I was 5. I stole two candy bars from the TG&Y. My mom found them and she dragged me back there, had me take the candy in. I had to talk to the manager, give it back, apologize, and my mom had me sweep their floor (and it was a big store) to "pay for" the time the candy was out of the store. While I was doing that, they had an officer come out and talk to me about stealing. This was 1962, and I guarantee you I never, ever took another thing. And I did the same with my kids. I had that same talk about "if it doesn't involve, doctors, hospitals, ambulances, police or police cars, lawyers, or more money than I have in the bank, you MIGHT be able to do it. But fool around, get arrested, I will leave you there until you find a way to work off the bail money." Years later, I heard the kids telling my grandkids basically that same discussion.
If we had a justice system that valued the victims more than those who do the crimes, maybe things would be a lot better. And if parents actually, uh, parented their kids, things would be better.

So true, my daughter was 5 or 6 and went to the neighborhood store with her "friend" I got a call from the owner of the store telling me that my daughter stole a candy bar, I marched her right back to the store (the owner explained to me he watched the whole thing. Her friend told her to grab 2 candy bars which she did, and then told my daughter to wait outside. She paid for a soda and walked out to join my daughter. When they got to my home, I got the call. So I made my daughter apologize for stealing this candy bar and then I told her she had a choice, she could get a spanking and be grounded for a week OR she could never play with this "friend" again. She chose to not play with her friend and she never again stole ANYTHING! In fact, she wanted to become a lawyer, then met her first boyfriend and changed her mind.

I am from a newer generation born in 1998... I was punished as a kid. Anytime I did wrong I would either get grounded, things taken away for a short period of time(Seemed like an eternity to me as a 5-10 year old) And at worst I would get spanked. Did I turn out alright? Yes, not once have I stolen or did anything way out of line. Not enough parents in this world willing to actually parent. Im not saying beat your kid sensless. But letting them get away with things is getting out of control.

Likely more liable or such. Someone suing the company for being hurt, even if it was because they were stealing, costs more (and more pain in the butt) than just about anything they could steal. Now the company can say, "I told you not to do that!" and just work losses into their budget.

Then they attempted to run out of the store with it. My coworker said “ They stealing you gotta stop them” I said no way I don’t get paid to do that and I’m not gonna get hurt “ he decided to run and grab the cart so now they fighting for the cart full of goods. The LP guy isn’t around and it’s crazy. The other guy goes in his pocket and runs up to the guys. Then stand my coworker. My coworker lets go and they run off with the cart. Only to get caught down the street by police. The cart had an air conditioner, a knife set, clothes, cleaning supplies, food and one of those sofa beds in a box. So my coworker is hospitalized and you know what Walmart does? Ladies and gentlemen they fire him while he’s in hospital. He was lucky to be alive and now has a job at Home Depot. So we calmly got back into the car and went right back to the store. She had to apologize to the clerk for stealing, pay for the gum (which she didn't have money for so I reminded her that this is coming out of the family grocery budget), and give the clerk the opened pack of gum back. Everyone who saw this in the store was very greatful for how I handled it. I told the clerk to either throw it away or give it to a kid who came in next. I remember reading Starship Troopers (the original Novel)
And honestly, the authors take on punishment is very apt
Paraphrasing but, basically Ricos father is talking about the past, how teens and youths would go around being hooligans, and the system would barely give them a slap on the wrist, but the moment those kids then turned 18, they could have been imprisoned or put to death, and comments how insane it is that kids and teens who commit crimes are punished a little more severely to really drive home the idea of consequences before they reach an age where they are more liable for dire consequences
(A part of his philosophy that the misbehaviors of an individual are always at fault of the authority that raises them. This being a tangent off of where a private got court maritaled for striking his drill instructor, but the instructor demanded he be demoted for letting the private hit him and being in a position where the private was liable)
