- How do you portray one of the defining writers of a generation? Jason Segel does just that in the eagerly awaited Sundance hit The End of the Tour. Based on Rolling Stone journalist David Lipsky’s bestseller Although of Course You End Up Becoming Yourself, the film follows Wallace and Lipsky (Jesse Eisenberg) on an intense five-day book tour for the classic Infinite Jest. Segel discusses how he tackled the role of a lifetime with Rolling Stone's David Fear. Recorded July 27, 2015 at 92nd Street Y.

Segel should have won an Oscar for his performance in this film.
should def have got nominated.
Colin Morris if David Foster Wallace had been a rockstar, he would.
you can tell how much it meant to him, he does seem to have taken away a lot from studying DFW and playing him in the movie
The movie and his portrayal I underrated just like DFW himself
He should have for sure. He was increadible.
Jason Segel has impressed me a lot with this. He seems to get it! I hope he can hold onto it.
Jason Segel's laughter is so pure. Also, I never realized how much a good interviewer can bring out the best. Cheers to Jason, his counterpart and the wonderful ideologies expressed in this. good stuff!!
indeed props to interviewer. gave him space to elaborate and asked intriguing questions. near the end i even thought to wonder what he himself (the interviewer) might ask DFW if he could ask one question, because it seemed like he would've jumped in and given one or two to think about it, if Segel had volleyed the question back to him. then again maybe i read into it too much, that moment (of segel's deft dodge of the "what question" question) heh
Connected, well spoken, thoughtful and thought-provoking. What a refreshing and endearing interview that reveals that Jason Segel is growing and maturing as both a man and an actor. Bravo Jason! Can't wait to see what he tackles next!
This is great, such a likeable guy
AirBallers31 nice ought cover art
Awesome interview. Best 47.23 minutes spent on CZcams.
I agree 💯
totally!
i dont know of a better person they could've picked to embody DFW. and he is clearly grateful and appreciative of him too.
This guy is brilliant.
Yes, he is. ❤
this is an excellent interview, jason segel is really very clever and there is definitely some essence of DFW in the way that he answers the questions, with a matter-of-fact-ness and some nervousness that people won't see things in the same clarity that he does
love this take
Wow all his thoughts is brilliant.. What a impressing man.
Such a great guy. Some really thought-proving answers from Jason, and perfect questions from the interviewer. So excited for this movie to come to the UK.
Great interview, so insightful and inspiring. Jason Segel is wonderfully complex and honest person.
Love this guy, loved his comedies and always knew he could do more serious roles. Keen to see his future
This movie made me cry like a little bitch. That scene at the end with the dancing FUCK
That was a brilliant touch. Such a terrific movie.
such a dope interview
This was awesome lol I'm 336 pages in about to the end of the game of eschaton. So descriptive and funny man.
Emotional awareness may be the most important quality found in a person.
Surprisingly enough, I loved the movie.
This was awesome.
such a nice guy!
Cool interview 👍🏻
Jason did a fantastic job with the part
I didnt think he could do it, but this role has indeed surpassed his performance in The Muppet Movie (even though only be a little)
Was not aware of this. I like it.
I like to think the story about the healthy town, the hill, and the bike is really a metaphor for what's really worthwhile in life. That it is so easy to go downhill, but ultimately empty. That actually the old man is really wisdom, that the climb is the point and that the gears represent change, and finding the thing that's difficult enough for you as a person to make the climb enough of a struggle to be worthwhile, but yet possible for you. All the while knowing that it's pointless comparing your bike to someone elses.
Part of Jason Segal has become David Foster Wallace. Similar to Jim Carrey and Andy Kaufman.
It might appear that way but what it really is it's that diving into David Foster Wallace's books forces us to introspect much deeper than we would ever do it on our own. We dive into it, we feel it and then the Ego gradually dissolves and gives room for truth and being who we really are which is being creative and in tune with cosmic humor.
Somebody drilled a hole down into davids coffin his wraith was released and now he controls Json Segels body.
fantastic interview and fantastic ending
Haven't finished watching the interview, but you can tell that he has done his reading and understood dfw. A lot of what he discusses is mirrored in the book the end of the tour is based on, and in DFW's other works. I think the movie portrays DFW in a bit shitty light (the whole subplot with betsy has no basis in "although of course you end up becoming yourself", the book the movie is based on), but Segel did an excellent job nonetheless.
I like how genius ends up a discussion in front of an audience waiting to applaud and laugh at everything.
Jason has some serious external rotation on his right leg going on
Isn't he adorable!
Later this interview, but absolutely it was Oscar worthy.
They could have not picked a better actor to portray DFW.
DFW changes everyone who gives him 20 pages of their time.
Wow
Jason Segel sounds so different in this interview.
Jason Segel actually reminds me of David Lynch.
David quote: 18:19
I've battled lifelong depression and something I have always said and felt is "I was born suicidal."
17:00
This movie struck me as more romantic than Romance movies
Did my man’s say he was 72 years old ?
Uggghhhh
is he 72?
He's good but not funny
Played Wallace like he was the guy who slept on the couch in a bandana. People want to exhume Wallace so badly that anything that purports to resemble him is to be worshipped. The portrayal was insulting to Wallace's memory and who Wallace actually was.
Who was he really? I didnt know David Foster Wallace, but I have read his works. The shyness and honesty in Segal's portrayal seemed fair and not over exaggerated.
If you’ve listened to Wallace’s radio interviews and read anything by the man, Segel did a damn good job of getting the mannerisms
Im waiting for your scene by scene rendition of Wallace
