    Elvis was a loner in HS BUT After He did a singing contest HE SAID All Of a sudden He's Popular -- he said he got a standing ovation He sang - Elvis appeared in another school talent show that spring, singing "Til I Waltz Again With You." He wasn't popular before his performance, but he was after. Elvis graduated from Humes High School on June 3, 1953 - He said this in his 45 Min 1972 Interview For EOT

    Fun story on the picture where you said he was in a gang. The man beside is Bernard Lansky. Elvis bought most of his clothes from his store before he was famous up until he died. Bernard gave him his outfit free for one of his first appearances and said he could pay him back if he made it big. The Lansky shop still exists and is now located in the Peabody hotel in Memphis. If you want an Elvis shirt they stock that style. The shop is a big tourist attraction today. 😉

    • @julialesleysheppard
      @julialesleysheppard Před 8 měsíci +1

      Also, one day Elvis said to Mr Lansky that he’d like to buy his store. Mr Lansky, a canny businessman said “ no Elvis, just keep buying From my store”. Even today, you can have made the same jacket that Elvis wore for his wedding!! Bernard’s son, Hal, still runs the store. 👌💕🕺

    • @sandralybrand9425
      @sandralybrand9425 Před 8 měsíci +4

      He also told mr Lansky that when he made it big he would buy his store. Mr Lansky said no just buy your clothes from me. That's the store where mainly black people bought their clothes when performing and Elvis loved the style! Mr Lansky always made sure Elvis got the newest styles and in the)70s he brought a truck full for Elvis to choose from until he passed. He also had all his jewelry made by the local jeweler. He supported all the local businesses in Memphis.

    In high school, Elvis was extremely shy...except when he performed in the school talent show. After that, the girls noticed him more. The boys were another story. Elvis was in the bathroom, some boys decided to give him a haircut. So they had him cornered grabbing at him when in comes Red West...major football star, did a little boxing, wrestling, no one messed with him. Anyway, Red comes in and tells the boys they have to cut his hair before they can cut Elvis'. So cool. That was the beginning of their friendship and eventually Red worked with Elvis as body guard, stunt actor, and song writer. Great pics of Elvis at 18 to 23 or so. (Judy C.)

  • @MaryJones-vo5nz

    You have no idea the aura he had. Everybody said if your back was to a door you could feel him come into a room. Great music artist Jerry Reed was asked to come to Elvis recording session. Jerry gets there and Walked all the way around Elvis and says" Damn if you ain't the best looking S0B I ever seen, I kinda wish I was a girl right now. Thanks Ray he was not popular, they made fun of him and his long hair and flashy dress clothes. A group of guys cornered Elvis in the bathroom in high School and were going to cut his hair, Red West a football player came into the rest room and said "If you cut his hair you'll have to cut mine too." Guys wore buzz cuts back then. Red would become the first body guard for Elvis.

      Elvis loved football! That's why he had 3 TV's in the den so he could watch all the games at the same time and would wear his football helmet. He even had his own football team with uniforms and even cheerleaders! On Gates of Graceland Peyton Manning was looking at the things Elvis had pertaining to football. He looked at the plays that Elvis drew up when he and the guys played and also pictures of Elvis being the quarterback and how he held the ball before throwing. He couldn't believe it! He said Elvis really had an attitude for football and hard telling how far he could have gone had he pursued it seriously! There was no end to Elvis God given talents! He didn't take anything for granted and just coast along,he worked hard at everything he did,whether it was work or play,! He honestly didn't know how talented he was and was always insecure,which was ridiculous! But maybe that's drove him and made us love him to this day. Even the newer generation that has no idea what a humanitarian he was understand how much he cared about his fans and that touched your soul!❤

    My Mom said they would get so excited when they heard Elvis had a new song out and couldn’t wait to buy it. Please react to Martin Sheen talk about the impact Elvis had when he came out. Of course being in the South, she had heard him while he was Sun Records in 1954-56 before RCA in Nov 1956. I’ve never heard a teen of that era talk any different. There were very few males who didn’t like him but they were jealous.

      It wasn't just Martin Sheen who said that Elvis Presley had a huge influence on others. There are hundreds of these statements. Almost all artists of Elvis' time said that Elvis Presley influenced everyone and changed the world. As John Lennon said back then: "Before Elvis there was nothing"! Muhammad Ali said: "Elvis Presley was the greatest artist and the most beautiful person I have met in my life"! Chuck Berry: "What should I say about Elvis Presley? Elvis was the greatest and will always be the greatest, no matter who comes after Elvis"!

    You are so right. Elvis owned his people. His love for us he felt it and he gave it. Even when he was sick he gave us his all no matter what and no other performer has, does, or ever will match him. Others are good but none of them are complete. He was complete. God was in his soul and God was with him in every performance. He prayed before each show. I still love him.

    Read Elvis’ good friend’s books and Elvis wasn’t popular, looked strange and was a bit of a loner. His music teacher didn’t rate him either. Hope Elvis went back and said ……ha….told you so!!! Joking, Elvis was too polite. He got picked on a lot at school hence where his friendship with Red West started. He stuck up for Elvis against some boys in the school toilet. Red said you want him, you gotta get through me first. George Klein & Jerry Schilling’s books are so good. Red went on to betray Elvis with that book which was released 2 weeks before Elvis passed 😢

    My understanding about Elvis's high school years (from readig Peter Guralnik's biography of him) is that he played football and was increasingly popular with the girls especially toward the end of high school, but that he didn't get along well always with the jocks, who would tease him about his sideburns and his unusual clothing, the latter of which was already a bit inspired by Beale Street / his interest in African American music and styles. In the earlier years of high school I think he was a bit of a loner, apart from spending time with his first girlfriend and his family. Guralnik's biography is full of interesting details, includig about all his favorite songs by other people over the years. Anyway, thanks for the fun reaction, as usual! --Marie

    I am with you, Brother Ray! While I can appreciate the intent of the impersonators and "Tribute Artists," I have no desire to see them perform. On the few occasions I have seen one when I was channel surfing, I had to move on quickly. They don't have Elvis' spark or charisma. Even AI Elvis doesn't compare.
    BTW, for most of high school, Elvis was the outsider - the weird kid. He dressed differently, wore his hair differently, and was more involved with his music than friends. Most of the guys he hung around with were from the same projects that he lived in. Not the popular group at all. One thing he did like to do, though, was play pick-up football. He was the QB, of course, for his team. Jerry Schilling said Elvis had kind of a weird side-arm throw, but he could really zing it out there.
    Be well, Ray - love to you and the Vibe Family and Vibe Gang. KP

      I read he was kicked off of the football team because the coach demanded he cut his hair & sideburns & Elvis wasn't willing. He had his own little football team in the park. That's where he met Jerry Schilling. Another high school story - some bullies ganged up on him in the bathroom, attempting to cut his long hair. Red West (a big bruiser) came in & said they'd have to get through him before they cut Elvis' hair. The bullies scattered & Red became a life-long friend of Elvis (until a few months before his death when Red co-wrote "Elvis What Happened"). Sad ending to a life-long friendship.
