If you’re interested in buying the 2023 Nissan Z, you’re looking at a $40,000 base for the Z Sport. With the Z’s 3.0-liter V6 making 400 horsepower, a colleague of mine mentioned that’s $100/horse. Another great value proposition even for today.
If you get the Z Performance (graphic: Z Performance base price ~$50,000) that will tack on a rev matching feature on your manual transmission, a sport tuned suspension, Bridgestone Potenza performance tires (graphic: Front: 255/40R19 Rear: 275/35R19), a front chin spoiler, rear spoiler and some nice interior extras.
Yes, this is a two-seat coupe, so I could see this feeling a bit snug for someone not of my average 5-5 lady stature. The seats feel nice, even during a long stint and everything is within arm’s reach for me when it comes to controls. Overall, I’m comfortable.
When it comes to the electronic interface this is a vast improvement over the previous 370Z. It’s modern in here, hallelujah! An 8-inch infotainment display comes standard, but you can upgrade to a 9-inch version with navigation. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard as does satellite radio capability. You can upgrade to a premium Bose audio system to appropriately blast your tunes, audio book or self-help podcast confirming how amazing you are while you’re driving to your destination.
I appreciate that there are good driver assistance features in here like blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning, because visibility is a bit hampered by a rather large b-pilar, because sports car.
And I love that it’s got adaptive cruise control standard, even on a manual transmission car, so I can relax a little bit more on the drive.
Even though this Z is a little heavier than the outgoing model, to the tune of about 180 pounds, this engine will make you forget that fact. This turbo feels quick and lively and ready for action. The throttle pedal feels very excitable to me, maybe a bit too gung-ho when you’re just driving normally, but when you’re driving for fun’s sake, it’s great.
The brakes feel good. This car I’m driving has the performance brakes with red calipers and they are quite grabby, great for when you’re out really doing some driving, but in regular commuting they can take some adjusting to. I will also preface all of this by stating that this is a pre-production model so things might change slightly when we get into production.
The chassis the Z rides on is the same as the previous Z. There have been some changes made, it’s been reinforced for more torsional stiffness but that’s only been improved by 11%. Rigidity is improved by almost 24%. That’s a more significant number.
There’s much parity in the suspension set up as well, with a control arm front and multilink rear suspension. That front upper control arm gives it that increased caster and there are now monotube dampers instead of twin tubes, but everything else remains the same, so you’re not going to see a whole lot of difference in driving when at the Z’s limits, or at least as far as I could take it.
As far a balance goes, I think the Z does a nice job around turns, especially if you’re not really pushing the car super hard, which, unless you’re tracking it a lot you likely won’t be doing. You get different modes on the automatic model but nothing customizable like you get on the new Honda Civic Type R now.
The Mazda MX5, Honda Civic Si and Type R, Subaru WRX and BRZ, the Toyota Corolla GR and the Volkswagen Golf GTI and R all still contribute to the manual transmission club. Where does this one rank for me when it comes to rowing? Well, I haven’t gotten in the Corolla GR yet, but I’d say the gearbox on the Z feels mid-pack. Let’s not forget that the Supra is getting a manual as well.
When it comes to design and styling there can be no doubt that the Nissan Z is a 100% looker, especially in this red. On this entire drive people have been taking pictures and waving, and definitely not at me but the car. They bring in so much heritage from previous generations of this car that all work well together, while still being a great blank slate for you doing whatever you want to do with it. I appreciate Nissan’s commitment to adding another real driver’s car into the mix.
There’s so much here to be excited about from the manual transmission, to the exciting engine to the spectacular design. The folks at Nissan have done a great job bring the Z into the modern age. They’ve put together a car that enthusiasts are really going to love making their own.

What do you think about the new Nissan Z styling? Do all the heritage cues work together or do you think this was a missed opportunity for something new?
Love it from all angles inside and out
It looks fantastic. But all reviews kind of point out that it's a little loosey and not really a sports car, which I think it should be. So hopefully yeah, it gets the gizmo treatment
I think they should have structured a bumper or something to break up that large front grill.
🇺🇸 your review is respected! Long history of reviews and experience driving all type of vehicles. Corolla next! SUPRA or Z for performance? styling? Front grill is hideous ..a blackhole.
Love it all except the meh headlights.
