My wife and I do puzzles, sizes ranging from 300 - 2000. You see, she has epilepsy and ever since we started doing puzzles she appears to be much more relaxed and the amount of seizures she experiences has appeared to decrease. She still has seizures, but the average number and severity has decreased. As an added bonus we have spent many many hours chatting and having fun while doing puzzles.

Theres more there, then people realize. I have parents who collect and do springbok puzzles, and at one stage in my life going from one part of my life to the next, I didn't know what to do, and discovered after doing an mc esher puzzle of stairways in all directions, that puzzles were answering a lot of deep questions, as I talked my way through it. So more power to him. I think he's on to it.

At eighty years old my husband and I use puzzles to distract from the horror of the political news. We do 500 to 1000 piece puzzles and have completed six or seven since Thanksgiving this year alone. Nice to have offspring who feed our puzzle obsession.

I've just recently started doing puzzles again having not done them since I was young. As I approach 60 I find it very relaxing and it takes me back to when I was young. And it's good for my brain! 😁👍❤️

God bless you Paul! It took my now almost 13 yr old daughter and me over a year to finish a 500 piece puzzle. Embarrissing, I know but we finished! THAT is what counts and it is very symbolic to me. We are obviously not good at it so we screamed at this puzzle, we looked at it mean (lol), we laughed, we concentrated and... we talked! Of course we talk daily and multiple times but aside from walking together or the time spent during a car ride - this is one of the best ways of spending "talk time" OR "quiet non-verbal time" together. There were weeks and weeks where it just sat there and most of the times we just spent a "few pieces" together on it but I was determined that we see it through and I saw that my kid needed us to as well. 16 months later we finished it TODAY. It is very symbolic to our journey of the last 16 months. This puzzle became our "most hated thing to do.... together (!)" and sometimes I was alone finding a few pieces and I felt... alone...
I KNOW you are on to something with the puzzle therapy because I now think about buying another one and asking my daughter to sit with me more regular every day. Who knows... Maybe we become good at it ;)

You will never know how much you have enriched your daughter’s life by spending this time with her. I have spent almost 50 years trying to explain that the quiet time you spend with you child is far more beneficial than the big outings. The quiet talks and exchange of ideas you had with her are gold that she can bank and withdraw later as she parents her own child.

I didn't see a link for his puzzles. I'm sure puzzle therapy isn't for everyone. My husband never does puzzles. His work is constant problems that have to be solved fast. So he doesn't lingering over a puzzle. But my sister, brother and I felt comfort doing puzzles after our mother died in a tragic accident. I think its therapeutic because it is somewhat meditative but also solves "A" problem even though "The" problem we are suffering from is unsolvable in reality.

I get it now. J-puzzles have taught me that they open a door to another place. My mother-in-law was 97 years old and living alone for almost 30 years since her husband passed away and she was doing fine with all her daily activities. Cooking, driving her car, and seeing friends. All of this life-stye ended abruptly in 2020 when Covid-19 hit. Suddenly she could no longer see her friends and her car broke down and she stopped driving. We were not expecting anything when one day, my wife called her on the phone as she did every day and NO Answer. Panic set in when this happens and we tried the phone 10 more times hoping to get an answer, we finally jump in the car and drive to her condo which luckily is only 4 miles from our house. We tried to think of finding her dead on the floor, but you just cannot shut your mind off when it wants to go astray. Each traffic light seemed to be an eternity, but finally, we stuck the key into her front door and there she was, staring at the phone in her hand and she said I did not know how to use it. To be continued

I can understand how puzzles soothe a restless mind, any mind, in fact. But I really am surprised to see people would pay for a "therapist" to do one with then. In a way, that'd be annoying to have someone there and be forced to communicate, even nonverbally, while I'm trying to relax and focus. I guess extroversion and the need to be with others is a very dominant trait in most people.
And the fact that he'd be able to charge more with a therapist license, to me, just proves the industry is mostly quackery. It's why people go to therapists for years on end. It doesn't work any better than just having a friend who listens. It doesn't resolve anything. It just makes you feel like you matter to somebody.

I can totally relate to the therapy aspect of jigsaws, but I can't do them 'with' someone - that is plain annoying for me. Music on, a cup of tea and a big jigsaw is my solution to anxiety.
