- The superb John Wilson Orchestra, under its highly versatile founder-conductor, is seen here in their 'Rodgers & Hammerstein' Prom concert from 2010. This Overture was just one of the many fabulous musical items that delighted the 5000-strong audience on that splendidly memorable evening in London's Royal Albert Hall.

2022. Its music like this that keeps me sane in this demented dysfunctional world.
Yep - John Wilson for SIR in 2022? Whose with me?
How sad would our world be without music and all the arts... a wonderful orchestra under the baton of a wonderful conductor
A great conductor and impresario. A great orchestra. Greatly passionate musicians. Great music. That’s it. ❤
The lush tone of this orchestra is absolutely gorgeous. You don't just hear this music, you are bathed in it.
duncann this isMUSIC .
The sound produced by the John Wilson Orchestra is often described as Technicolor for the Ears
Couldn't have put it any better! :)
I was thinking " how does he manage to get that Hollywood sound" and then it hit me: pure love ..... and hand picked orchestra members.
When you look through the Violinists in this Concert they include the Leaders from - BBC Symphony Orchestra, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, Halle Orchestra, BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra to name just those I recognise,
True enough, but in this instance the "Hollywood sound" is also because Wilson & his excellent orchestra are playing the actual overture from the 1956 Hollywood film version of the King and I (with Yul Brynner & Deborah Kerr) as orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett & Co.! A beautiful performance of a beautiful score!
I still believe that there’s something that John Wilson does with stings that no other conductor does. It feels like air when the string section plays, like eating sweet drugs that make u float with ecstasy. I think that’s down to him, not only down to the exceptional playing
@@olliemartinelli4034 There’s a video somewhere on YT where JW explains how he gets the glamorous, lushly shimmering sound of the strings. They do play their instruments differently. It’s a technique used in the MGM orchestra in the 1950s, not used in classical orchestras.
Clever
I was a little boy when my mother, who was a single mom, took me to see the Ki g & I at the movie.theater. Even at that early age of 7, I fell in love with the music. Watching this wonderful orchestra and its Maestro conductor brings back that magical time with my mom, who is gone now. She so loved Rodgers & Hamerstein's musicals, and because of her, I do as well. I am 63 now with twin boys and I have passed on to them what Mama gave me.
Thank you JWO for continuing the tradition of the wonderful Broadway musical classics.
This is what the nice old world is like. Respect, courtesy, a warm smile, manners and a whole lot more. A very refreshing feeling to what was once was...
This is what nostalgia is all about. Sure many things were better back then but also many things were worse. Fortunately most people tend to think of the positive side of the past which is probably no bad thing.
What incredible music and lyrics Rogers and Hammerstein wrote... I remember all these songs. My father played them on the violin, my grandmother and brother played them on our pianos, my mother sang and I danced... great memories
This orchestra must be the best in the world. I saw them in the Albert Hall in London, magical.
I just adore the King and I, the John Wilson Orchestra gives such a passionate, stylish performance to
one of the iconic musicals of all time and one of my favourites, brings back happy memories when I had
the opportunity to audition for one of the Royal Princesses as a child in the West End Production and
in later years for the role of Tuptim.
Some of the most glorious songs ever written. "I Have Dreamed", "Hello, Young Lovers", "Shall We Dance"
Like champaign, and brilliantly musical
Great music like this will never die. Unlike the cr*p that passes for music today.
Agreed. This is the new classical music. Relevant, beautiful, deceptively difficult to play well and just look at the way they are playing it and putting it across. No sleepwalking through done to death opuses here! Go see this orchestra live, it's mind blowing!
i did last year the shear quality of the sound and arrangements is staggering and beautiful,
You,ve never said a truer word.Marvellous plus ,plus plus
It doesn't make sense to compare Classical music and Musicals. Each one has its own flavor and deserve the same interest and quality of performance. You don't compare Caviar and Foie gras! Both are at the top. Wilson is a great director and his orchestra probably the best today as this kind of music is concerned and that's all there is to say. You may have exactly the same thrill at a performance of a Beethoven or Mahler symphony if the orchestra and its conductor are the level of such tremendous scores which are hugely difficult to play. The rest is a question of personal tastes and both are to be respected.
