  • Cary Grant teams with director Alfred Hitchcock for the fourth and final time in the superlative espionage caper, North by Northwest, judged as one of the American Film Institute's Top 100 American Films and recipient of three Academy Award nominations. Grant stars as an innocent man mistaken for a spy in one of Hitchcock's greatest thrillers. While leaving New York's Plaza Hotel, advertising executive Roger Thornhill (Grant) has the misfortune of standing just as the name "George Kaplan" is paged -- starting a lethal case of mistaken identity and a nonstop game of cat and mouse as he is pursued across North America by espionage agents trying to kill him... and by police who suspect him of murder.Pursued by spy (James Mason) and counterspy (Eva Marie Saint), Thornhill is variously abducted, framed for murder, chased and in another signature set piece, crop-dusted. He also holds on for dear life from the facial features of the Presidents on Mount Rushmore. It all adds up to another box-office smash from the Master of Suspense.

    0:54 "You don't find a tasteful little murder on every guided tour, do you?"
    Gotta love classic Hitchcock's nonchalance while presenting horrible deaths.

    Alfred Hitchcock is the g.o.a.t and his trailers still hold up just like his films. It is a crime the popular and good young movie channels like Jeremy Jahns and Chris Stuckman do not review every film this man did to educate the younger generations coming up.

    Una de las mejores películas de Alfred Hitchcock es una réplica de Los 39 Escalones en los años 30s.

    1959 what a year for movies, if it wasn't for Ben Hur which is a great film, North by Northwest would have won Best Picture of 1959!!!!!

      @@scottmiller6495 he and Kubrick were both simply ahead of their time,in 1954 Rear Window should have Dominated the Oscar as it is in most people’s opinion better than on the waterfront,same goes for vertigo in 1958,north by northwest in 1959 and psycho in 1960 but his films we’re always thought of as unclassy and taboo Gimmicks at the time by Hollywood ,today 50-70years later they are more remembered than all of the movies that won over them in Oscar
      And that says a lot

      @@scottmiller6495 good opinion but in 1954 I personally think Rear window was a better film than On the Waterfront ,but that’s just my opinion if u like on the waterfront more it’s also cool cause it’s definitely a great movie(a classic too),but I still think Hitchcock should’ve won at least 3 Oscars for best director because all 4 of these movies are not only superbly acclaimed by critics but also by fans and have stood the test of time

    • @Luschan
      @Luschan Před 2 lety +5

      It's one of those stories where a character is wrapped up in circumstances beyond his control, and he barely scrapes by every step of the way because he's just a regular guy. Because of this, you're able to relate to him, and think about how you'd feel and take action if you were suddenly a fugitive wrapped up in a conspiracy.
      It also basically invented the action adventure movie, it's like James Bond or Indiana Jones if they were an average Joe. It's also similar to Die Hard in that way. But it came before those movies, so the impact is lessened a bit for the modern viewer. Back then, this had never really been done before so it was a fresh concept.
      It's got some flaws, and in my opinion drags a bit at points. If you're not invested in the characters or primary romance, those scenes can be a bit dull. But it's incredibly well shot and composed, has some crazy impressive set pieces, and is one of those movies that basically invented a genre and had huge impact.

      It was cheaper, but also it meant he could show blood without worrying so much about censorship. Also, it just looks great! Horror movies are always creepier in black and white.
