It would eventually have ground him to dust, as it apparently did to everyone else.
I'm 53, and have been enduring Chronic Pain due to inoperable spinal damage since 1993. What it has done to my life I wouldn't wish on anyone. I am reminded of a quote from another movie Arnold starred in, and replacing 'Terminator' with 'Chronic Pain', fits perfectly-
"Listen, and understand! That Terminator is out there! It can't be bargained with. It can't be reasoned with. It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear! And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are *dead!*"
We all have limits. Luckily most people never reach them.
Conan's world in the Hyborian Age, differs greatly from Tolkien's Middle Earth in story and concept. Tolkien constructed an entirely original world inspired by European folklore that was to be a fantastical history of the lost mythology of Anglo-Saxon England (and the "Men of the West" in a bit more general sense). Robert E. Howard's the Hyborian Age is a more realistic history of a fictional period of Earth's past, and reflects all cultures we have today, but in more ancient forms during a time 10,000 or more years prior to our modern known historical age. It was the time during and after Atlantis, and other legendary stories told throughout generations well into our cultures today. This genre is called Sword and Sorcery, and it was a dark and brutal time, full of ambiguity representing the true human condition. The two fictional writings are both less flashy than much of today's high fantasy stories, but inspired nearly all.
actually there really was once a realm known as Cimmeria. it was there in old testament biblical time. I don't think it is mentioned in the bible. it just existed at that time (about the time of the diasporia of the tribes of Israel) somewhere north of Turkey. though history of that time is extremely fragmentary it is a part of the recorded history as the name of a nation and it's people.
From Wikipedia:
Cimmeria, an ancient name of Crimea, a peninsula in the northern part of the Black Sea
Bosporan Kingdom, a polity of antiquity located on Crimea, also referred to as Cimmeria
Cimmerians, an ancient people who lived in the North Caucasus in the 8th and 7th century BC, usually associated with the ancient Cimmeria or Crimea
When I was little I got my 2 dollars allowance. I got on my bike and went to the store and got Conan The Barbarian comics! When they made it into a movie, it was awesome! Arnold Schwarzenegger is the perfect Conan! Excellent performances and the action made this a classic! Next Conan The Destroyer is a great one as well!
It's entertaining, but no one should go into it expecting the same tone, etc.
@@w1975b Indeed. It's fun, but way, way less than the original.
The actress playing the princess (Olivia d'Abo) was Glorious to Behold (YES she was Underage at the time, but she's a year older than *I* am, so sue me. ^_~ ) I think she was one of the prettiest girls I'd ever seen, until I saw Jennifer Connelly in '86's 'Labyrinth', then I was completely smitten.
@@torikazuki8701 Good taste in women...I'm the same age as Olivia, and I was smitten, too back then, as well as with Jennifer.
"Last Action Hero" is a movie you can't miss.
Curious fact: part of the film was shot in Spain, and the actor who plays Conan as a child is a Spanish actor who would later achieve a certain renown in the country: Jorge Sanz.
In order to understand what kind of culture and way of life these characters lead, note that in terms of the warrior part they live a bit in the style of the Mongols and other peoples who preceded them, but it is assumed that all these events occur thousands of years before writing had even been invented, or at most around that time.
A little unmentioned detail about the scene with the sword that Conan finds in the tomb. Cimmerians (Conan's race) are meant to be descendants of Atlantean colonists, and the tomb he finds is presumed to be a former Atlantean king. The sword he finds is of Atlantean craftsmanship, which incidentally was propping up the king's skeleton throughout the years. A lot of symbolism in this film and callbacks to Nietzsche's philosophy. The film is more layered than that of a simple action film, though it is dressed in that guise.
The soundtrack by Basil Poleodouris is AMAZING....
This is in my top five favorite movies! I love Conan!
