How to register a salvage vehicle without any inspections

  • What Is a Salvaged Vehicle?
When we refer to a 'salvage vehicle,' we are not referring to the function of the vehicle; we are referring to the status of the title itself. Now, having a salvage title is not an automatic disqualifier for using the car on public roads. Instead, it generally means that the vehicle will be legally roadworthy once the required repairs are made and inspected. Not all states require an inspection before being registered and deemed roadworthy, but several of them do.
There is a significant difference between a salvage title and a rebuilt title, which we will get into in a bit. But the bottom-line upfront is that you want your vehicle back on the road, or you found a great deal on a car or truck with a salvage title, and it operates excellent, but you are pretty sure that you will have to pass inspection first; you need some assurance that you aren't getting yourself an albatross.
Registering your car or truck with a salvage title out of state is a great option when you want to keep the vehicle. However, if you do not intend to keep the car, you may want to move to another solution like repairing it completely and requesting a rebuilt title. Unless you are in South Dakota, our target state for this study, you may well find out that it is hard to sell your car with a salvage title. The reason being that the prospective owner will need to jump through the same hoops as you to get a rebuilt title for it and register it in-state. This factor will substantially impact your car's resale value.
What Is The Difference Between Salvage and Rebuilt Title?
Part of the answer to this question is up to you, the owner because each state is different. Many states require an inspection to get the car back on the road, conducted upon repairing the vehicle to a roadworthy status.
A rebuilt title indicates to a buyer that the vehicle in question has been brought back to a fully restored safe working order. The other branding for the rebuilt title might be a reconstructed title. Now, it is important to differentiate that a 'restored' title in this sense does not mean restoration of a classic or collectible car or truck. It just means that the vehicle in question has been brought back to a road-legal condition.
The reasoning behind an inspection before issuing a rebuilt or reconstructed title is largely pro forma; it is to cover everyone's backside by allowing a vehicle back on the roadways that were once in an undrivable condition. In addition, it lends credibility that the car is basically in as good of shape as it was before being damaged.
But I'm Not Interested in Selling; I Just Want To Drive It!
Most states do not afford the option to legally register and drive a car still branded as salvage without having it inspected, and we all know what that means. If you get the car inspected and it doesn't pass, you will receive a veritable laundry list of repairs that need to be made, and then you must come back for reinspection. Well, at this point, you might as well just do all the work necessary to get the car on a rebuilt status! South Dakota is rare in that you can register and tag the vehicle with no inspection required!
    Insurance Concerns
Perhaps the biggest concern with the scenario is whether you can insure your car or truck with a salvage title. Just because you can register it legally does not make you road legal.
The short answer is yes: you can legally insure a salvage title car or truck. But the devil is in the details.
There is no guarantee that your insurance will cover the titled salvage car, so you will have to contact and insurance broker like myself licensed all over the country and see what we can do for you. The best estimates are that about 20%-30% of insurance companies will not underwrite and issue a policy for salvage titles. However, we know and have all those companies.
One option that you might try if your existing company doesn't insure a car with a salvage title or if the rate is high is to contact a broker like myself that works with a list of non-standard companies that assumes high-risk cases.
The unfortunate thing about a salvage vehicle title is that it is not always an accurate indicator of a vehicle's roadworthiness. For example, a car that has been damaged by hail is probably fine mechanically, but it ends up being titled the same as a flood or theft recovery. However, if your state has unrealistic or untenable salvage vehicle registration, we recommend company’s like Dirt Legal.com who have your title solutions for you right now. Register it out of state and get back on the road fast with a perfectly legal registration and tag.

My car is in the process of being vixed now. It had minor issues from an accident and was deamed as a total loss. I own the car so my salvage title should be coming in soon. Once the car is fixed and i had you guys get me a new title in your state how hard would it be to switch over to Massachusetts and get plates etc...

