  • Thanks to the beads made of blown glass, the traditional folk bonnet from Ábelová is one of the most jewelled up ones I have ever seen. Maybe that's why the folk costume from Ábelová became the centre of attention of house robbers followed by their selling in various bazaars. Even today, you can buy all folk costume parts, whatever you think of, original, imitations or fakes. People don't know what folk costumes to wear and often they mix folk costume parts thinking they bought something authentic from a given village.
I, myself, have never bought a folk costume or a part of it. It feels like wearing someone else's clothing, that belongs to that concrete village. I would feel like I'm proud of someone else's succes. Many times, women from these villages complain that they are missing many parts of a folk costume but they don't have enough money to buy them back. That is why, please, next time you want to buy a folk costume in a bazaar, if someone pretends they just found these sleeves and this folk bonnet in the attic, be careful. It is possible you're not only supporting the black market but you're depriving folklore groups and local museums of the possibility to preserve an original folk costume in the village of origin and you unintentionally support the rise of prices of folk costume parts to numbers that local enthusiasts can't afford to pay for.
But back to this jewelled up beauty from Ábelová. Last time, a beaded folk bonnet with pearls was made in the 50s directly in the village of Ábelová. Janka Čerepová, who helped me remake the hairstyle from Ábelová after 65 years, is the only one who gave back this beauty to the village and recreated the folk bonnet which we used in the video using the original technique. Janka, her sister and her mother started embroidery and thus continue the tradition, so this unforgettable folk costume could come to life again in the present and so the next generations could admire the beautiful folk costume from Ábelová. I contributed a little in my way by documenting the traditional folk bonnet.