* I guess Conan is 35 years old in this story. Unfortunately, they skipped over 69 Conan stories(30 of which are short stories), from the time that Conan is 14 or 15 years old(in Conan of Venarium) to when this story takes place. Which falls in between *The* *Flame* *Knife* short story and the *Conan* *and* *the* *Shaman's* *Curse* novel. Thulsa Doom is actually supposed to be a lich necromancer, and is the arch nemesis of "Kull the Conqueror"(an Atlantean, and direct ancestor of Conan's). The Hyborian Age takes place primarily in Africa, circa 30,522 BC.

I used to read Conan the Barbarian comic books when Marvel Comics owned the rights to the character at the time. I was in middle school back then and the themes in Conan were pretty mature compared to the other superhero titles in Marvel Comics, with lots of implied sex and violence although it couldn't be shown too graphically because comics at that time were governed by something called the Comics Code Authority. When this movie came out I was older and I finally could see the true vision of Conan's author, Robert E. Howard. I was blown away. I feel this is one of those iconic movies where the feel can't be duplicated by any sequel (they managed to squeeze one more out but wasn't that good). If you are a fan of the fantasy sword and sorcery genre, this counts as a classic epic.
Two sequels, but Arnorld wasn't available for the second one, so after some time in development hell, they made it as Kull the Conqueror with Kevin Sorbo (the reason why it's Kull instead of Conan is because Sorbo didn't want to redo a character already played).
@@SuddenReal I remember the Kull movie with Kevin Sorbo. I was aware he was also a character written by Robert E Howard but I never knew his movie was supposed to be a Conan sequel. Thanks for the backstory on that.
Conan the Barbarian was one thing.... Savage Sword of Conan was another.
Put down the Marvel and come over to the Heavy Metal, Epic Illustrated, Creepy, and Vampirella side of the aisle.
LotR is going to be more in line with what you like, the good vs. evil type of story. Conan stories are about individuality, surviving in the face of overwhelming odds, imposing ones will, and adventure for adventure's sake. In his world, there really isn't "good" in the traditional way we usually think of it. Sometimes what Conan does we would call "good" like rescuing someone in need, and sometimes what Conan does is "bad," like stealing. These stories are more about adventure and encountering and overcoming the unknown. Magic in these types of stories is almost always dangerous and corrupting, unlike the more "light" pure good magic of a character like Gandalf, say. So it is a completely different vibe from LotR. It's more similar IMHO to something like Game of Thrones than LotR. And this is probably the greatest swords and sorcery movie ever made, although Beastmaster is quite good too.
Robert E. Howard and H.P. Lovecraft admired each others work and corresponded. At one point, each wrote a story heavily implying something in the story to be an element from the other’s mythos. So Conan is part of the Lovecraftian universe, and vice versa.
Howard came from a much more 'secular' worldview than Tolkien. Tolkien was aware of the deeper reality of a Spiritual World and his Catholic Faith IMplicitly informed his work. If I remember Howard's personal history correctly (Lazily not looking it up), I am fairly sure he was Agnostic, if not outright Atheist. I fear he would fall right in line with our Modern-Postmodern Ideology that 'Good' and 'Evil' are mere Human Invention.
I just rewatched 'Beastmaster' recently. It *IS* surprisingly watchable! (Especially Tanya Roberts. Yowza.) The opening sequence where his faithful Doggo saves his life, then dies, brought a tear to my eye. Especially when Dar carries him to lay with his dead adopted father. Very Touching. The only change I would make would be to give his Dad the honor of taking some slags out before he died. I think the character deserved it.
@@barreloffun10 It is a damn shame that A- Howard self-deleted at 33, sadly it seems he didn't have the strength of will he thought he did. B- That a potentially brilliant collaboration was cut short by that and Lovecraft's untimely passing at 47. C- That neither one got the attention and recognition (Not to mention the profit) they both deserved, until well after their Deaths.
@@torikazuki8701 It was very hard for Howard to make a living publishing in magazines during the Great Depression. Often he was shorted in his pay or a magazine would go out of business and he would get nothing for the stories sold to it. Tolkien had the benefit of stable income from his university positions.
@@barreloffun10 Oh I absolutely agree, Howard, Lovecraft, so many writers of that era and the subsequent 'Amazing Stories' one got screwed over in a number cheap & unfair ways.
