The Hopeless Game You Need To Play

  • Nothing seems easier, clearer, and more obvious than choosing who to vote for. We’ve done it for thousands of years across cultures ranging from Ancient Greek city-states to tribal democracies in the Americas. And now that we’re about to elect a President of CZcams, it’s time to look at how complex seemingly-simple decision theory can really be.
    When you decide whether to dive head first into the Whang! Gang or sign your life over to the The Cult of Pebbles, you’re going through a process that involves multiple behavioral paradoxes, quirks of game theory, and… even the same sort of problem when you and your friends try to figure out where to eat.
    The deeper you go into the analysis, the harder it becomes. You can focus too much on trivial things. You can invent differences that might not even be there. You can get wrapped up in outside emotion and ignore what’s right in front of you… yet you emerge confident that you know exactly what you want for yourself and everyone else.
    In a way, it’s a hopeless game we have to play. But we get a little smarter and a little better every time.
    Thanks to Whang! and psychicpebbles for their selfless commitment to public service as we all endeavor to improve our great CZcams Nation:

    'Be selfish when making decisions', got it

    • @SiMeGamer
      @SiMeGamer Před 3 lety +21

      Not saying you didn't mean it positively, but just in case, here's a little breakdown of what selfishness means in the context of decision making. If your family is very important to you and you want them to enjoy themselves more than whatever other alternatives you have, then it would be selfish to facilitate their enjoyment. Selfishness is a very misunderstood concept that is usually applied wrongly(?) in cases of egomania. Helping others is selfish more often than not. Being a teacher or donating to a charity is usually done because you value what you do. Not because you a ethically obligated. That's what teachers are. They are selfish. They teach others because they love doing that. I personally love teaching and have been a tutor many times without pay because I simply wanted to and found it extremely fun. People don't help others because they believe in the idea of helping others being the right ethical choice (most of the time). Helping others selflessly is idiotic because it has no rational referent in reality. It's an ethically fallacious decision because altruism as a leading ethic (sadly the leading ethic in most of the world) is fundamentally fallacious. It has no basis outside of faith (why is sacrificing values for others' sake the right choice? The answer is always "because it is" and not because there is an actual reason - there isn't). Always be rationally selfish. Always do what you value the most. If it's to play a video game or help a friend in need, ultimately the best choice is the selfish one. The one you value the most. And if you value your friends, helping them would usually take precedent and you will be extremely happy with your choice because the value gained is greater than the one from the video game. Sometimes it's the opposite. Introspect and refer back to past decisions to be able to make choices faster and see if they were indeed the right ones.
      As for the video, it deals with indecisions usually lead by perfectionist mindsets. If there is no clear cut choice and it would take too long to make a decision, just flip a coin or go with what's good enough. Read "The Paradox of Choice" for more on that topic. Great book that will help you a ton if you are a perfectionist or deal in pretty much any avenue - especially business of consumer goods and services.
      So go out there and be rationally selfish. It will take you far and make you happier than ever :]

      @@SiMeGamer I believe the answer is not infact "because it is" but actually "because it maximises the happiness of those involved at large" you can look at the abilene paradox being a factor for a couple of reasons, either dishonesty or ignorance. They are either being dishonest for not answering what they truthfully want to do or they are being ignorant for assuming that they know the others want to go. Besides if they truly valued making others happy going because you made the assumption that everyone one wanted to go and youre making them happy by going would make you happy therefore everyone would be truly happy about going because everybody is making everybody happy and that's what they value.
      If each of them said "I don't want to go but I'll would like everyone else to be happy so I'll go if everyone wants to and be happy about it" then they wouldn't go. If you are selfish when considering your own wants but selfless about the final choice then that would maximise the overall happiness.