As a young Engineer just out of college and on my first real job, I bought a 1992 300ZX Twin Turbo. It was rated at 300 BHP but it was one of the few cars I have ever owned that would burn the tires just with throttle when gently rolling out in first gear. I never lost a race against Vettes or Hipo Mustangs or Camaros. I believe the HP was severely under rated. The car drove like a swiss watch, everything was perfect and tight. A truly great car (a guy who now owns a 2019 Ferrari 488 spider, along with a Land Rover and an F150 Fx4).
Damn money really used to go that far huh. Must have been great.
@@Lorentz_Driver it still should. Any professional occupation like engineer should be able to afford a new Z? No?
Great story, thank you for sharing! We are fans of car fans and you sound like a great one.
How much did you spend back then?
It's crazy to think the 300zxtt was $45k in '90s money and is a bargain these days at $50k for a fully speced one in 2022 money.
Lyn, you're my absolute favorite. Your love of cars and honest reviews are the best. It's like I owned and drove the car myself. So entertaining and so helpful.
We like Lyn's video's, too! Thanks for the comment.

Just when we all thought Nissan was dead, if we remembered them at all, they go and totally redeem themselves.
We agree they did a great job on this one. Definitely part of the conversation now.
Ehh... One car doesn’t make a brand.
@@neeko.b Agree, but have you checked their other offerings? They really did great on redesigning their new cars.
@@adobongadobe Yes, and they’re still not getting great reviews across the board. The Rogue seems to be pretty good, while the Sentra has some glaring issues, like a terrible manual transmission with a lot of rev-hang. Need consistency across the brand in all aspects.
Except dealer markups are going to completely ruin their possible redemption.
I love Kelley Blue Book! Always fun to watch and very informative.
My first car was a Datsun B210 as well, you took me way back to High School. Great unbiased review..and btw you’re hair looks Great 😊 thanks for making me laugh
Great review, Lyn! Micah’s zen CZcams commentary was a total LOL moment. But, did Micah also do your hair and makeup updates throughout the video shoot?
I liked this "story mode" type of video. Very engaging and informative.
We love that you love it. We've got more coming your way, so stay tuned. Thanks for letting us know!
I love that exterior color!
I’ve been waiting for this one! Way to get it, Lyn! 😏
That red color looks nice.
I rarely enjoyed a car review as this one! The car is cool and looks amazing, but a big tumb up for you lady, you sound great, you look professional and added a classy touch to the the all video. Great dialogues too, well done guys! 😊👍
wtf is a tumb?
@@esteban1487 ..."👍"
Excellent review!
Beautiful!
That is a beautiful car!
Lyn is so much fun! Love her reviews.
The car is beautiful and lyn is beautiful ❤️
Excellent video!
I am so curious to see the car in person! Also it is alway fun to see the background and adjacent as a fellow So CA car nerd!
It looks great in person. If you see it next to the OG it does look pretty big, but modern safety regulations make it tough to build a small sports car these days. Thanks for the comment.
So how well does adaptive cruise control work on a manual transmission? I’m so used to automatic with all the new technologies.
So beautiful in red.
loved the b210!!!!
Nicely done, woo!
That 210, it’s reliable. One was in the water for weeks. Putlled out, drained the fluid, replaced battery, and it fired up. Can’t kill that car
I'm in love with physical buttons
Possess excellent knowledge of cars and bikes
Had a 350z and loved the car. Most comfortable ride for long distances.
It's amazing how comfortable something that small actually is. Glad you loved yours.
The back looks incredible but the front has some work to be done. And the pricing is gonna be markup
It looks beautiful. Btw, side comment, the car matches perfectly the lady in the video. Somehow I felt that. Was like "This car suits perfectly this lady".
So much for a summer release, my dealer stated they will get 1 example sometime later this year.
Great video. It’s Jan 2023 here in So Cal and I have yet to see a single one on the road.
Is there wind buffeting with the windows open?
Got mine on order.
It's rare that I say this about a new car.. but I love this.. it's sexy.. compared to the world of SUVs that all look alike..
Thanks
"right at tip in, you just feel it do its thing, its ready for action"
Dream car!
Everything in this car is perfect exept the sound exhaust
We tend to agree. Sounds a bit like the Pathfinder. Great comment.