If you have not seen this John Wilson Interview then you need to watch it czcams.com/video/kuhSknw3Gm8/video.html
Fantastic and up lifting, this music makes the sad world of today a better place.
Amen. We could sure alot more uplifting music. Thanks for sharing
Rikk Wake , music always does that, thank God.
@@TheCarsche Yes especially right now
Sokehow, up in Musical Heaven, I am aure the great Alfred Newman is looking down and smiling at John Wilson's masterful baton.
This is the "before the titles" Overture for the FILM VERSION prepared by Alfred Newman, Ken Darby, and Edward Powell based on Robert Russell Bennett original show Orchestrations. Wow! Pretty awesome sound! The soundtrack album was released in Hifi Stereo and was a smash hit in 1956. Nice job folks
This takes me back to my childhood- myself, my older brother and one or two of my cousins were siamese children in a 1960 production of the king and I. I was five years old.
When Yul Brenner did his final revival in Chicago my daughter auditioned to be one of the King's children. She is half Thai and got to the final cut where she lost out because she was too tall for the child part she would be playing. She was taller than the child selected to play the king's oldest son! But we did get three tickets to see the play out of this.
Fabulous music, we need more R & H played regularly, some of the finest music of all time.
My first exposure to R&H was Cinderella starring Brandy
@@manuelorozco7760 That was a very very nice rendition. Appropriate for this time in history...but the other two were and still are incredible.
First one with Julie Andrews...the second one with Leslie Ann Warren.
The second one was done with a very minimal set...but Leslue Ann really is the epitomy of Cinderella.
Again...all three spectacular in their own way.
Now expose yourself to all of the Rogers and Hammerstein music, if you havent already. Beautiful!!!
" The King and I" who can ever forget this beautiful iconic Musical, Beautiful music, beautiful lyrics and based on a true story. Mr John Wilson's brings such energy and warmth in his orchestration, GREAT performance, " The King and I " musical is one of my favourites and the duet Song between Tuptim and Lun Tha " I Have dreamed " is one of the most wonderful songs to sing as there is great passion behind the lyric. Just love this timeless musical FOREVER.
The golden age of musical theater is forever.
The first musical I have seen from that era has to be Guys and Dolls
A triple time capsule: this Prom concert with John Wilson and his Orchestra (2010) AND the score of the 1956 movie based on the 1951 Broadway musical.
John Wilson is the consummate time traveler.
Beautiful arrangement to one of my favorite movies & overtures.
wow this brings back such fond memories of lying on the floor listening to the little boxed sets of 45's when i was 6 years old. my parents would go to broadway shows and buy the sets of recordings of each show. what an amazing time in america that such beautiful music could be composed and played in such a spectacular way.
Creating good music is about expression. John Wilson understands that. Look at his orchestra and tell me I'm wrong. What a wonderful direction for my beloved favorite artform.
I have always absolutely loved the music from the King and I. This overture is gorgeous and the orchestra is flawless! I can’t get over how beautiful this is! Thank you for sharing this video!
Gorgeous. Gorgeous. Gorgeous. ...Made me cry with happiness. So many memories.
What a delightful overture AND motion picture. Music and movie one of my all time favorites
'Hello, young lovers' is just the most beautiful melody ever written for a musical.
Recorded solely for the LP but when the film was rereleased in 70mm in 1961 it played before the film started as part of the roadshow presentation. Newman was a genius.
In the roadshow presentation there is the Overture, the Intermission and the Exit Music
I can never understand what's going on within someone's mind to thumbdown such a beauty like this...
Someone who is looking for attention! sad 😔
I remember every song!!!
Having seen the Lincoln Center revival I can truly say this show and its fantastic Words and Music will endure forever!
I can and have listened to this many times...perfect music.
Superb.,..I sing every song
They sound fabulous. A classic R&H overture!! Thrilling!
BECAUSE THEY ARE THE BEST---IN THE WORLD!
I have dreamed is the most beautiful song R&H ever composed.
And, according to my recollection, wasn't included in the movie? Although it appears on the movie soundtrack album. I agree with you, quite possibly the most beautiful song those 2 wrote, among a string of magnificent compositions.
