The Departed - Shipping up to boston (intro scene)

- This is the scene near the beginning where Cpt. Queenan (Martin Sheen) and Staff Sgt. Dignam (Mark Wahlberk) talk to Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) about going undercover to build a case against Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson).
The song is Shipping up to boston by the Dropkick Murphies - Zábava
*Martin Scorcese approaching Leonardo DiCaprio about casting him in a new movie*
"Do it again......for me."
LMFAO great movie. Best comment.
FOR THE KILLERS OF THE FLOWER MOON. UPCOMING MOVIE DIRECTED BY MARTIN SCORSESE AND STARRING LEONARDO DICAPRIO AND ROBERT DE NIRO.
I would have used that for when Marty was trying to get Joe Pesci back in the game for "The Irishman"
Cut to leo doing pull ups
the title is shown here because both "rats" are now in place. this is where the movie really begins.
Mind = blown
They're Good Rats.
Hopefully someone got that.
Yeah. Or rather "departed" to their places.
Leo's character is clearly not in place. It still takes a while before Costello allows him into the loop.
Love it like a prologue
Gotta love how Shipping Up To Boston plays softly in the background before exploding into the prison montage. Dammit does Scorsese knows how to use music in his movies
TheNicestJerk I’m not dissing Scorsese, but that’s such a mediocre thing to compliment him for. The way it’s faded in is really just standard. Maybe if Shipping up to Boston had a more lowkey intro which was played on the downlow throughout the briefing scene (bonus points if its coming from a diegetic source, like a radio in the office), only to be ramped up right at the scene change, it’d be more commendable, but seeing as the song only starts 7 seconds before the change, it doesn’t really seem overly impressive. I’ll give you that having the song start, then suddenly boosting the audio jars the audience, which corresponds to the sudden change from Office to Prison, but since the audience has already been told that’s where Damon’s character is going, there isn’t much of a visual surprise to go along with it.
Also how it takes 20 mins into the film to finally get the movie title
@@chrisoniceskates Damon's character?? You mean DiCaprio's? Are you telling me you don't know the difference between Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio? Oh boy.
@@ryangreene2159
A simple mistake. No one cares.

You cared enough to respond.
I loved that scene. They were giving him shit as a test to see how he'd handle it. Both Queenan and Dignam knew he was very smart, so smart he could fool Boston thugs and Costello himself. They wouldn't waste those smarts.
+MrKajithecat Wicked Smaht

Fackin wicked smaht
I think that what they liked about how smart he was is that they thought (rightfully so) that it would endear him to Costello, who was also very well educated and might see Costigan as a possible protoge. They knew he'd be a great undercover because he grew up having to play pretend ghetto thug every weekend at his father's house growing up, despite spending most of his childhood living in a nice neighborhood at his mother's house.
Boston accent is hilarious lol
Also might be the latest title card of any movie I've ever seen. I don't think this scene happens until 10-15 minutes into the movie.
The title card appears on minute 17 in the movie so... yeah it's late
Chris M. It's one hell of a prologue that's for sure
Eternal Sunshine of Spotless Mind also has titles show up after 15 minutes.
Amazing opening it has
What about Christopher Nolan films? The title card comes after the movie 😋
I know I'm late but just wanted to add on Gangs of NY the title comes at the end of the movie....
For all of Leo's films, this one was the hardest to see him get killed. He was almost a biblical figure in this movie, from tough childhood to young man whos mom, and only family he loves dies. He sacrifices everything for his mission and he has decided to nail the rat, no matter what it takes. In the end he is going to kill Sullivan cause he
knows that he plans getting rid of him too. And most importantly Billy wants to avenge death of Sheens character, which Billy kinda thought as father figurish kinda... Then he gets killed and the goodness of Billys character shows on the actions of two people who knew his strugle best: shrink and Dignam. Shrink wont even talk or acknowledge Sullivan, she hates him so much. Dignam murders Sullivan and wants him to see that who kills him. And the third person who knew Billy the best, Sheens character, rather died than gave Billy up.
Why did they kill him off hes a good actor?
Mad Max 1056 The Road Warrior Why would the fact that he's a good actor make any difference? They killed him off because that's what was in the script.
Aptly summarized..Billy Costigen is such a lovable character..i can't describe in words how well written that character is..His death was truly heartbreaking..
Leo should've gotten an Oscar for this movie. This is one of his top 5 performances.
joonas lehtonen
I disagree with the assertion that Billy intended to kill Sullivan ...in the rooftop scene before his death we see Billy acknowledge that killing Sullivan woulda been too good for him bcuz of the “bagpipes” and parade that goes with honoring a fallen officer. Billy wanted to arrest Sullivan - hence the line: “I could give a f*ck if the charges don’t stick - I’m still arresting you”
Also - in the elevator Sullivan tearfully asks Billy to “just f*ckin kill” him and Billy responds by saying that “he is” killing him - acknowledging that exposing Sullivan for what he was made it just as bad as ending his life
This intro was what got me into the movie.