What bothers me about the Modern Era, is the laws enabling modern Corporations to have all the rights of real human beings and USE those rights to stranglehold so much of our creative culture. It's infuriating.
Copyright Laws were originally created to protect people and give them the opportunity to benefit from their work, not to give that benefit to those who don't deserve it.
The amount of philosophical undertones you can find in this "schlocky" B-movie if you look for them is staggering. Milius certainly had something to say with this film and made sure to say it.
In the Hyperborian Age, Conan is the wisest man alive. Empathy for enemies is just word-magic those little men use to confuse the strong.
Fun fact: The dogs that attacked Arnold (Conan) were not trained. And literally attacked Arnold and fell into that cave, so there were real wounds. And the producer asked Arnold if he was okay. And Arnold said "Yes i'm okay" and then the producer said "well leave the wounds it's good material for the movie". That totally killed me haha!!
Another fun fact is that Arnold was not allowed to train for 3 full months because otherwise he was too muscular and the sword would no longer fit over his shoulder.
Conan probably has the best opening music to any movie I’ve ever seen
"...and if you do not listen, then to hell with you!" Greatest prayer ever uttered on film, IMO.
Conans sword is called the Atlantean, because he finds it in the tomb of an Atlantean king, and it was forged before the great flood and destruction of Atlantis.

Hi Cami, I'm a little late to this one.😊 I was under the weather yesterday. Sandahl Bergman (Valeria) was known as a babe in the 80s.❤ I'm looking forward to your "Twins" and "Kindergarten Cop" reactions. Cami! Those are both good Arnold comedies.😆 This is definitely one of the earlier films that helped establish Arnold as an action here. There is a sequel "Conan the Destroyer" (1984). While it is generally not considered as good as this film, it is interesting to see the story. Great reactions to your very first Conan film, Cami!!!!🎬👏👏👏👏
girl, you don't know. i fell in love with Conan reading the paperbacks. i'm 50 now, and he is still my favorite fictional character, it is my favorite fictional world. REH was a troubled, lonely man, and i dig his creations. you said you like LOTR. REH was a dark soul, yearning to break free from his rural, overly-mothered home. he was crazy smart and read everything he got his hands on, studied the oil roughnecks and cowboys, tough guys of Texas he grew up around. his world is stark, bare, unforgiving, no room for lies. no idealism.
Raw Deal. The most underrated Arnold movie.
I was a little kid when I saw the animated cartoon show that aired on Saturdays where Conan's parents were simply turned to stone, and his sword sent his enemies to another dimension. I eventually watched this as a slightly older kid with my dad and asked him how Conan's parents died in the movie, and were they turned to stone. Dad tells me, if "turned to stone" means "stone cold dead, then yes, they were stone. Also I never saw his enemies sent to another dimension in this movie, just sent to Hell, after he brutally murdered them
The actor who plays the king was also in " The Exorcist " & also a movie by Stephen King called " Needful Things ". Many more movies though. He's a famous actor .
Max von Sydow. He played Jesus in The Greatest Story Ever Told.
@joebell_WoTfan one of the greatest actors.
Ming the Merciless in Flash Gordon (1980), soundtrack by Queen.
And one of the greatest movies ever set in the Middle Ages - The Seventh Seal - where he plays a knight returning from the Crusades who plays chess with Death.
Conan figures out the Riddle of Steel because of Thulsa Doom. Thulsa Doom teaches him that flesh is stronger that steel because flesh wields the steel. But Conan figures out is is his will that drives his flesh. The Riddle of Steel is that physical steel doesn't matter, it is the steel in your spirit and mind that matters.
Hey Cami!! My favorite people are vigilant against evil after THEIR experience or association with negativity. Characters like Conan or Ben-Hur overcame the evils of slavery because having good in your life requires holding tight to optimism and hope. Nice reaction as always.❤
Very true! I think so much could be done with his character after this film too! Also thanks:)
Conan is a barbarian, not influenced by your modern sensibilities. It is the law of the jungle, tooth and claw, your concepts of good and evil are not what motivates him. So if you're too civilized for a more primal world then the Hyborian Age is not for you. For the rest of us R.E, Howard created a character that does epitomise a more honest portrayal of our baser instincts.
