How I made a one sheet plywood boat

- This is how I made a small one sheet plywood boat.
This is not a complicated build. Only requires a few tools and is limited to one sheet of construction plywood, screws and silicone. The boat is constructed from four parts. Three sides and a bottom.
If you want some more details check out the instructable here : www.instructables.com/id/One-...
The plywood sheet costs around 20$, the screws 3$ and the wetroom silicone around 7$. Total cost around 30$. It's not really "seaworthy" but a fun little boat for the kids (and maybe someone that is a bit smaller than me). :-)
The build took a couple of hours. I had no plan building this, so I made it up as I went along.
This was a fun build and our kids loves to use the boat. I built this last summer, so there is both old and new footage. It has allready survived one summer (and winter). I'm planning on doing some upgrades to it for better comfort and stability. I will return with another video about that (maybe). :-)
A better boat would be created by two sheets of plywood. Maybe I will try that next time too.
Thanks for watching!

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for!! Something cheap and still nicely done so I can make my son a "pirate ship"!! Excited to try it out, thank you!
And thank you! Glad to be able to inspire with my little project. :-) This would make a great pirate ship with a few modifications! :-)
Come join our Facebook page "mini boats and more" ...
We have numerous boats to inspire you and we are all diy type people....
Dad built one of these from plans in a Popular Mechanics magazine in the 60's. It is still usuable.
Sorry for late reply! Thanks for watching and so cool your dads boat still works. Nice to have a boat with a history. :-) Thanks again and take care!
This was really really good, mainly because it's within reach of everyone!
Me and my dad are wanting to build a simple boat and take it out on a lake just for fun. We don't have any experience, but this definitely helps us with our project, simplicity matters.
This is a great one piece of plywood boat, a great one to start with. But for a super simple boat that is more useful, check out the Puddle Duck Racer. It keeps it simple, cheap, but also uses glue to join the pieces, which I think is better than silicone. More sheets of plywood, but thinner. Don't get scared off by the sail, as you don't have to make a sail, you can row or paddle it. Nice part is, the sail can be added later. Note: I have yet to build a boat myself.
@@bsheldon2000 Thanks I'll definitely look into that. Everything you just said is what we want.
Thanks! Good info! I didn't know about that one! 👍
Awesome job the best one sheet plywood boat I have seen yet. Thank you for sharing.
And thank you for the kind words! :-) I really appreciate that!
Very impressed my friend, I would not have thought about that.
Thanks my friend! Need to look into making something like this in pallets. :-) That may take some more time, but would be super cool! All the best tot you! :-)
Great work on the boat well done 👏😊👍
Thank you so much! U know I appreciate it immensely! :-)
Awesome project!
Thank you so much my friend!
Ahoy there captain - that is brilliant. so much fun!
Haha. Thanks matey! Nothing I'm sailing around and pirates in. But next time maybe! :-) Sail on, sail on!
So cute,nice idea. 👏
Very cool! Thanks for posting!
Well done awesome work👍
Cute and good for all seasons
Thank you very much! I really appreciate your support!
Looks amazing, great work! I’m going to be attempting to make a table out of a wood slab in a couple weeks I’ll have to see if you have some videos to help😁
Thank you very much!
That sounds like a very interesting project. With your talent I look forward watching that! Thanks again and all the best to you!
That is very well done 🙂
awesome build man great project! I m sure you will have great time with your boat! 👍
Thank you so much my good friend! I really enjoyd building this aswell as using it. Thanks again!! :-)
That was wonderful❤
Super awesome my friend!!😊
Nice one, love the innovation 👍🏻
Thank you so much! You know I appreciate it alot! :-)
Awesome and fun! Just hit the red button. Nice editing!
Thank you very much for your kind words! Much appreciated. Yes, this was just a fun thing to make. Happy that you liked it too. Following you too, so hopefully we will be in contact again :-)
excellent... cool project! 👍
Haha. Thank you so much my friend! :-)
Great little boat!
Thank you my friend! Haha. It's really small, but it was a fun build.
Thanks for the stickers buddy! I will feature them in an upcoming video. :-) Take care!
Glad to hear that they got to you in one piece! Looking forward for that video.
Awesome boat! Great video
Thank you so much my friend! :-) You know I appreciate it!
And if the boat fails it can be turned into a coffin ! I like how you cut the series of kerfs to make it flexible, actually just saw that trick on a finish carpentry channel for trim molding.
haha. A build that keeps on giving. :-) Thanks for watching and commenting!