Nissan knew ppl were gonna put different exhausts on them, so that’s why it’s like that
@@ctrikz_tk8745 Unfortunately in my country I am not allowed to put exhaust, Unless the sound is from the factory, so Nissan is supposed to put the exhaust not the people
@@wahab5.0 In the J Leno video review, they showcase a Nismo factory exhaust they are tuning, it sounds incredible. This just makes it a true JDM tuner car though, reminds me of the '90s and '00s when nobody kept a car stock, they know their typical Japanese and USA customer.
Had a ‘91 2+2 with red leather interior. I still dream about that wonderful car. Was the best friend a single guy could have.
i still have my 90 2+2 except its a NA. Oh how i wish they made a 2+2 2023 Z! Would buy it for sure.
looks pretty good but will it last
I love this especially that podcast with Micah 😂( I think)
Personally, I would not put window louvers on this car. I had louvers on the back window of one of my previous cars, and ended up taking them off. They'd rattle a lot, especially in colder weather. The little clear pieces that sit between the louvers and the glass get hard over time or break and fall off. Much better to just tint the windows, IMO.
Needs a sunroof or T-tops. Will definitely buy that.
Someone I know is cross shopping between a 2005 base model Z51 Vette and this base model Nissan Z. I wonder which one has more potential 🤔
Thanks for the review. A true enthusiast's vehicle albeit I would prefer the Z in a roadster configuration. Oh well dreams are free.
No power seats in that model?
Needs a targa top, then it would be perfect for what i want
A targa would be a compelling addition for sure.
Or t-tops
Final destination - Ventura, Ca ?
Lyn, Micah, and Mike D make a good team
We feel super lucky to have them all. Thanks for the comment.
Z is looking good...Lynne is looking great :)
Man debating if i can do a 2 seater again! Love nissan. Had 350z and 240sx before
Still have my 240sx 👍🏾
日産最近の車👍デザイン美しい👍
Making it a hatchback is very smart.
I say this with the utmost respect- women that drive manuals makes my heart go pitter patter.
Everyone should drive the manuals!!
@@kbb even in LA traffic?
Which road did you carve the twisties and which restaurant did you get the fish tacos?
We drove up Hwy 33 just above Ojai and had a yummy lunch at Spencer Makenzie's in Ventura. It was a great couple of days.
10 years from now, this is mine.
The worst thing about the Z is its dealers marking them up as if its a new chassis new application and not a 370z with a already used Q motor. The dealers are killing the Z.
You didn't mention the exhaust
I can wait until the aftermarket crowd start tuning this bad boy.
Lynn knows how to hype us up. Looks very fun. I wonder if convertible coming?
We'd love to see a targa at the very least!
Micah’s affirmations at 3:32 😌
Been waiting for my pre order since Jan. Nissan deliver it already 😭 summer is almost over!
We'd say something wisened about patience, but waiting for your cool car is super hard, so we feel you. Deliver them already!! Let us know how you like it when you get it.
You resemble a wild and free JEWEL in my humble opinion.
I can’t decide which is sexier, the car or the driver. 😗🙏🤗
the front design reminds me of the old ferrari california. maybe the front grill design was meant to make it not look like a GTR clone to appeal to different buyers. really like the tail light design though, looks like a throwback to the 300Z.
0:22 "come on, you're coming too!" proceedz to drive away before we get on....
赤のZは美人さんに良く似合いますね😌🌸💓
This Z is a grand slam home run. Absolutely love the retro styling. And a manual transmission, still!! Awesome review Lyn!
Yep, they fixed all the things wrong with the 350/370Z in terms of the bulbous styling (especially the rear) only a mother could love and lack of an engine that was easy to get more power out of. Now it's the perfect JDM sports/touring car. Hopefully most of the go fast parts from the Q60 and Z34 transfer over so it will have a strong aftermarket out the gate!
Not hallelujah Lynn you wildin😂😂😂😂😂😂
The new Z's are gonna get a dealer markup onto MSP of about $10-50K depending on the model. So do not get too excited. The Proto Z is already getting a Dealer markup of about $50K...
How old are you?
Nissan dealerships have killed the new Z. These cars are now in the market over $25-$40K over MSRP at many dealerships. Good luck finding one new under $60K
What a shame. I can foresee low sales.
Nice review! It’s good to see a real woman able to be herself and talk earnestly
That was a good Micah Muzio audio tie in. Do people really trash his hair?
