I agree, except for the smoothness of Joe Montana out of the pocket. And I'll give it to you, look what the 49er's had to work with, but still I gotta give the GOAT to the All time great. It's really back and forth with those two for me though. They're #1 and #2 respectively and in the era they played and physicality of the defenses they played vs LT and Singletary and Alzado nobody will ever touch them. One thing though, Dan played longer, and his last game was sad, but if Joe hadn't gotten hurt in 92, (and with a lot of props to Steve Young who a lot of people have forgotten) imagine what his numbers might have been. I think the saddest sight I ever saw was San Francisco losing to Dallas with Joe Fully suited up on the sidelines of the NFC championship that year. Wow, those were the days.

Steve Young was great and that is without question. From the numbers perspective you can make the case he definitely had better all around numbers during his peak seasons. It's a little disingenuous to not mention the supporting casts and their effect. How many HOFers and Pro Bowlers did Steve Young play with compared to Marino? Outside of his center Dwight Stephenson who retired 4 or 5 years into Marino's career and the Marks brothers receiving duo which flamed out pretty quick Marino had little. Defense was awful. Running game was non-existent. By contrast, Young was surrounded by HOFers and Pro Bowlers.
Marino was basically what Michael Jordan would've been had the Bulls never improved his team. There's no questioning of Marino's talent. He is regarded as the greatest pure passer of all-time by most. People mention Aaron Rodgers in that mix but I have a hard time giving credit to guys in this cupcake league where every play is a penalty benefiting the offense/QB which extends drives and thus skews the numbers. Guys like Matt Stafford have "numbers" that would be off the charts in the 80's and 90's. It's become a joke.

While 60 sounds far-fetched, he threw 48 in 1984 when defenses were alot tougher and could actually, you know... HIT a quarterback without worrying about getting flagged or suspended. So yea, if Marino played in this tissue soft era, I'd say he could throw 55 TD's a season easily.
I bet Dan Fouts could do that as well if defenses weren't allowed to defend like they did back then. The point is, Marino is right to suggest he could break the records today, because it's sadly true. The NFL won't let defenses play defense anymore, so is it any wonder QB's are now throwing 35+ TD's a season? -.-

Dan Marino is the best quarterback - a super bowl doesn’t define a players ability and devotion to excellence. Look at Dick Butkus, he never went to a super bowl and for many years the Bears sucked. Didn’t matter to Dick Butkus, he broke records nobody ever thought possible, he broke some bones 🦴 to! There’s no denying from every NFL player pole that Butkus was voted number one in at least two the being “the top 💯 toughest players in the NFL” and “the ten most feared players of all time”, I even think there was a too 100 💯 meanest players of all time. It’s always been unanimous of who the person would be and as long as there’s lots of film kept nobody will disagree. And I and many other fans believe that Dan Marino was by far the best passer of all time, his record is unmatched based on the rules of the time. I only wish he would’ve been drafted by the Bears in 1983! OMG Dan Marino on the 1985 Bears team. Five Super Bowls in a row MINIMUM. He may have not made as much yardage but it would have been the best equipped military football team in history with all the best armament.

I don't think Marino had as much game savvy as Jim McMahon, even though he was obviously a better thrower of the football than McMahon, and yes, a better quarterback than McMahon, but he wasn't a winner. A nice, fun, engaging personality, but the lack of running game behind him was his own doing. Tony Nathan was averaging about 5 yards a pop in his prime, but only getting 7-9 attempts per game, cause Marino just wanted to throw it as much as he could. That mentality never went away, even in his twilight years after the achilles tear in 93, as his body began to change, and after his arm was no longer golden.

It makes me wonder how Marino would do in this pussyifcation league now. He played in an era where you could bump and run for 10 yards, take 4 steps to the QB, the rules were changed to protect the Bradys of today. Here is a thought, how would Brady play in Marinos Era?

No one can say for sure how Brady would have handled playing QB in the 80's, but this much I do know: Brady would not have thrown for 50 TD's, won 5 Superbowls or even lasted as long as he has.
He would have also been beaten up alot more than he has, making his career at least 3-5 years shorter. Now, do I think Brady would have flamed out and not been a good QB in the 80's? Far from it. Knowing Brady's drive and heart, I believe he would have been a solid QB in that era, if not in the top 10.
HOWEVER, let's not kid ourselves about one fact. Brady doesn't have to worry about defenses constantly smashing him and that definitely makes it easier for him to do what he does. If he had to constantly worry about players like Lawrence Taylor and Reggie White breathing down his neck, I don't think he'd do as well. You've seen what happens to Brady when the heat is on. He crumbles.
Which is why if I had to give an estimated guess what his career would have been in that era, assuming he was on a decent team at least, I'd say Brady would have had a career somewhere between Phil Simms' and Dan Fouts.
Brady would be either good or very good, but it would mostly depend on the protection would have been from his O-line and how well he could adjust to the brutal defenses of the 80's. I don't doubt he could sling the ball to his WR's and makes plays, but could he withstand the beatings on any given Sunday from monster defenses like the 85 Bears and 86 Giants and still do his job?
We'll sadly never know since it's a guess at best.

In Marino's era, quarterbacks weren't coddled and protected like they are today. Dan was fortunate that he played behind some very good offensive lines so he didn't take that much punishment. Plus he had a lighting quick release (the best ever, just ask the '85 Bears). Tom Brady played most of his career under the new rules. He would've wet the bed in Marino's era.