Since the first time I saw it, I've loved it.
Epic film, right there.
This is a great movie. Seen it MANY times. Good music to.
I'm a sucker for this intro. The movie moves VERY fast in the beginning, but then that song kicks in and you know that the chess pieces have been set on the board. One of my favorite movies of all time. It's a twice a year watch for me.
The title drop is so hard man fucking love this movie
Two things, one - Leo's subtle reaction when the guy says "no offence" is gold.
Two - notice how our view is obstructed in that shot, right up to the moment he says "Sean Costigan" - and pow, it becomes clear. It's the moment Billy starts to see his way into the business.
Hell yeah. His reaction was basically “you don’t know the half of it.”
And then he sign in some paperwork jail but symbolicaly his contract for the underworld. Scorcese is a master.
Ahh never thought about that. Nice!
" GET RID OF THE FUCKING TAIL!! "
Notice how when the camera pans past Sullivan, there is an "X" taped on the window that lands on him. Scorcese was marking him for death early on.
Yea but there are a ton of xs on costigan when he's in jail
@@Jdmxrtinez also applies to him too
Classic Goodfellas. Every film that he directs is a piece of art.
Long live Martin Scorsese. Thumbs up if you agree
Guess what you're right !
Agree with the part that every scorsese film is special or great....but this film is completly diferent to goodfellas
Well Michael Swaim from early CZcams channel Cracked now working on a podcast called Small Beans .. doesn’t like Scorsese .. something about it’s too much macho bullsh*t or something like that he didn’t like about Scorsese movies or something like that..

Taxi Driver was the first Scorsese's film I watched. It was truly great. The Departed was the second one for me. It had one of the greatest endings
The song I'm Shipping Up to Boston rocks for The Departed movie.
I just love how Scorsese does things. The song starts softly while DiCaprio is with the Police chief and then gets loud when he's in prison and then just stops when DiCaprio meets his aunt. The whole sequence is so cool.
Truly one of the greatest films I’ve ever seen
Jail time. That's the beauty of the setup. He goes FULL undercover. They can't conceal that he was a cop so they convict him of a crime. It stays in his records, he does the full jail time so nothing looks suspicious and doesn't look like a setup. He also has to see a shrink after doing time. Everything like Cpt. Queenan explains, the whole nine yards.
That's also why he doesn't get paid as regular cops but gets a bonus. He's basically selling them his life.
He probably only spent a few months in jail if he was put on probation and court ordered to see a shrink.
I LOST MY LEG!
as a bostonian i can say this movie depicts our area and people pretty well compared to most movies. helps having locals like mark wahlberg and matt damon too
Leo working out in prison reminds me so much of Deniro doing the same in Cape Fear!
toby099 must be a scorsese thing haha
*Music cuts midway "billy"? I laugh everytime
Genius directing by Marty as always.
Love this movie! Just caught it again over the weekend. Leo is amazing (his best role, I think), as well as my favorites Damon and Wahlberg. I still gasp at the last five minutes of this movie, no matter how many times I see it.
They could not have chosen a more suitable song for such a powerful intro scene
Django Unchained: he deserves an oscar.
been looking for this for a while, thanks mate
One of the top 5 best movies of all time
My favourite
Top 10 Anime Openings
The shot with him and the black prisoner is epic!
He served 4 months. Talk about strength.
Love that editing
Absolutely. Such a genius.
Brilliant editing!!!
Love the cold stop to the music at 1:56. Scorcese has mastered that. Doesn't do the cliche fade-out.
That Simpsons Departed episode got me into this movie - best Simpsons episode I've seen in a long time.
I like how at 1:10 the "X" foreshadowed Sullivan's death, perfectly timed to look like a target on his back, even though as you watch the film he LITERALLY makes it all the way to the end and it has you thinking he *WON'T* die, but you're rewarded at the very end when he does
Some films. And this sequence, into the totally raucous song, the look on Leonardo's face right as it segues. Scorcese is like a gut punch sometimes. Primal stuff.
I love how you broke this down...very cool,
Best hard cut in a soundtrack ever. "Billy?" Silence.
I wish there were even MORE to the Departed because I just enjoyed watching the interaction between the characters. I wish there were even another hour to the movie.....really, really, very well done, but the credit does go to the original version (which was called Internal Affairs" and was entirely a Hong Kong cast and production, The Scorsese/Monahan version is truly hands down.
One of my favorite intros ever. Cannot get the shirtless Leo image out of my head!
Yep!
I just realized something this is the opening of the movie just like the way he opened up mean Streets it only took me like 15 years to figure that out
two sequence and its music was brilliant in this movie!!
1.this one
2.when decaprio sees tht citizen letter in mattdamon's office table!!
grt direction really deserved an oscar!!