Sweeps you away.
Oh how i love john Wilson
Me too, but where is John Wilson with this orchestra these days? I miss them so much.
@@patricialavender2902and Stella! John is already spoken for x
@@patricialavender2902 He conducts the Sinfonia of London now. A lot of the musicians are the same ones as here
John Wilson is wonderful. He conducts music I happen to love which naturally thrills me, but he’s also one of the most watchable conductors I’ve ever seen. Great great great .
John Wilson conducts with his heart. Wonderful.
I agree Wilson is a master of the musical what more can one say JUST WONDERFUL.
Formidable l’orchestre et le Chef.
ES UNA HERMOSURA ESTE HOMBRE .
I love this orchestra so much. Saw them live this year at the Royal Albert Hall. Must save up for next year. I try to imagine what it must be like to be one of the superb musicians here, especially the violinists. Must be such a thrill. In my next life maybe.....!
I love this orchestra
Wish there were more like this!
I'm in heaven. What fabulous music and wonderful performance!. Thank you! Mom and Dad saw this on Broadway when it first came out. The world needs this so much. Fabulous music, great art forms, heal. Soul heals. Don't miss a day without it. Sending love to all out there. Stay safe.
@susangill7494: THEN YOU PARENTS MUST HAVE SEEN GERTRUDE LAWRENCE!! How fortunate. And Dorothy Sarnoff and Doretta Morrow were in the cast at that time with bald one. GERTRUDE LAWRENCE! Damn this made my day! Thank you ❤️
The arrangment really shows off the violas and cellos' voice. Very lush!
Wonderful music beautifully played
Would love to see this orchestra live brilliant
This magnificent orchestra and this marvelous maestro are a joy to watch!! Breathtaking!! Bravo!
GREAT ORCHESTRA, ARRANGEMENT, MUSICIANS, ARRANGERS, CONDUCTOR

Hello Young Lovers - beautifully played
Isn't it!!!
There are no words.......
AWESOME, Beautiful movie. Great Orchestra. CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL
Absolutely a gift to the WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The King and I’s beautiful score was among the baby steps of when I was becoming big into musicals. Nicely done
This is truly great music. Mozart would be gobsmacked.
The unforgetable Yull Bryner
What an incredible sound !
What an amazing orchestration.

I just love this orchestra! Thank you John Wilson and each and every member of your great orchestra. I could listen to you forever! Bravoooooo!
Robert Russell Bennett did the original orchestrations.
Magnificent!
Stunning
One word,,,,,,super and magic
JUST THE ONE?
This music is being played all over the world today. In 1960 George Burns predicted that it would be.
Thank you John Wilson,
Beautifully done thanks to John Wilson and his orchestra.
The orchestra are enjoying playing wonderful sounds.
Love this!
This is the 20th Century Fox cinema version, originally recorded under the baton and supervision of the immortal Alfred Newman. The final selection of the medley, “Hello, Young Lovers,” retains the coda heard in the original Broadway production, orchestrated by Robert Russell Bennett.
Thanks for the info on Newman and Bennett.Yes.Newman was immortal and he often used Bennett along with the great Edward B. Powell who all orchestrated for Newman.
How wonderful to hear this version live. It's not the original Broadway overture, but the "Overture" from the film which existed pretty much on the Capitol Soundtrack album only. Bravo.
Correct. Only recorded for the LP. Not part of the film. Lovely to hear it again.
Magnificent !!!
Best orchestra going. All handpicked top musicians. Miss these prom concerts with the JW orchestra. Now known as the Sinfonia of London.
1:12 to 1:58 - a trip to Paradise..... absolutely ravishing...... great, great, superb John Wilson Orchestra.....
Antonio Silva l
R & H, WHAT A BRILLIANT SCORE WITH MOST OF THE BEAUTIFUL MELODIES BELONGING TO THE SUB PLOT! 🙂!
So beautiful!!!!!
Qué maravilla!!!!! I love this man JW!!
Hear, hear also for Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein the 2nd for their great contributions to B'Way & Hollywood. Without the likes of them and many other composers music wouldn't glisten as much or have staying power
Aunts & uncles singing these songs at parties....all gone now.