I can't believe it floats! Nice work! Looks like you're an expert at rowing haha
Haha. Thank you very much! :-) I cant really paddle or row, but against the wind I had to learn quick or I had been on an unplanned expedition. :-)
Nice project! It was very relaxing to see you work outdoor
Muchas gracias! Thank you my friend! One should really work more outdoors if one have the possibility to do so. Your comment will be a reminder for me to do so. :-)
Thanks again! :-)
Mikhandmaker interesting points ,if anyone else needs to find out about boat plans and kits australia try Joolaim Rudder Replication (search on google ) ? Ive heard some super things about it and my mate got cool results with it.
Maybe you could take a motor from a weed-whacker and make a mini outboard motor haha
Great idea !
Merci beaucoup! Thanks for your kind support! :-)
Nice. Good work.
Thank you kindly! I really appreciate that! 😊👍
Rub a dub dub.
Or is it rub a dub bub. lol
Awesome!! It works! You have such a beautiful landscape! Now you need to build a motor out of wood! Loved it!
Haha. Thanks Rob! This was a fun build, and now I'm looking forward to make some improvements. Then it wont be a single sheet plywood boat anymore, but I will have a more practical boat. :-)
Hmm... a motor you say...
:-) All the best to you my friend!
G’day mate, didn’t know you had a channel till now, great build from one sheet of plywood 🔨🔨👍👍👍
Haha. G'day to you and absolutly no worries mate :-) Glad you "found me" and thanks! - hope seeing you soon again!
Take care my friend! :-)
Cool boat!
Thank you very much for that buddy! :-)
Ha this had me cracking up. Also loved that you did it all outside with a bunch of lithium ion tools.
Haha. I appreciate that buddy! I have the technology... I can rebuild this (Just with a few lithium ion tools haha). All the best to you and thanks for watching!
I have spent months studying building boats and discovered a fantastic resource at Denelle Boat Builder (google it if you are interested)
I built one just like this one, BUT, I used 2 sheets. I made a 4 foot wide boat, and 15 inches deep. I like having a bit more distance between me and the water coming in, if any at all comes in. And it gives a bit more weight carrying ability.
Awesome! If I would build another boat, I would use two sheets like you for sure. :-) Makes more sense and would be more usuable. Thanks for sharing and watching! Take care!
great video sir!!!
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate that! :-)
nice works !!!
Thank you so much!! 😊
Very ambitious project for a single sheet of plywood, but hey, it worked! Very nicely done!
Thank you so much Nick! :-) I appreciate your support immensely - you know it!
That turned out great my friend :) I love that it doubles up as a sled :D ॐ
Thank you so much my friend! I had a lot of fun building this and a lot of fun trying not to sink it in the lake. :-)
Cool project👌
Thank you very much! I really appreciate it!
Love the ending with you in it lol. That would be ideal to tow your gear behind your boat. especially when it's to build a duck blind
haha. Thanks Frank! I had a fun time there. 😀 Ooh! nice thinking! paint in a darker color and have as a tow and a blind. Thanks again - much appreciated!
Amazing! 😃👊
Thank you so very much! I really appreciate it, you know it!

Thank you so much Bruce! U know I appreciate it a lot coming from you! :-)
Great build video buddy never seen it done before looks good though
Thank you so much my friend! :-) It was a strange and fun build :-)
I have a friend who built a bathtub for his cabin the same way.
haha. thats brilliant! works "boat" ways I guess ;-)
Glad I found u !!
Thank you very kindly!!
Cool! I might build one!
Hey there! Sorry for my late reply - thank you very much and good luck with you build! Please share the result :-)
@@dekeros-recreationalwoodwo6456 thanks!
Looks great! What's the length? I would put some method of stabilization on it.
Thank you! the length is about 170 cm. And yeah, I am planning on making some improvements. :-)
Great work, I assume that the lake was nice and warm? ;)
Haha. It sure was. I had to try to sink it, and that was not too hard at all actually. :-) But I have made some improvements and I will build a bigger next time. It was a nice and fun build!
Thanks for watching and commenting buddy! Really appreciate it, u know it! :-)
I like the curved bow idea,, think it needs a bit more length tho,,
Cute little Pram you made there. You may be able to paddle it better if you knelt in it like you would a canoe.
Thanks a lot! Yes, I did that off-camera later. Added a sitting board, after I located the balance too. Thanks for your comment and for watching!
I’m trying that
man i wish i was that good mine looks like two pieces of wood nailed to each other
I'm going to make one
Nice
Thank you so much Nikos! Really appreciate it! :-)
What is a counter sink if ya dont mind me askin
How had it held up?
