My wife and I want to visit Iceland, going on your tourist topic. I was raised better than to “be a tourist” when I traveled with my parents. It’s so much better to visit small places and get to know the locals and their culture, and not impose our culture while visiting. I’ve heard the horror stories of people going to Iceland and invading peoples privacy, being loud, rude, etc. We’d fly into Reykjavík and rent a car and head east. Don’t speak much Icelandic but I’m hoping Norwegian can at least help us get by, since I’ve heard Icelanders can somewhat understand what Norwegians are trying to say

Tourists should not destroy places, true! But blocking off places is definitely a bad solution. It should be possible for everyone to enjoy the nature.
I do know that it is hard to check who destroys things, but limiting access is not the solution.
In e.g. the US, their stupid permit system sometimes makes it impossible for visitors to see places if they're not living there and can go at any time. Nature should be a place for everybody (which was why US national parks were developed in the beginning...) and definitely NOT any kind of lottery!

As a German from Bavaria i get questions like "oh why don't you wear Lederhosen " " don't you listen to German folk music" "how is it to live in a country most of the others hate because of WW2" and omg, tons of Nazi jokes... some people you just met a few hours ago go right in it because they think all of them are funny. No matter what country and generation, 100 years ago or today. These stereotypes will survive us all :) I think most of these people are just really clumsy and socially awkward and don't really mean it in a bad way. But I get it, sometimes it's a bit frustrating.

I live here for more than 2 years and what I like and dislike about Iceland is:
    - the thing which I hate about Iceland the most is that HORRIBLE WEATHER!
    - on the other side I like people. They are very nice, relaxed, chilled, not stressing , they dont understimate the others (in my experiences) and always behave to others with respect (even they are in different positions). For example in my country are people many times very angry and rude to other without reason. because they can be. For example in bank to customers, doctors and nurses to patients, teachers to students, at all kinds of offices, etc.. Because they think they are something "more" than others or what, (because they know about situation more). Then people have low self confidence and understimets themselves which is sad :/
In iceland everybody everywhere was very kind to me..in bank, at school, at work (bosses acting like friends :o), at all offices Ive been to, which was very surprising for me. But thats how everybody should behave! we are all equals, nobody is "better" or "worse"! That Iceland taught me and Im thankful for it..

You have 4 cases in Icelandic, in Polish we have 7 and SO many languages have even more. I strongly believe it's common in every language to have troubles with grammar or spelling (for natives I mean). Half of population in Poland mistake the conjugation or declension of words, and don't know if it should be "powiedziałby" or "powiedział by" (first is correct) or "dziewczynom" instead of "dziewczyną" (correctness depends on the case but some people don't know it). So Icelanders aren't special and alone in that problem.

I'm a single parent who tries to travel with their kids as much as possible, but we have yet to travel outside of the USA because flights are expensive. Thank you for sharing the sad, but true reality of your country and so many others. It disgusts me that people can't be more considerate when travelling. I might not understand entirely the rules that I'm reading, but try to follow them to the best of my ability and def won't leave trash or disrespect people. It seems like common sense to me, but am truly sorry some can be so disrespectful. I think you're one of the lucky ones to live in such an amazing country and can hike or see the most diverse landscape on a day to day basis!