I like the symbolism in his crucifixion resurrection then he killed the serpent. Conan doesn’t become a wise king until later in his life.he is a conqueror at first build his kingdom and killing the monsters of his world but stays in the grey between good and evil.
I'm glad you mentioned Arnold's acting chops, he really is good, and he even does comedy VERY well (playing the straight man, like in True Lies).
Conan The Barbarian has been one of my favorite films since I first saw it back around '84 at the age of 13. From its smart environmental storytelling, brutally believable action, powerfully dangerous villain (who could fight, but his MIND was his most dangerous weapon), the gorgeous cinematography and of course the stellar score by Basil Poledouris, one of the best composers of his generation, RIP, it's a Mastercrafted film, all around.
It is said that great stories only grow with time, as you grow, the story 'grows' with you and you perceive things you did not see before. Having seen this film dozens of times over 40 years, CtB definitely falls into this category. While it is appreciated more now than when it came out (Especially the Soundtrack finally getting the recognition it richly deserves), it is still mostly seen as a 'Cult Classic', instead of the powerful, intelligent film it actually is, able to stand with some of the best films in Hollywood.
As to your thoughts on Good vs Evil, I take it from the little you've said that you DON'T have a modern/Postmodern worldview, where everything is a Social Construct, Personal Feelings create reality and Good and Evil are merely personal preferences. If so, well done, young Lady. As to the DEPICTION of Evil in film, that's always a tightrope. What do you show, how MUCH do you show, to give the audience the understanding that they are seeing something deeply, deeply wrong? I think Conan got closer to the mark than most, and as it came from Hollywood, at least it acknowledges Evil AS Evil, that's especially rare today. But if you want to see a TRULY disturbing picture of Evil, watch 'Rosemary's Baby'. Conan is almost lighthearted by comparison.
One of the things I've always loved about Fantasy, when done right, is that it externalizes the internal struggle, it puts it at a distance, makes the intangible concrete, so that we can better process it. Because the MOST important battle is, and always has been, to fight our own darker natures, and with the Grace of our Maker, be given the Power to stand over them.
Hello. Conan The Barbarian was originally a comic hero. Who saved the women and slew the beasts. He was also very much the loner. He also had a dislike of magic and wizards. He just didn't trust them. The movies did their best to keep that feeling alive.
Interesting tropes of the movie... Thulsa Doom was looking for steel. It was new and stronger than Bronze. That gives a time line..
When Conan discovers the sword in the tomb of the dead King and he cleans the sword by banging it on the ground. The dead kings helmet falls and he bows his head to its new owner. When he leaves with the sword and breaks his chains. He leaves wearing three wolf skins...
Blue flames warn that witches and demons are close
You realise the iron age came before the steel age right?
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 🤔🤔🤔
@@the98themperoroftheholybri33 Yes but iron is brittle...and not good sword material...it smashes like conans fathers...
@@petnzme actually early steel was softer than late iron, there was a gradual switch over as smithing skills with steel became better and better.
It's always the way with new technology, it's not like steel was invented and everyone threw away their iron swords.
But I think Conan's father's sword breaking was representing Conan's sheer force of will to get revenge, Conan had become greater than his father
This movie is such a classic. Watched it for the first time in the mid nineties when it came on the sci-fi channel. Age 11! It's probably what got me interested in medieval stuff and fantasy! 😄
Conan the Barbarian the real "He-Man Origins" and a special thanks to Basil Podelouris for this music, and robocop and starship troopers...