So weird.. I built my daughter a sled and I've been looking at small boat vids while thinking of making it into a boat. I see that you went the opposite direction 😂
That's fascinating! What are those large sheets of wood called and where did you get them? I've never seen sheets of wood that big before.
Hi! Construction plywood sheets. Used to build inner walls in houses (among other things). I get them from different stores. :-)
Wow that's amazing! What kind of caulking?
Thanks my friend! I used silicone (for bathrooms and such). It's still holdig up after almost 3 years now. :-)
What plywood do you recommend or would you just go for marine plywood
Cool
Bhaut acha

hi me from indonesia, very interested in your work, may i know the length, width, height of your boat
Hello! Thank you! And yes of course! :-) There is some more information here on how I built it : www.instructables.com/id/One-Sheet-Plywood-Boat/ and this picture shows the cut list : cdn.instructables.com/FFU/MBTL/JJEK0TYD/FFUMBTLJJEK0TYD.LARGE.jpg
how much need glassfiber row. and resin if covered this plywood glassfiber ???
Hello! thanks for watching and for your question. I have no numbers on that, but if you are doing that, please consider making a larger build than mine. Its too small, and if u are putting more money in it with glassfiber, you would be happier if you used two sheets of ply. 😊
would make a good ice fishing sled
agreed. with a couple of ropes in the front it would be easy to drag around on the ice/snow. Thanks for watching!
HI Nice little build, but I don't think adults should use it unless they are little people or jockeys. You said on your site you used drywall screws - were they deck screws, as regular drywall screws will rust. Also was that a marine plywood. if not I think I'd have to put a lot of waterproof paint on it. Over all good job!
Thanks for watching and commenting! I really appreciate it! Totally agree with you - this is more like an unsafe toy. :-) But it "works" and holds water. :-) It was not marine plywood, only cheap construction ply. I have had this 2 seasons. Oils it with linseed oil 3 times. The screws hasnt rusted yet. I covered the with silicone, but that is true... they should have rusted anyways... I wonder if this was galvanized screws... hmm... Big thanks again! :-)
I'm disabled and because of that I'm only 4ft and 90 pounds, so I think a small boat this size or maybe a little bigger will be perfect for me. I want to build one just like this, can you give me the measurements of this boat build or just a rough estimate? Height, Length, and the max width at the back of boat from side to side, and shortest width from side to side at the front, plz? Also what thickness and type of plywood did you use? Idk what thickness or type I'll need, but I do plan on reinforcing my build with one layer of fiberglass that I'll be wrapping the whole outside of the boat and reinforcing the weak points with. I'm also gonna add a bench style seat in the front and back, with built in storage compartments, underneath the seats, im gonna also add a cupholder, a few rod holders, and im gonna add a collapsible sun shade, that ill be able to attach too using two small PVC Tubes that im gonna place on each corner at the back of the boat, having the tubes going from the bottom of the boat to maybe sticking flush with the edge of the wall of the boat that will make the sun shade be able to be attached add detachable quickly and easily, placing like 1" tube in the boat that has 3/4" tube inside the 1" and if those 2 together arent tall enough I'll add another piece that's smaller than the 3/4" inside the 3/4" that can be pulled up and locked in place so it's like telescopic, then I'll have the sun shade I can attach to the PVC. I'll make the sun shade itself to where it can be easily folded up compactly so that way I can always have the sun shade with me on the boat inside one of the storage compartments I built on the boat. I'm also going to add outdoor carpet over the bench style seat I'm gonna build.
Hi! thanks for watching and commenting! I was also thinking of adding fiberglass to protect it, but I will save that for my next build. I think your project is very ambitious. But the best part of making a boat like this, is that you can build and add things later as you go. The first step is to make the vessel. If I were to build this again, I would make use of two sheets of plywood. I have a small cutlist in my instructable (in metric, hope that is OK?). See if this will help in any way. Would love to hear back from you if you build it! www.instructables.com/id/One-Sheet-Plywood-Boat/
Good luck - and sail safe! 😊⚓
@@dekeros-recreationalwoodwo6456 thx it helped alot. Question, why would you use two streets of plywood if you had to make it over again? I saw in your article you mentioned you would make it wider to be more stable, and mentioned decreasing sides from 30-25cm instead, is that to save on plywood or for a diff reason? Could I make it wider without decreasing the sides?would that be better? What type of silicone did you use one reply said marine calk would be better what do u think about that idea? Also could you make a video on how you made your cutting guide, would love to see a tutorial on that! Also what did you mean by because you would have made it bigger or?? And what did you mean when you said "I would place some runners underneath the bottom, making the boat go more straight in the water" what are runners? And should I add them? Also im curious to know, Do you have any ideas or recommendations on how I might could upgrade my build? Also, I don't have a workshop or garage to build in I imagine the project will take me about a week of working part time here and their, do you think if I left the build outside it would cause any problems? I wouldn't do any of the fiberglass work in the rain or if it was gonna rain soon, but do you think I'd be ok if I left the project outside covered by a tarp or do u think humidity or possibly bugs, or idk anything else might could possibly damage it? I'm also going to be building a small boat trailer, and in the future I might make a small pontoon boat using plastic 55 gallon drums as the floating mechanism. And I'll deff keep you updated once I start the project, which will prolly be in the next month or two.
