  • Exclusively Colorized Western starring John Wayne: The Man from Utah - In a horse-riding rodeo contest bad guys want John Weston to lose. When he doesn't go along they add some insurance: a poisoned needle just under his saddle.
    The Man from Utah (1934)
    Director: Robert N. Bradbury
    Writer: Lindsley Parsons
Stars: John Wayne, Polly Ann Young, Anita Campillo
    Genre: Western
    Country: USA
    Language: English
    Also Known As: Rodeo
Filming Location: Alabama Hills, Lone Pine, California, USA
    Storyline:
The Marshal sends John Weston to a rodeo to see if he can find out who is killing the rodeo riders who are about to win the prize money. Barton has organized the rodeo and plans to leave with all the prize money put up by the townspeople. When it appears that Weston will beat Barton's rider, he has his men prepare the same fate for him that befell the other riders.
    Reviews:
"Marshal George Higgins appoints John Weston a deputy after the latter helps save the Wells Fargo office from being robbed. Higgins wants Weston to use his riding skills to enter the rodeo and prevent a gang from having the contests fixed and some of the riders killed before they win the prize money. Weston notices that Barton, a promoter in town, is the head of the crime ring and takes heed before he can enter the final races. Barton also has another sideline, robbing Carter's bank of the gate receipts following his attempted "snake bite" treatment for Weston. Very good Lone Star film for Wayne being one of Bradbury's better directorial and writing efforts. Considering Canutt was one of the riders in the rodeo, it would have been nice to see some actual riding shots instead of the stock footage. Nice interaction between Wayne and Young (she was quite fickle). The climactic fight between Wayne and Peil was a bit of a letdown, but the rest of the film was able to make up for it. Rating, based on B westerns, 7." Written by Mike-764 on IMDb.com
"Suspenseful Gabby, Yak and Duke undercover movie with an action packed beginning. Then he gets hired by the Judge (Lafe McKee) to seek out the gang spiking the rodeo. His gorgeous daughter (Polly Ann Young) has her eyes on Duke in more ways than one. Marshal Gabby Hayes, saved by Wayne in the opening has put all his trust in him. Canutt as always is superb on both sides of the screen. Earl Dwire, although not in a major role did well as the rodeo announcer. Can Spike Barton (Edward Peil Sr). keep the scam going? See beautiful Anita Campillo in an interesting scene luring Duke away from Young and into a deadly trap." Written by frank4122 on IMDb.com

I love old westerns. They all have two things in common. One, there will be clouds of dust anytime horses or cattle are running. Two, the horses never get tired even though they are running most of the time. How could I not love these oldies?

This cowboy is apparently a fast talker; he's a stranger to her one day and getting married to her the next day. 😂

It's was all about budget sadly most western movies were low budget therefore had to save money anywhere they could

The worse singing I have ever heard! I know the movies required singing but this could be cut out and the movie would be a 5+ rating.with the singing I would have to give it a 4. I truly love his early movies but the singing makes me cringe!

Love these old movies low budget as they were. My question is that really John Wayne singing or a voice over.

It was the 1930s. The depression was on. Japan was eyeing the Pacific islands and Germany was eyeing Poland. We were about to enter world war two. Do you notice there are few fat people in these films. A lot of people weren't eating regular. Also there was no 'fast food' to fatten them up. I'm saying this to those of you watching from the year 2022.

Mark, this is only my tiny opinion, but back in earlier Hollywood days, they CHOSE thin folks for positions in movies. Exactly like they chose “ beautiful…..thin “ ladies to be stewardesses on airplanes. No men, not a pound of extra weight, no eyeglasses, and beauty personified. And look at things in today’s world. Although in today’s world, things have gone overboard, at LEAST everyone didn’t cry
themselves to sleep every night , because they didn’t look like Barbie’s walking around. And the men…….well, as far as the airline industry, you and I both have seen THOSE results ! And, thinking about Hollywood, weights are more normal, but the men……well, sadly, just look at them. Just listen to them. However, I completely understand your point, Mark.

He didn't. I don't know whose voice it is, bit Wayne is not singing or playing. Note the wide angle, so you can't see his hands, and the voice sounds nothing like Wayne.

Two things you can always predict in these old movies...
The good girl is gonna marry the hero.
The bad girl (if there is one) is gonna turn good.
    Good entertainment. Thanks for uploading.
And btw, I always rate John Wayne movies and Tim McCoy movies a "10" on IMDB as I think these old westerns get short shrift on the voting.

Uncredited rolls by two actors who were lead supporting regulars in these old B westerns of the 30's - Lafe McKee as the Justice of the Peace and the versatile Earl Dwire as the rodeo announcer.

Of course any John Wayne movies a great movie. But as a man versed in public address systems...
One guy with a megaphone? You need about 50 of them to reach most of that crowd of thousands.
But mostly, the stock footage used for the crowds in the bleachers, somebody missed the fact that the footage shows PA horns mounted on the structure.
Another little known and not too interesting fact... Exactly 9 months after the Roswell cover up, Al Gore was born.