Micah always has perfect hair!
The one thing they forgot to mention is that on the Z performance model, you get a limited slip differential that you don’t get on the base model.. That’s a huge over-sight on this video, since limited slip is a huge bonus over a vehicle that doesn’t have it.. How could they have forgotten to mention that?
3:36 *Weird comments about Micah Muzio's hair?* 😄😄😄😄😄 I'd like to know more. Can we sample a few of those?
That shifter is quite shaky?!
True!!
I may either get this or the new Cayman. But first, I need to rob a bank.
I would like to buy but Mfers raised the price!
I had a new 1982 Datsun 280ZX, my first new car.
That's a great first ride!
It was a fun car for an 19 year old
I had a '82 280ZX Turbo bought with 17k miles. LOVED that car. By 130k miles, the suspension needed to be overhauled, clutch needed some work, and rust had started to move in. So, I sold it. It was a bunch of fun while it lasted.
Spencer Makenzie’s!!!
I'm glad they are making this car, but I really think it could have been better. Especially at this price point.
Agreed! Great to see them continue the Z with a manual gearbox, but the price is way too steep for what you get. It honestly doesn't seem all that sports car-ish either.
Blows the Supras interior out of the water. Still not a fan of the front grille but they did an outstanding job everywhere else!
Lmao have you been inside the new supra? Because your comment tells me you haven’t 💀
@@xxthehuskycaboosexx Imagine saying nissan interior is better than a bmw's. lol
@@chaumander9378 my boi is on some negative IQ mode 💀
@@xxthehuskycaboosexx ugly steering wheel, paddle shifters, automatic computer-mouse-looking joystick, no handbrake, Honda Civic bar going across the dash, massive screen protruding out of the dash blocking your view. Need I say more?
@@agr_ lmao those are subjective things dummy, objectively speaking every reviewer has said the supra interior is leagues ahead of the Z 💀💀💀💀
I’ll still take the 370z nismo white manual transmission, especially if it had AppleCar Play. Since test driving it I can’t get it out of my mind.
Z35 Nismo will be pretty awesome if they decide to go down that road, hopefully with the turbo engine they will be able to get more power out of it for the price compared to the NA Nismo cars before it. Or buy a Base model and for the price difference you can bolt on your own LSD, Öhlins DFVs, the inevitable Z1 full turbo back exhaust, used Akebono Z34 brakes, and some SPL Parts goodies to make it handle like it's a gokart.
zomeone did a dyno run, and the Z actually haz about 427hp
YES THE BEST REVIEWER! what is upsetting is the asking price >.< but overall a great looking car :)
Woo. Lyn got a red lipstick on 😘
The new Z (Zed;) really does look great inside and out and its powertrain is fantastic! However, the area of design that really annoys me to no end is the backup camera location. Not only is it not at least aligned with the Nissan script, it should have been integrated into the emblem above the Nissan script, similar to how the electric hatch release is below it.
That small (literally) detail annoys you no end? Really? Yikes.
It actually would look pretty cool with the louvers. Nice touch!
As someone who had put louvers on one of his previous cars, trust me when I say you don't want them. They're a PITA to keep in good shape and keep quiet. You get the wind whistling through them and they rattle in colder weather. Much better to just put window tint on and keep the smooth lines of the car.
I had my shares of Z cars when I was younger and I just love this new model with retro design and solid price point. only thing I don't like is the interior dash layout. it's too retro? looks like after market tacked on with center screen so low.
Why not CVT? lol
Consumers and Car reviews, repeatedly say no more piano black in the interior , however car designers STILL USE IT . WHY ?
Lyn 😍
It’s too bad dealerships are marking these up to high Heaven
I think the design is definitely nicer than the supra
aah yes the "old lady" Z.
When a women drives its just makes it sexy especially a sports car
It could also be an e-Power hybrid .
If that could make a Nissan Note go 0-60mph in 7 seconds, why deprive it?
Better than the Supra! Nice work, Nissan
its not better in any way than the supra, literally. no the automatic transmission, not the manual, not the handling, not the braking, not the exhaust note, not the engine, not the chassis. not the gas mileage. where have you been getting your info from? lol
Looks good in that color. I think yellow everyone else is reviewing is not as nice.
We agree. That red is a show stopper. Thanks for the comment.