When he says "Thorgrim is besides himself with grief," and you laughingly respond, "he looks it," because he really doesn't. There are two possibilities for this. First the character really didn't care about the snake, or second, a much more plausible one, is that Arnold's bodybuilding buddy, who was cast in that role, because they couldn't get actual actors that were as beefy, couldn't really act. :D
This movie has EPICNESS written all over it, the cinematography, the sets, the costumes, the locations, the practical FX, the fucking AWESOME Poledouris soundtrack... and this girl is just sitting there like watching an episode of Beverly Hills 90210...
in the books, Conan quickly grew wise with experience, most magic users in Conan's world grained their magic powers by selling off their souls, and/or corrupting their bodies. While it took a while before he found one, he did in time find a wizard or two he could trust in the books, he became a very stern, but well loved ruler during his time. I forget when, but shortly before he took the throne, he would find the one woman who would finally be his wife, and had a son with her, who would eventually take the throne when Conan finally decided he had enough.
"These guys suck." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
I'd bet Cami would love the movie Excalibur if she's never seen it.
While other kids were reading the weenie Hobbit books I was reading the Robert E. Howard Conan books. It later was turned into a comic book. Yes, Conan is part of the Marvel universe.
Anyone who calls Tolkien a weenie is a fucking idiot. Howard didn't fight in the Somme. And his "fantasy" is a child's attempt compared to the legendarium. Tolkien. Is. Fantasy. Howard. Is. Overrated.
Arnold actually bit a real vulture in that scene. It was dead already (before filming), but it was real.
This is an amazing movie..i fell in love with it when i was about 6 ....seeing that sword being made and that music start, what a feeling.....and 34 yrs later my niece's at 4 to 13 yrs old all enjoy this movie as well.😊
Fun fact camels are hella resilient to the heat and cold when properly nourished. with good reason the scorching heat of the desert gets up to 130 and down to -3.9 degrees and that's the average.
The very last frame with a future Conan sitting on his throne as king "with a troubled brow" is so important because it signifies and represents the point of him gaining a kingdom by his own hand but, that expression of disillusionment that he had gained all of the accolades and a kingdom, but couldn't ever have the one thing he truly longed for which was Valeria. The riddle of steel....Conan could never have EVERYTHING he desired, something had to be sacrificed. For him it was love. Once he chose the path of the sword, it set his life up on a course of serving something greater than himself and greater than his own desires.
No comment on the incredible score to this film??? One of the best ever!
I listen to the soundtrack from time to time.
First time watching your channel. I like your style. Subscribed. Liked. Good luck and all the best with the channel.
Conan may have become mainstream popular in the 70s due to Marvel comics. But originally in the 1930s it was for young urban male adults (20 to 30) who wanted adventure and meaning in life.
Underneath Conan's adventure are philosophies in life. The meaning of life. False religion and Riddle of steal. Conan's father believed you could trust steel. But in the end, he died by the sword. Thulsa Doom (the false religion) believed it's flesh. In the end, Conan cuts his head and shows his blind followers Thulsa Doom is only human.
Before he was killed Thulsa Doom asked Conan what would your life be once you (Conan) accomplished your vengeful mission. This is his final attempt to convert Conan. This in turn causes Conan to pause and think. Conan still kills Thulsa Doom to fulfill his vendetta. But Conan later wonders for a while what is his future. What is the meaning of his life now that his vengeful adventure is complete. In the end, the Riddle of Steel is the will to Survive. As the movie tagline says THIEF, WARRIOR, GLADIATOR, KING
There is another subtle philosophy -- Valeria"s (the blond warrior/thief). She offered her life to bring back Conan from the dead. In the end, she lived forever as a Valkyrie.
At the end, Conan wasn't "falling for it". Thulsa Doom was trying to to use the same hypnotic power he used on Conan's mother (as well as most of his followers) to sway him to his side. It was the last card he could play given that a 300 pound killing machine was there to end him as brutally as possible. It was then that Conan remembered his father's words -- "For no one - no one in this world can you trust. Not men, not women, not beasts. [Points to his sword] *This* you can trust." Then he lopped off Doom's head with that very same sword
This movie is a man maker
There are more Conan movies. "Conan the Destroyer" and "Red Sonja".
Red Sonia is NOT a Conan movie.
Red Sonia is a female warrior and even though Arnold is in the movie, he is not playing Conan.
Red Sonia was also created by Robert E. Howard
Fun fact, the "Wheel of Pain" thing that Conan pushes actually became a strong man event a few years ago.
