That is a lot for a tool in my opinion but it’s not my tool…I think the ones from dollar tree are just as good but hey that’s why I got smart and found this video! I guess you did too smarty.

excellent, tried to fix mine. rolled the spring up really good and glued it in as it had come off the spindle. put it all back together and quickly realised I had wound the spring up the wrong way and the tape measure springs out. tried to "undo" my brainwave glueing effort and snapped the spindle and the sping shot out in a nice big birds nest. Excellent to see you fixed yours.

Don’t feel bad I’ve had that happen to my name as well as far as the spring popping out into a gnarly mess.

I find that this is a really good example of how garage door torsion springs work. You want there to be just enough tension on that spring where it just moves the tape back into the unit consistently. The spring shouldn't be so tightly wound that the tape violently lashes around when it retracts, and the spring shouldn't be so weak that it can't pull back in the tape. Just the right amount of force.

Thank you for the video. I had a brand new 35ft Husky tape measure I bought as a set a few years ago. It didn't even retract with help. It's been sitting in my toolbox since new and I just never got around to taking it back. Now it's discontinued so I figured I see if someone made a video on taking one apart. Yours was close enough so I took it apart and was able to reattach the spring to the post. Now it works.

Any of you needing to do this, pay attention to which way the spring is winding when you are doing it, and see how he's doing it if you can't get it the first time, I had to rewatch to get it in all honesty

Thanks. My dad's, that probably dates to the '60s, jammed hard. I had tried monkeying with it in the past but had always been a little reticent to start prying. I wasn't able to get it working--feels like there's a kink in the tape such that I hadn't even been able to force it back in--but at least this memento now takes up 2" instead of 82".