His cousin is none other than the elusive Kevin Corrigan who has been in a ton of films like Goodfellas and Superbad
I've just watched it for like the third time or something and it's getting better and better, all the details and stuff are now crawling on the surface....Scorsese is a genius....he does it all by the book, combining different angles,shots,color..always putting some symbolic objects to link the scenes. it always ends up so new and interesting although it's by the book :)...and Thelma did a great, great job editing it..just love it!
Love the old lady smoking while having an oxygen tube 🤣🤣🤣
Leonardo DiCaprio should’ve been nominated for this movie, instead of Blood Diamond. In my opinion, this is his best acting performance.
Movie of the decade!
BEST SCENE IN THE MOVIE! ❤ SHIPPING UP TO BOSTON 💯👊💯
Leo, Matt & Mark in the same movie..gotta love that! #THEDEPARTED 😍😍😍
How many lead acting roles do directors need to hand Leo before he wins an oscar?
Until the guys at the Academy Awards get some sense into their heads
+Cameron French I said the same for Scorsese.
He did it :D
Well he won so congrats guys. I never really understood what the big deal was. He's one of if not THE most respected actor at the moment and of his generation. A 6 inch tall trophy wouldn't make a difference to me.
He at-the-fuckin-least deserved a fuckin nomination for this.
I love this film
The badass opening movie credit. All of it cause of the soundtrack
fucking badass scene!
Best intro ever
Amazing scene!
The part from 0:43 to 1:27 is just so truly awesome. I was strung out on heroin and bathsalt back in like 2010 and watched this late one night and that part inspired me to clean up my act and start working out again and eating more and I did and I got jacked too. Still am. Movies can inspire us greatly.
good shit 👍
such a great movie
Oh yes, I like that as well...I was just commenting on that scene earlier..it was short and effective and it spoke a sentence in one movement, NOW that is excellent acting ability
Shipping up to Boston
this movie was awesome
I love how abrupt the song just stops.
That’s the point lol. It’s funny 😂😂
I love this film.
The same way I think about him :D. Favorite actor of all time
i love this song
Damnit now I gotta watch the movie again 🙄😆
he was awesome back then (titanic) and he's awesome now (Inception)
.
either he was always or he isn't, you cant pick and choose. He's a top notch actor and always was.
“Do it again, for ME.”
Lol why for you?
0:55 to 1:10 is the best part.
love this movie. LOVE IT
Great intro
whalberg is like a jakal, i admire him
DIcaprio in this movie reminds me of myself! I just hope i dont die in the end!!! :)
This is such an awesome fucking movie lol. I still feel it; when you first saw this film in theaters, you knew you weren't watching some cgi-heavy, explosive adventure, but you still knew especially at this build-up that you were watching something epic anyway, that these two guys were working towards an iconic clash and be players in something big. Intertwined destinies. One hunts the other. I can't think of too many other 1-v-1s in film that are that good.
my favorite movie review describes this soundtrack "makes you want to get in a fistfight with a mountain lion"
Marty should have done more movies with a "plot."
“You wanna serve the commonwealth this is your chance”
Shipping up to Boston made this movie
fucking badass sense!
DIcaprio in this movie reminds me of myself! I just hope i dont die in the end!!! i am from Boston and my Favorite Band is DKM! :)
I wish Scorsese make more Irish gangster movie. :)
This would be such a great walk out song as a boxer
Yeah couldn't find it myself at the time I was looking so I took the matters in my own hands ;)
i know this sounds weird but leo's got some incredible bone structure in his face!
I noticed it the first time I saw the movie, and it still creeps me out to this day.
"What, you wanna hear about the showers? Is that what you want to hear about?"
@chickenpotpie97 there's one thing i don't get, frank its suposed to be irish, but, his surname is Costello, which is italian isn't it? anyway, any word on the possible actors for the sequel?
Fuck brilliant, 20 minutes into the damn movie, we get the opening title with a truly incredible shot from the master Scorsese.
lol what's with Martin Sheen saying "do it for me"? Honestly though, one of the best intro titles. 18 minutes into the movie and it really sets up what's coming, great stuff.
That is one sexy intro.
This was he best performance since Boogie Nights.
great film
Melhor filme da vida
0:53 is the reason we are here :)
Scorsese is GOD
This scene hurt me.
Any guesses as to what number captain Queenan wrote down for Costigan?
Reminds me of a kid from Worcester
pause at 1:16. See how the X is right on top of Matt damon´s character?.. That is no coincidence.. At the end before he gets shot if you watch the floor when he gets outta the elevator, The floor has a Lot of RED X´s.
And so Dicaprio starts working for the Illusive Man
Was this the last great movie made? Seriously, from 2006 till today, what’s come out anyone will remember 10 years from now?
You didn’t like TDK (2008) ?
