Squatch is an amazing family dog!
In our home, with our children, Pomeranians and Husky. He is a gentle giant. Sometimes as an owner I need to take him to the veterinarian or other places and he loves riding in the car with me. But when we need to transit anywhere with a lead he gets as you see him. Otherwise he is a model dog. I knew exactly what I was getting. He was socialized all the time as a puppy. We started to see at about 8 months he was getting anxious around people that weren’t in his clan. We just want Squatch to live his best life. If he can master being on lead then the world opens up for him.
Also Squatch guards our avocado farm at night. We are plagued with Mexican cartels and very dangerous people. 25 miles from police service. Just a bark from Squatch makes them think twice. No theft in three years with Squatch. 10-30k loss years prior. He is exactly what we need. God bless!

@@markbuhl7561Squatch will get there. You have the right mind and heart to help him get there. What is really important to keep in mind, is that these mastiffs ripen extremely slowly. Now at age thee, he's actually just a toddler. And yet he feels that he is important for you because of the job you assigned to him. The most important thing he has to get into his head is that he is free from his job as soon as you're around. It might take him until he is 6 or even 8 yo before he really grasps AND accepts this concept. It helps if YOU keep it firmly in your head ALL THE TIME.
It would have been great if he had had an older and more experienced mastiff as a mentor, but that is not how it went. But if things turn out the way i see that they CAN turn out, Squatch himself will be that mentor for a series of fierce avocado guards.
Another thing to keep in mind is that mastiffs, at least the Spanish and Portuguese which i am familiar with, originally do their job in a team. If Squatch is alone out there at night, that might very well be the reason for his over-reacting because he righteously feels that it all comes down on him. This makes it even more important to make it clear to him that he can relax when you're around. BUT! To make this concept work, you will have to CONVINCE him that you are at least as smart as he is and this will prove to be your biggest challenge!
The most precious compliment i have ever received in my life was my mastiff looking at me with an expression that radiated: "You know, for being a human you're actually not THAT stupid..." By the time i achieved that status, he was 9 years old.
Good luck, my friend. You have the best of all furry companions and it is up to you to enable him to fulfill his enormous potential. Please consider to have one of your daughters maintaining an own yt channel about him. It will be wonderful to follow his development and it will help your whole family to focus on the task at hand. ❤❤❤

This breed should not be in that climate !!! It does not belong there and that makes 'm grumpy and easily triggered. I'm afraid this good meaning procedure's nevertheless won't work 'cause you're trying to fit a cylinder in a square hole. Some breeds are just too 'instinctive' and tuned to their natural surroundings.

      @Prairiesandthewander Před měsícem +5

To add to this, I think people need to understand that dogs are not humans. Yes, there is a certain line that becomes excessive and actually abusive/cruel, but dogs need and live off of structure and part of that is communication and reasonable corrections as needed. Dog to dog corrections can be very intense, much more than what the average person will do.
I love my dog to death and she returns the same. I could raise a hand to her and act like I am going to hit her and she wouldn’t even flinch, because I don’t do that to her. However, there have been times I’ve had to correct her and she understands. If in two times I say leave it and you don’t, then you’re going to feel it the third time. I don’t mean hit I mean correction with the leash.
This lady was walking by with her dog one time, which was lunging, snapping, and snarling. My dog started to get excited, but I had already told her twice with light correction to leave it. So, I corrected the third time that would relay how serious I meant it. Which made her stop and do what was expected of her.
The lady had the audacity to try and say I was being abusive to my dog and that I needed to do positive reinforcement instead. To which I said,” First off, that wasn’t abusive, I wasn’t beating my dog to death I gave her a solid, swift, single correction with the leash and a firm tone to stop her behavior. She ignored the first two times I told her leave it. I don’t need someone, who doesn’t know her, to tell me how to train and correct my dog. As you see she stopped, is paying attention to me, and behaving.
Second, how is the positive reinforcement working for your dog because that behavior is not okay, that could get your dog hurt or someone else hurt. It’s not the dog’s fault, it’s the owner if so. Finally, I still do positive reinforcement, but my dog requires more assertive communication when being handled and misbehaving. She has a heightened prey drive from her bloodline, which were used for hunting dogs, so her focus will quickly turn tunnel vision, if I do not correct it and pull her out of it. When she goes tunnel vision, treats and other means to try and draw her attention do nothing. She is dead set on one thing. The correction is the only effective thing to give her something else to think about and pull out of the hyper-fixation. I’ve worked extensively with her and have found what works. Maybe you should just learn that you don’t know everything and to leave other people alone, looks like you and your dog need some more training too.”
The lady just turned and walked off.

For everyone asking why the dog doesn’t already have a muzzle on before we start training.. It’s because most owners don’t understand what they have in their hands until it gets out of control. By the time someone suggests a muzzle to them it’s not so easy to condition the dog to a muzzle. They tried putting a muzzle on him but he pulls it right off. I instructed them on what to do to get him comfortable with the muzzle so the next training session will go a lot smoother!

We've had him 2 months and he's a huge baby... if he knows you. It took a couple of hours to gain his trust and then he moved in. We're working on his stranger danger way of thinking. Walks are a challenge, but we won't give up on him.

I really appreciate having them since we can't afford a trainer. We're elderly and even with my limited knowledge, energy, time and resources I'm still making the effort.

This is interesting. I had wondered how you would deal with a giant, aggressive breed of dog that is too big to overpower.. We rescued a dog that had been abused and neglected. He was in terrible shape when we found him: a few missing teeth, sticks imbedded in his skin, very thin. He's healthy now--has grown to 170 lbs and is a livestock guardian breed. Training him has been no joke, but we're making progress.

It's a good thing that DD has changed what he shows in his videos and shows more of the actual training as opposed to showing mostly the most difficult part BEFORE the actual training. Most people assume, wrongly, that the early part where the dog is fighting is part of the training. It is NOT. It is just his technique of getting dogs to where they will listen. The real training begins once the dog realizes, on its own, that nothing bad will happen. That what most critics don't get, or refuse to get.

My family and I rescued two Tibetan mastiffs 5 years ago, you have got to do your homework before getting one. They are one of the oldest, pure breeds in the world. Highly intelligent, independent thinkers, stubborn and extremely powerful. They only breed once a year and can be wonderful family dogs, but never let your guard down. You have to manage their training every day and every member of the family has to follow the same rules and training you have set up. Dog daddy loss the hat and glasses Tibetan mastiffs DO NOT like them. The owner needs to be the alpha at all times. If my mastiffs don't think I'm in calm control they will take it upon themselves to take charge. The easiest way to understand them is to think that I'm the queen.... I eat first, go though doors first, they do as they are asked the first time when they look at me to say he'll no they are corrected instantly with the cchhcchh noice that you here dog daddy make. Also when walking them I correct with lead and also tap their bum with foot or my knee gently to refocus them. They are hard work but so worth it. Don't encourage them to be bred by breeders as these dogs are for very experienced people. 🥰
