  • I bought a beautiful piece of land with a small stone cabin on it close to the aegean sea. Its called Pelion or South Pilion in the opposite of Skiathos. The plan is to build an off grid homestead in the middle of greece...with own water and own electricity.

If he puts those trees into production they have to be pruned ...I'm no expert but I've been watching Sarah & Luca & baby Luce in Sicily (LEAW) and that is what they did with help from friends. He looks too old frankly to be scrambling up high into the trees to gather olives, maybe he can get some help. Honestly, they look prettier unpruned, and natural & I'm not sure there are machines in Greece that shake the trees that are employed on some farms. Besides, he wants a view ...and he said he would relocate a few of those trees to obtain the view he desires. @@031doolittle

As a Greek. If I was you and had the money I would make a brand new house that matches the architectural type of the Pelion with respect to the local traditions and the nature. It's important to preserve the cultural wealth of the area that we are welcome. Good luck and stay calm and patient.

He has to go traditional if he's building new, the nomarchia has this requirement, thank God! Ceramic roof, wooden window-frames, plakes Piliou etc. I think building permits are not issued at the moment in Magnisia, however, due to previous irregularities, so maybe things will have to change before that can happen.

Save yourself a lot of money and build a rainwater collection system. I have a farm in Turkey and have drilled twice for water and found nothing. I regret not just building a rain water collection system. There is plenty of rain from November to May for the summer months. For a property your size, 60 to 80 tons should be enough.

Two suggestions as a former olive oil producer: a) Get a local to show you how to trim the olive trees, because you chopped some very good and productive branches and generally that was hard to watch. b) Get a triskeli (three-legged) ladder from a local. Olive trees are not usually suitable for ladders that lean on the tree trunk, thus you need a triskeli which is still a bit dangerous, but a lot safer than what you did.

First minute into the video and I knew it was Pelio then saw Skiathos in the background and the beaches so you are somewhere around Paleohora. Welcome to Pelion neighbor and good luck with your project . It takes years to do something from nothing in Pelion. There was an old stone house which was collapsed, on the property I bought so I bulldozed it all and built new. If you are a skilled tradesman no worries. If not, my best wishes. My homestead is in Northern Greece built that when I was 40 and my beach house is near you built that at 50. Again all the best of luck. Send a note if you need any technical advise. Nick

@@caseybachmeyer The Greek way is as follows: Buy an old caravan, no need to be able to move, just ensure is it weather proof and have them sent it over. As long as it has wheels it is not a building therefore you have established a roof over your head without messing with the bureaucracy. Even when you built etc it is going to be useful for storage or accommodate friends etc. Round two, figure out what is happening with the water in the area, if are You allowed to drill and what are the chances. Best way to find out is by searching what is happening to the properties around as well as by asking the locals. Be discreet, don’t reveal much just gain infos. Entering a local society and making them trust you and accept you gonna take years. Next round is electric power acquisition gonna be needed for the pump etc etc. if the existing building even as is has been declared in the property most possibly gonna be easy to get it. Finally ask the locals bout the sewage how it works etc. they usually build tanks. All the above are based on minimum expenses, getting to know the locals will help as they are aware of all the loopholes. Notice : the Greek National land registry is a service getting digital for some years now, ensure your property is registered to you correctly. Any questions feel free to ask.

Welcome to Greece Mr. Bachmeyer, I was also in your shoes for over 10 years and I have to say that you belong to the land from now on. You can easily transfer olive trees and don't listen to anyone that say you can't. As long as you plan it well and bring a heavy JCB machine nothing can go wrong. You will need to invest in some serious prouning machines and it goes without saying you will need a good shredder or wood chipper because the olive trees need yearly pruning to be healthy, beautiful and productive. I loved it and I miss it and when I retire I will leave the city for a land like yours. Have fun and enjoy every minute of the Greek country side. I will be following you in CZcams.