@@maddog7795 Hi! Sorry for my late reply. I hope I will answer all your questions :-) Let me know otherwise.
If I used 2 sheets I could make it just a little bigger. More stable and more safe. You are correct - by making the sides from 30 to 25 I would have about 2 inches more space.
The boat still holds water (after 2 years), and I used wet room silicone (used in showers or bathrooms) . Seems to be working. Marine silicone would work nice too I guess.
I think you should add "runnners". Just strips of wood that will keep your boat more straight in the water. I saw a couple of other build that added two strips (about 1 inch wide and a 1/2 inch thick) along the flat bottom of the build. Works almost like a keel.
I don't know if you are near any water. But you might need to test the boat several time to get the balance right. Where to put your sitting plank and your mounts for oars (if you build it a little bigger that is).
I dont think there would be any problem building it outside and leave it there during the build. Good luck again! :-) (and I might consider making a video of the guide for the circular saw). :-) Cheers!
What is the background music?
How did you treat the wood for it not to rot
Hi! thanks for your question! I have treated it with linseed oil (each season). And i dont keep it in the water (I pick it up after every use). Seems to work - at least for two seasons now. Thanks for watching and commenting! :-)
would be so easy to put a sail on it!
Great idea! :-)
to not make a cut in the center you could build some leeboards and for the rudder( to make it easier) you could just use a paddle and steer it with the hands. and for the sail an optimist sail and mast combo is easy to find or you could very easily build one yourself with a shower courtain! btw i love the idea of a single sheet plywood boat, you made me want to build one!
Dang, it's almost like stitch and glue, only with Silicone. It might work better with a double ended Kayak style paddle.
Hey thanks for that! 😊👍 Good idea - I'll try with another paddle next time. Cheers!
Nice one.! Is it marine ply or basic ply?
Big thanks! It's actually just basic construction ply. :-)
Hey, please specify dimensions of it - LxWxH. Best regards from Poland!
Hi! have you checked out the instructable that has a link in the description? Maybe you could find the info you are looking for there.
Kul projekt!
Is that 5/8 plywood?
is this common ply? did not spoil in the water?
Hi! thanks for watching and for your question. Yes, it's common construction ply. Treated with wood oil and stored on land. Still works! 😊👍

Ha! Double season boat/sled
Haha. Thanks my friend! Not pretty, but functional! I might put in something to accept a rope/handle, so I can use the sled to fetch firewood during the snowy winter times. This project keeps on giving! :-) Thanks again! :-)
Yeah, probably you can use some epoxy resin to give it a smooth finish or fiber glass for a supper duty one... you can put wheel.. a motor... umbrella.. so much potential there hehe :)
Haha. Great ideas! I might add some of these on my list to do my friend! :-)
haha awesome build! When's the fish fry?
Haha. I dont dare to pull up some fishes (no extra weight just yet). Need to make this just a tad more stable first. But then maybe... :-) All the best to you my friend! Thanks a bunch!
Haha yea you in the boat seemed a bit precarious!
haha. lol. Yes it was a bit of a challange. I would warmly recommend a two sheet plywood boat. :-)
Ya know, maybe you should move to two sheets and a bit wider w/ a centerboard
Hi! thanks for watching and your comment! I would love to make another one larger and better - maybe in the future I might make one :-) This was just an experiment with one sheet. Thanks again!
One Sheet Plywood Boat by dekeros - Instructables - I asked a question in your video. If it is possible please answer me.
haha awesome video, as always! But you should have worn your cowboy hat instead of that "keps" :)
Haha. Thanks "brother"! I was not trusting this build enough to have the nice hat. ;-)
Music stops at 3:00
What's the name of math rock artist?
Yes - I know. I had some great music to this before. But when view counts went up I was not able to use the music due to license issue. Therefore I had to pick one of the CZcamss free tunes. Not happy about it, but that was the easiet solution at the time.
