Keith Cooper is great. I have been following him for years. He gives great, unbiased, reviews and practical advise. His knowledge of printing is unequaled in my opinion. If you are doing architectural photography (as I do for a hobby) his website and book are a must have. I had often wondered if Scott knew Keith as both are in Leicester. Great chat Scott!

Great fun seeing Leicester's leading photographers on a 90 minute video. Learned a lot about both of you and how you run your businesses. I miss my old TSE 45mm tilt shift. It wasn't wide enough enough but the images were very high quality.

Been watching @keithcooper on his channel, always thought he was in his 60s or 70s. These awesome cameras and angle on this channel made me realize he's probably only in his late 40s or 50s. Nice! More years of cooper wisdom in my future than I expected!
Scott, Keith, i think your experience tethering the Fuji is maybe due to your Mac's? I tether my GFX 100S every shoot to my Windows 10/11 laptop (Asus G65 with RTX GPU) or main windows workstation, simply put in the cable and it works perfectly. I use 2x Tethertools cables for 10meter in total; into CaptureOne. Maybe an idea for Keith to do the test with different equipment for the tethering? ;-)

Great video. It shows that even with commercial photographers, there are many possible ways of doing it, but also the importance of diversifying income streams.

I had a photographer, who is far and above me tell me one time that in my new tiny little business if I were to provide not just the small business individual attention but big Studio workflow then that would be a winning formula. I was too young to understand at the time but this makes me think that might be true

Oh wow, this is a massively interesting podcast episode! At my work for an engineering company I am sometimes asked to do some photographs, both of our facilities and of our products. So this conversation you had was such a relevant episode with regards to expanding my knowledge in this regard.
I am for sure going to have to give Coopers book a look. I am still unsure if I want to go with a tilt/shift lens or if I wanna get the cambo system (I don't know if there is a great book on how to use that one).
My intuition tells me that the cambo will give me more flexibility for what I can do, but might be more work to being out on the field, if I want it on site (for work) or if I want to do nature photography work in my spare time.

I’m also an engineer that does in-house photography for my employer! I use Canon TS-E lenses and a Fuji GFX 50s (original one).
For table top or product work where you are reasonably close to the subject, you might run out of movements with a tilt shift lens. However, that happens on a surprisingly small percent of shots for me. And, because I’m shooting tethered with such excellent kit, I can use Capture One’s keystone correctly while shooting to nail down the look I want using a combination of movements and software.
I’d love a Cambo Actus MV; however, it costs as much as the TS-E 50 and TS-E 90 L combined (if you buy everything new) without any lenses. I know the older Mamiya lenses are less expensive, but the break even point is probably around 3-4 focal lengths. Additionally, the camera on the back of the Actus will affect what lenses are compatible and how much movement you will get. If you want wide angle movements on a GFX, a Canon TS-E 24 II or Fuji TS 30 are the best options. My understanding is that because of the flange on mirrorless bodies wide angle with an Actus is not ideal. (Check out getdpi for better info!). If you want focal lengths above 60 mm then I think there are a lot more options. Obviously, a digital back wouldn’t have these considerations, but those are much more expensive too.
Anyways, all of that is to say that both options produce excellent results, and each make a different set of trade offs. I like having EXIF data, not needing to do LUTs, and the plug and play aspect of the TS lenses. However, I still dream about the extra movements on a Cambo.
@@gracesonaufderheide4743 Cheers mate that's some really useful advice! The reason I really heavily considered the actus is the fact that is is easier to be super deliberate with the adjustments. I tend to be too quick working (read too careless), so I would benefit from a setup that forces me to focus on each single shot. Additionally, the ability to tune the plane of focus with the actus is super exciting to me.
Currently I am rocking the humble canon RP. However, with the talk about them maybe forcing people to pay for some features on a subscription model makes me want to consider going elsewhere (if this is the case). Because of this, the actus is fairly compelling because it can be modified to adopt the fgx (if I wanted to go for the actus g).
Thanks for the suggestion for further reading! I have chatted with a cambo sales support, they didn't mention flange distance as an issue for the actus model. They did however mention that being an issue if I were to buy one of their retiered view camera models and modify it to adopt a RF body for instance. One thing is for sure, I would want to be able to use a really wide lens on the system, as I often experience issues with getting everything in my shot when on-site (container-sized objects are frequently crammed in sub-optimal places for photographing.
Luckily it is not a piece of kit I need to get asap, so I will have time to look around, potentially find a store that has the kit so I can actually handle it and feel what it is like using in real life. Again, thank you for the awesome comment and input! it is much appreciated!

Next time you have to shoot for your company, I’d recommend asking them to pay for renting one or two Canon TS-E lenses (17, 24 II, 50, 90 L, or 135) and the correct adapter for the RP. It probably won’t cost very much, and I wouldn’t be surprised if the manual focus and the tilting and shifting bright some of that intentionality you are seeking. Another thing that would help slow your shooting style down a bit would be to shoot tethered through Capture One (assuming it is a more studio styled shoot). If you haven’t done either of those yet, then I think you will see some nice changes in your workflow before jumping to an Actus.
Oh, and besides all that, I’ve found that the biggest improvements I’ve made in my own work are all related to lighting. So, if you haven’t opened that box yet that can be another fun adventure!
@@gracesonaufderheide4743 Yeah I did get myself a couple of SK400-IIV godox lights, a little underpowered, but for my home studio work they work well enough for now, and I didn't really want to commit a hefty portion of money on stronger lighting (the second hand market in my country is... not that developed for studio lights). And I noticed a MASSIVE change in my image quality.
In respect to renting, that is a good shout, though I might have two issues with that: 1) renting kit within my country is fairly limited and quite expensive, so I don't know how easy it is to find 'older' kit for rent (in terms of lenses), I for sure have to give it a go though. 2) My boss doesn't really care at all about image quality and what is possible with certain kit. He thinks that with my 24-70+70-200 f/2.8 I can do anything that we would need, and depending on who you ask I suppose we can get functional images for the majority of what we need images for. being in a small company with less that 20 people working also constraints how much my boss would be willing to spent on photos.
Hopefully over time I can get them to realise that sometimes we need specialised equipment for the sort of images we want.
TLDR: I will for sure have a gander if it is possible to find a renting service for those lenses just to get a feel for the work flow those give, maybe I love it or maybe it is too fiddily.
A great podcast, I've just ordered Keith's book, and I've been considering buying a tilt-shift lens as I'd like to do more photography like yours. Would a 90mm be ok or would I be better with a different focal length, please?
Thanks - depends on the sorts of photography. The 90 is one I use more for product/studio work, whilst a 24 is much more for landscape/architecture

Nice video, conversation. Kept me awake while ill in bed. No comment on the content level, or your tools either. As you reference others commenting on your microphones, I don't have a problem with that. There is one thing in the audio, though: the audio from both microphones seemed to have been placed in the middle of the stereo "sound stage". Consequently, in a context where soundstage is audible, both your voices seem to come from the same point in space.
It was not annoying though.
The flange distance would only be a problem if the original camera was something like a mirrorless so no idea why they made that claim. That's why you can't modify a Sony E lens to a Fujifilm the flange distance is too close.
Shame on Fuji for not fixing these bugs in updates, not least for such expensive cameras. My 2021 100s has bugs, sigh.
