Using only a chain block and some ropes. I roll, flip and slide the 400kg / 880 pound water tank into position.

On many jobs it's the worrying how to do it right that takes more time than actually doing it.
Oh, no... a chain winch :) I've been installing 4 Bushman tanks, and have been using a $60 4WD type winch with 1.5m cable. They work for a bit, but they are made of cheap laminated parts that bend. Also, it's hard to get the cable back out of them. FYI, Bushmans can deliver tanks off their trucks either rolled off the back, or pushed off the side, onto the base. Delivered on side is probably better since it kills less lawn, and you can move it around. Flipping them onto the base is easy with a winch and a log, and maybe a steel bar pegged in front of it with the strap anchored to it. Get a 20m 4WD strap as well, and a 5m hook one. You can spin them on their base, by winching from one side. It might be more of a challenge to get them up on their side using a winch. I haven't done that one.

Good point. The total weight will be distributed over the "footprint" of the tank, and not focused at one point. Water being something like 8.3 pounds per gallon, 5000 gallons is about 42,000 pounds, including tank weight, around 20 tons. Not a small amount of load! A tall narrow tank will have more pounds per square inch than a low squat tank, and tanks are not always "flat" on the bottom, some are dished, and their shape changes with the load. I read an engineering white paper, quite a while ago, most of which was beyond me, but I did remember being impressed with their calculation of bottom loadings, and it was not linear at all - most of the load was around the outer edges, if I remember correctly. Another trick my neighbour came up with was to use a bit of used, and free, carpet under layment as padding underneath. The stuff was commercial grade, about 1/2 inch thick, and made from some sort of synthetic material, which, although unsightly, never seems to rot! He cut, levelled and compacted a hillside location, but the soil was rocky, so he put a carpet "pad" underneath. Another 'official install guide' suggested 30 lb roofing felt in several layers under the tank base, cut into doughnut shapes of various and descending sizes, with most of the layering on the outer edge, and only one layer, or none, at the centre. Although it's true, Poly Tanks can be welded/mended, me thinks it better to avoid future problems whenever practicable...
Richard Freeberg the carpet idea is a good one, now to empty the full tank and find some old carpet!!!
The edge would be slightly higher because of the curve and stiffness of it. This is my reserve tank or overflow, so it's not super critical, unless we get a 5 year drought, which has happened.
Carpet is a great idea, another material might be Styrofoam though I have not tried it on this scale.

Thanks for the video, we have a 25000lt tank arriving in approx 2 weeks - delivery only to the gate. We were wondering how the hell to get it up the very long driveway and past the shipping containers, and in to position. Gotta drag ours over some gap100 rock before it goes on its base. Not looking forward to the arrival and prep, however we get droughts here in the Far North of New Zealand so every water tank is worth its weight in gold. We have a good size trailer so seeing you have your tank tipped on to your trailer is an inspiration, Cheers mate 👍
Hi Libby, yes it’s totally doable, you’ll notice that trailer was quite old and really bottomed out when the tank hit it it’s now dead but not because of the tank landing on it. Yes you’re 100% right about storing water in drought areas I just wish I could get my veggie patch to stay alive but that’s more my fault than the weather’s.

I did mine (same size tank ) Using a few lengths of pipe underneath the tank. Egyptian style. A few blocks of timber and a bar to get it up and then slide the pipe under. Nice

Well done! I have to install a new tank and this was inspiring. Although it was "only" 880 lbs, perhaps it would have been wise to have someone around to spot you, or just in case you needed assistance? That and the tank bed preparation? Looks like a bare cut and leveled bed without any fill or compacting. These tanks are pretty tough but 5 tons of water pressure on a small pointed rock underneath could be trouble. And that water pressure is not evenly distributed over the bottom area of the tank. Just thinking...
Richard Freeberg I hear you, and I made pretty sure to get any sharp rocks out from under the tank. They aren't that hard to re-weld if it ever does puncture, more like 20 tones total weight! 5000 Galon = 22,000 litres.
***** Actually the weight of any point in the bottom would be the same so the pressure would be about .43 lbs * the height of the water per sq, inch.
Ken shane that is assuming theoretical conditions, that is never the case in real life. Your calculation is wrong too, it's more like 2.4lbs per square inch. (22tones over 20,105sq inches.)
2 trees and 1 come along attached to my truck equals 20 minutes and it's in place.
It would be nice if I could get my 4x4 in there, but it was 60m away.

Raising a 3000 litre tank onto a stand which is 10 feet (approx 3 metres) from the ground is not so easy.

This is a great help - I need to install one of these up a hill - knowing what to show my friends is extremely helpful. I like the way you start this, stop and restart the action....but then maybe not many people are facing this type of task?