This movie is a chef d'oeuvre, very rare special effects, so realistic, with a damn photography, a damn scenario, a damn casting, Oliver Stone is a co-scenarsit, the music by Basil Poledouris, all is great.
Keith David has a great, powerful voice too.
I was 10yrs old when I saw this in the theater. 🤗
This movie is so much stranger than people expect.
@kellymoses8566 Yes there are layers and everyone can see /understand it to the extent of their outlook on life and mindset.
SUBBED! I got almost 3 minutes in and decided.
What an incredibly pleasant personality!
Working on getting our TWINS reaction from Cami
Aw thank you!! This made me smile!
One of Schwarzenegger's first roles was in a comedy called The Villain. As a hint, his character's actual name is Handsome Stranger. It has a ton of talent in what amounts to a blend of Western and Looney Toons. It can be tough to find, but worth it.
And I would also recommend that sequel to this movie which is called Conan the destroyer, and it's from the year 1984.
Darth Vader AND Ming the merciless (19:21) both in this flick.
Conan was a man of great mirth and great melancholy, a heavy drinker, a carouser. he was not a white knight.
Cami
Thulsa Doom's (James Earl Jones) henchmen are Arnold's bodybuilding buddies from his bodybuilding days.
Cami
Arnold during his press junket for his memoir stated he hired vocal coach hopefully minimize his Austrian Accent in order to get movie roles.
Great reaction ❤
Popcorn Roulette, There is a little known horror flick that wasn't really scary, but more of a drama that Arnie did, whereas he played the father of a teenage girl that gets bitten by a zombie. Who knew Arnold Schwarzenegger could play a serious dramatic role, instead of just an action role? The pacing is a bit slow, but Arnold is impressive in an actor's role. Unfortunately, nobody saw it. LOL The movie is called "Maggie". However, "Conan the Barbarian" and the first two Terminator movies are his most iconic films. There is a sequel to Conan, but it is too comic bookish. Author Robert E. Howard's original stories were sexy and gory adult action fantasies and Arnold's "Conan the Barbarian" was very close to Howard's first Conan story. The soundtrack by Basil Polidouris was mind-blowing, too!
25:30 "Oh, that's Arnold. Is that the guy running up to him laughing like that, cuz that would be interesting." Nice, Cami. You gave that scene a whole new vibe.
😂😂😂😂 laughing so much about this! Thanks Bruce :)
Have you seen the Arnold in the 1993 movie Last Action Hero. There is another Conan movie, Conan the Destroyer. It has several big name actors Grace Jones, Sarah Douglas, Olivia D'Abo, and Wilt Chamberlin.
This and Excalibur set the standard for Sword & Sorcery/fantasy films until the LOTR trilogy. This and the subsequent entries are based on the Robert E. Howard novels of the same name. More Arnold Schwarzenegger films to watch are Hercules in New York, Pumping Iron, Red Heat, Last Action Hero and Eraser
Great reaction! Hope you give the sequel a shot!
Dragonslayer is a fun Disney sword and sorcery movie from the early 80's
I always wondered if Thulsa Dooms answer to the riddle of steel is the correct one that Krom would accept. Or if Thulsa Doom was giving him a bad answer.
It wasn’t his father’s sword that he found in the cave. One of Doom’s followers took it when they ransacked his village. The sword he found is called the “Atlantean” I believe.
He actually breaks his father's sword in the battle with Thulsa's henchman. And uses it to behead the villainous cult leader later.

Total Recall is also a really fun/weird 90s Arnie space movie. It introduced Kuatos and the ridiculous disguise head.
Conan ISN’T supposed to be wise. Hes a BARBARIAN. Its not about light against dark, its about dark against darker.
Amazing that three of the most influential movies (especially for copies of their themes in film and other media) were released so close together: Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981), Conan The Barbarian (1982), and The Terminator (1984), and Arnold was in two of them.
In the days of "High Adventure" there was good vs. evil, only evil and what ever it took to survive.good was a luxury most people could not afford.
Good reaction Popcorn! Please do the other Conan movie too,Conan the destroyer..