What a beautiful piece of land - and the view - priceless. And I so admire your bravery and determination in taking on this endeavor. However, and I don't want to discourage you in any manner, I deeply suspect that without a moderately comfortable living arrangement as others have previously stated (camper, RV, etc.) and an investment in the appropriate power equipment, this could end up being a short flight - the brutal manual labor will become old very quickly. And please be careful going into that old shed - the partial roof - should it collapse. Trust me, been there, done that on a piece of property. Still, wishing you the very best - and in health and endurance... From the Pacific Northwest, USA.

I went on holiday many years ago on the half-island Pilion. Although I enjoy nature and remoteness, it was a bit too much for us. My bf and me were totally underprepared, e.g. we didn't speak the language and we didn't know that people weren't used to foreigners/ tourists there at all. The village was called Milina, there was no commercial accomodation available there, we stayed in a simple cabin of a German friend and we didn't meet anyone who spoke other languages. A neighbouring village had only received a driveable connection to the mainland ten years ago when we came, so it felt like a time capsule. By accdident, we also stumbled into a "men only" bar in the evening, nobody said anything, but people looked at us with a lot of hostility so we figured it out and left. Despite the beautiful nature, I didn't feel relaxed there. But that was 15 years ago, I hope it is nice now where you are and that they treat you more welcoming if you don't come as a tourist. I think you defo need that fence, we couldn't do many relaxed hikes because the amount of free roaming and aggressive dogs was crazy, we ran into packs of them almost everywhere, even far away from villages. Look after yourself in that tent please or maybe a guard dog of your own would make sense!

Hi Casey, I enjoyed your video. We are doing something similar not far from you in the Pelion. We have decided to restore the kalivi on our land rather than a new build. Looking forward to hearing what you decide! Very impressed with your Greek!

Perhaps do the ruin up to a shed for tools etc. Build a new house on a hight, so you overlook the trees and don't have to transplant or damage them. The view is everything!

If you plan to do lots of cutting & pruning then I recommend getting a quality saw like a silky forester; definitely the best out there. It'll allow you to cut from the ground rather than having to use a ladder all the time. I'd also get a woodchipper that can do up to 10 or 12cm diameter so you can transform all of those prunings into food for your soil rather than burning it which most people in the mediterranean basin tend to do.

You will need to buy a "tsapa" for leveling and garden work. As around and they will tell you. there is also a "tsapa" tool with holes for reducing the weight.

Wow!! What a magical spot you have found , the views of the blue sea are everything , there's a ton of work to do before you can call the land a home , but I am sure it will be worth it ,how ever it's going to be back breaking work , so a tent will do you no favors. You need a good nights rest for that kind of work , a small cheap caravan would be a good investment while you build , some where to sleep and cook , New Sub here greetings from Wales

      @caseybachmeyer  Před měsícem +2

thank you very much! And you are right, of course. There will be a better solution for this, maybe a small wooden cabin or a bigger tent.

That is a beautiful piece of land. What a view…You cannot cut olive trees in Greece but you can transplant them, correct? I am looking for a piece of property just like yours. Do you need a neighbor, is there another property you know of? Please let me know. Good luck with your project and if you need any help I am available and very handy.

Hello sir congrats for this beautiful land! I want to give you an advice for your pickax. It is not safe to use it like that. You need to push it tight to the end of the wooden stick, after that you need to put the head of the pickax in the water for some days. By doing that the wood will expand making the metal part more stable. Ask the guy that helped you with the water for some advice about the tools that you use!

question for the greeks watching this, why is that cabin made with that red dirt? what is it? is it a special dirt that you create, or just normal dirt that you can find all over greece in the ground?

  • @joannagrimmer

Lovely location Casey. Can see why you chose it. Will be fascinating and inspiring to see how you develop it. And good to see you have a structure to turn into a dwelling! You mentioned moving a couple of olive trees and I know this can be contentious, so I am wondering if you can find a tree removalist who will come and rescue and re-home trees you can't use, especially when yours have been well pruned and taken care of. I don't know if you would be remunerated for your donation or even have to pay, but it does get them fully - roots and all - out of your way and into someone elses farm or garden.