I'd like to buy a salvage vehicle & use most of the frame, powertrain cabin dash but use hood, fenders glass bumpers from another good title car. Since registration is good on the surface car but most of what's important or compromised will be that of the doner salvage car how do you suggest i could go about insuring such a car? Could it be covered like a kit car or just consider it a one off custom car & get special insurance for it? Thanks for your help.

so i bought a g37 that was salavaged but wasnt given evidence of damage done to the car and no bill of sale just got the salvaged title. I have located and fixed the airbag light and left front headlight but forgot to take pictures of before and after. I contacted my insurance and gave me a paper to sign for a bond title but when i went to the dmv they asked for evidence of the damage it had before because without evidence i cant get it inspected. Should i go to a junk yard and buy get some bad g37 parts to make it look like it fixed those since i forgot to take pictures of the parts i already fixed?

My 2012 Toyota Sienna has paint scratches and a couple dents on the passenger side. It only needs new doors on that side that we can do under 2k. We plan to keep this van till it needs to go to junk yard like we do all our vehicles. It's worth between 12k-13k. Our insurance did a "total loss" on it and offered us 10k for it. I know it's worth more with all the ones near us with the same year trim and miles are going for. We are in the middle of moving to Arizona house. The car is title in Illinois. I already had plans to drive down this week to get it registered. I do not want to turn the van over and I want to keep it. I'm afraid now Illinois won't release the title to Arizona. We can't keep the title in Illinois and rebuild it, we need it in Arizona. We have not agreed on a settlement with insurance yet and they do know we own 2 homes and our Arizona home is our primary residence.

      @rosalynnweaver3295 Před 29 dny

I ran out of space, do you think Illinois will hold the title with the insurance already claiming a "Total Loss" we have not given the insurance our title and don't plan to till we reach an agreement.
Our van was the only vehicle involved in the crash and originally the insurance company said they would pay 6,9xx and some change after our deductible of 500 to fix it. We agreed to that, they backed out without giving us a reason why.
We have asked them to drop the claim and they said no.

I live in New York, and purchased a salvage camper van, that was abandoned . I am trying to get it inspected in NY. My mechanic put dealer plates on it and drove to the inspection site. They failed the inspection stating needed to verify the ownership ( I had called and was told I didn’t have t9 be there just the letter they sent had to be brought in.) and said they couldn’t get to major parts . I have tied to call , no return calls .. the engine is the only major part I can think of and why could they not get to it? None of this makes sense . They confiscated the dealer plates and made my mechanic personally retrieve then. He has no answers for me except to call and reschedule . Again there not responding . Any advice on how I can get this done would be great . I do not have the orginal paperwork for the ny state has it

Hi Steve, with hail damage in Wisconsin, insurance wants to total my car and pay me to take it. I want to keep it, they said in that case they would pay me a salvage amount. First, they told me, I have to go to DMV and have title switched to salvage. Then they would issue me the check. They told me I could legally drive it that way. I'm not sure she is right on that. Not even sure I would be able to insure it with a salvage title.

Do you what the laws are in NC? Im trying to decide to keep with salvage title vs just sell my 2010 Honda. all damage is cosmetic it really just needs a bumper and tail light which I can buy parts and put together myself super easy. the shop I took it to basically totaled it from their own labor and paint fees. the difference the insurance company is going to pay me is only about a grand difference. My goal is to keep and drive my car if I can get it insured im just confused on what inspection i need to get liability insurance to drive it on the road. I figure if i can't get it insured, I could maybe sell it and still come out to the good, but ive been told in order to sell it it still needs a rebuilt title unless i sell it to the scrap yard.

I purchased a 38 year old Corvette in Nevada that has a North Dakota Salvage Certificate of Title. The Nevada shop that sold the car to me gave me a bill of sale and the North Dakota salvage title that was signed by the registered owner. I have had many years experience in rebuilding hundreds of totaled cars and several Corvettes many years ago when I had my AZ dealership, and I want to repair the car and keep it as my own driver. I am not a dealer and live in Nevada which requires the car to be inspected by a state inspector before I can register the car and get a rebuilt title. Is it even possble for me to get this car legally titled and registered in Nevada after repairs and state inspection? Or do I need to forget about it and part the car out? Was the sale to me legal?