I still sing them
Exactly!
Wonderful!
Scott Johnson /
Fantabulous symphonic orchestra. Napakaganda naman, Love it. Bellissimo. C’est Magnifique.
quite right, and none better
This is what Broadway shows should be but unfortunately the talent is gone
Wise choice using the orchestrations that Alfred Newman used in the film version. Mr. Wilson knows what's best. Hooray.
The music from all those film versions, were way way better arranged and recorded, that any stage orchestrated versions could be. Technology accepted.
The final incredible notes with the cymbal crashes are taken from 'Something Wonderful'.
When you are King, YOU ARE KING!
It is fantastic to hear the overture in up-to-date sound, both here and on the corresponding R&H / Wilson CD. The overture is not in the film I assume because it features I Have Dreamed, which sadly is not in the film, though fortunately it was recorded as it is on the original LP. It is of course an absolutely glorious melody. And performed with such heart by Wilson and his orchestra. It is truly something wonderful.
Hmm, "I Have Dreamed" was in the 1956 film of "The King and I" (saw the film c.10 times in 1956!) Maybe it was cut later renditions?
@@pnocellaYou are incorrect. “I Have Dreamed” was one of the three songs cut from the Broadway cast album when the film was made. “My Lord and Master” and “Shall I Tell You What I Think Of You” and the Overture were not included. Music for “Western People Funny” was used as underscoring. The soundtrack was sequenced in the same order as the Broadway cast album even though the songs are in different order in the film. When the stereo version of the soundtrack was released, “Getting to Know You” was shortened and the two love duets combined.
Solo in Italia non si fanno queste serate...il massimo che possiamo elargire e' l'orchestra di Arbore...e consimili...
La violinista rubia . Emblemática figura.
Hermosa obertura
You can sum up musical theater in just two words: Oscar and Hammerstein.
tiffsaver Rogers and Hammerstein
incomparable
How right you are. The best of the best. None better
That’s three. And let’s not forget a certain Mr. Rodgers
I HOPE THAT WAS JUST AN OVERSIGHT. ALTHOUGH ROGER'S HAD MANY GREAT SUCCESSES WITH LORENZ HART, HIS VERY BEST MUSICAL CREATIONS CAME LATER, WITH OSCAR HAMMERSTEIN THE SECOND'S MARVELOUS LYRICS, THAT WERE SO MUCH PART OF THE STORYLINE. TRULY HAND IN GLOVE PERFECTION.
Eight bars of simply beautiful cello counter melody from 1:10. If that doesn't move , I feel really sorry for you.....
nice. it's like they have tuned out the violins and singing their own version
At 4:55 the violins counter the celli throughout a verse.
I feel sorry for people who are not moved by this amazing music too! I played the violin and viola for 10 years. I was good but not good enough to have a career in music. Besides, i had other things in mind. One piece we played in jr. High was music from the king and i. I still remember how thrilled i was to play this stunning music. Music like this will never die and can move people forever!
Beautiful, who can say more?
I can say more. Marvelous. Anyone else have anything to say?
@@mudgebauer EXQUISITE
mudgebauer Wonderful!!
Orchestrations are by Edward B. Powell, Gus Levene, Bernard Mayers and Robert Russell Bennett.
BASED ON ANNA AND THE KING OF SIAM!
NO! Really?
Yul bryner and Debra Kerr...
Thumbs up
NOW---thats more like it John. NOBODY, wrote show music like Roger's and Hammerstein. When they died, so did musical theatre--with a few exceptions.
I agree. I think it's wonderful that Sondheim was a protege of Oscar's. He talks about him so warmly as a father figure.
While I strongly disagree that musical theatre died with Rodgers and Hammerstein, I think it goes without saying that they were unique talents and that they popularized "Broadway" beyond the confines of New York City.
BELLA MUSICA
Marvelous music.
Super Tiger X
Thanks to Oscar Hammerstein II❤
Shall we dance WAS NOT on here .What a shame...
It's not part of the overture ... an overture doesn't include a review of the whole damned score, it opens the performance
@@Marcel_Audubon Yes, Ouverture doesnt means "Soundtrack"
Yul Brynner
no, john Wilson
