The flight show at Cologne Zoo is one of the many highlights of the zoo in the cathedral city. You can admire different species of birds that are impressively presented in flight. We talked to the animal keeper Jens Krause and he explains the peculiarities of this educational presentation of the bird world.
Jens Krause and his colleagues relying 100% on the voluntary participation of the animals: the animals fly how they want and are reinforced. They learn different behaviors to educate about their biology to as many people as possible. No matter if they patricipate or not, they always get enough to eat.
What you may know differently from many bird shows is that the animals do not fly with jesses after the training phase at Cologne Zoo. You can see well in the video that they fly without jesses in the flight show. To feed them optimally, the animals are weighed. So you know the right amount of food, so they always stay healthy and vital.
In nature, birds fly when they are hungry and when they make prey, they literally fill their bellies because they are under such immense pressure: they don't know when they find food for the next time. They are caught in the constant struggle for survival.
In human care, they are freed from this pressure. They know they get enough food every day to stay healthy and vital. Simply giving them food would not cognitively enrich them. That's why there is this training offer for the animals and the visitors are allowed to watch and learn something about these fascinating animals - a real win-win situation for everyone involved.
