      Love it. Actors putting their own stakes behind the productions they want to get made. I don't think I've ever seen Hiroyuki Sanada in anything I've disliked and if he's going out of his way to make sure that not only good shows are casting him but even getting greenlit in the first place, then he deserves his success all the more.

      Most countries are bilingual and well versed in English, especially Japanese citizens. Except in outlying territories. My dad was there and China after WWII and was surprised then and my cousin lived there in the 2000's when he played on their professional baseball teams. He learned Japanese even though the players spoke English just because he didn't want to be the "ignorant American" He was already an anomaly, not because he was an American but because he is 6'7" and a pitcher. They don't see many people on a sports team, let alone anywhere, THAT tall. It's a beautiful country. Our oldest and daughter in love were there for 2 weeks and want to go back.

      @@heideleskun1163Do not misunderstand me, you are correct, I think though I understand what the OP is saying. Being able to speak fluently and being able to master the language on the fly are two different things. Not just Sanada but any of the Skarsgards, Mads Mickleson, Jackie Chan or even Van Damme they all can speak and converse in English well, but to come across confident and charismatic has to be a difficult skill to master. I have heard that comedians have difficulty performing in other countries that speak the same language because cultures are different, references are different, phrases are different. It must be difficult but he nailed it.

    • @heideleskun1163
      @heideleskun1163 Před 26 dny +5

      @@jasonflay8818 Yes, comedy just plays different.
      I've met a lot of folks who can go back and forth in languages. My daughters ex fiancee did it with Spanish, Romanian and English. The hardest part of English is learning one word multiple definitions. My Aunts and Uncles on my mothers side could go back and forth easily with Polish and English. So I understand the message just pointing out how other countries can jump back and forth easier than those born here learning another language. Than there's me who can't even swear properly growing up with dual languages spoken in the house. Sad when you can't even swear properly in Polish. lol

      @@heideleskun1163 I've always been jealous of polymaths. We had a foreign exchange student when I was a kid. Toffee is Finnish, at the time he could speak fluently 5 languages could understand one more and was learning another. He was APPALLED that by the time I was in 9th grade I wasn't at a conversational level Spanish despite starting in 5th grade, and at that point I had already had 6 teachers. I'm trying to learn Italian right now using an App, but I don't ever think I will get to the level I could give an interview that wasn't stiff in Italian.

    Last year I bicycled japan during autumn 🍁🍂. From Kyoto
    to Tokyo I passed thru Sekigahara. After returning home &
    watching _Shogun_ I wanted to kick myself for not knowing that I
    had passed the battlefield where Tokugawa won his pivotal war.

    His character was based upon the very real Tokugawa leyasu who was founder of the first unified shogun that had the real power of Japan from 1603 until 1868 and the Meiji Restoration brought the power back to the Emperor. Hiroyuki Sanada played him brilliantly. Tokugawa was a brilliant politician and tactician that was thinking 3 steps ahead of his enemies.

By the time I finished it, I had caught the flu and ran a very high fever, which seemed to cause me to hallucinate because in the middle of the night, I found myself in the middle of the living-room arguing with Lord Toranaga I never forgot the name. LOL Still one of my favorite books to this day.

    Tokugawa Ieyasu is about as critical to Japanese history as George Washington is to American history. The Tokugawa Shogunate saw the end of the Warring States period, which was roughly two centuries of nearly continuous civil war, and brought about the Edo period, which was roughly two centuries of peace. So yeah, for anyone curious, Ieyasu is a name essentially every Japanese person should know, and even better, his portrayals in popular media range from grounded and historical to bonkers video game superhero legend status, which is something I'd like to see more of with American history (Abraham Lincoln, Vampire Hunter was a step in the right direction).
