Has Anybody Seen My Gal?" was a popular song of the 1920s, first recorded by The California Ramblers in 1925, on their self-titled album The California Ramblers. The simple, four-verse song remained popular during and after World War II and has endured as a representation of 1920's culture and of the experiences of a soldier coming home after an extended military stay.
The song has been covered by many artists, including Mitch Miller and actress/model/designer Milla Jovovich in a cover called "Has Anybody Seen My Girl? [1], and was used as the theme song for The Ina Ray Hutton Show in the 1950's.[2]
Because songs of that era were often passed on and performed without being truly recorded, there are conflicting sources on who originally composed "Has Anybody Seen My Gal?", as the song went through many adjustments and had lyrics and verses added or removed several times. Some sources credit Percy Weinrich (music) and Jack Mahoney (lyrics) [3] as writing the song in 1914, but for the song in its most popular form, credit is given to Ray Henderson (music) and two lyricists - Samuel M. Lewis and Joseph Widow Young - usually credited with writing the version that was recorded by The California Ramblers in 1925.

Born Raymond Brost in Buffalo, New York, Henderson moved to New York City and became a popular composer in Tin Pan Alley. He was one third of a successful songwriting and music publishing team with Lew Brown and Buddy De Sylva from 1925 through 1930, responsible for several editions of the revue called George White's Scandals and such book musicals as Good News, Hold Everything!, and Follow Thru. After De Sylva's departure, Henderson continued to write with Brown through 1933, then worked with other partners.
Henderson's biggest hit songs included "That Old Gang of Mine", "Annabelle" (both 1923), "Bye Bye Blackbird", "Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue", "I'm Sitting on Top of the World" (all 1925), "The Varsity Drag" (1927), "You're The Cream In My Coffee" (1928), "Button Up Your Overcoat", "You Are My Lucky Star" "I'm A Dreamer, Aren't We All", "Keep Your Sunny Side Up" (1929), "The Thrill Is Gone", and "Life Is Just a Bowl of Cherries" (1931).
Henderson also worked as an accompanist to song and dance acts in Vaudeville. His last Broadway show was a resuscitation of the Ziegfeld Follies,one of several put on after Ziegfeld's death. Henderson's, in 1943, had the longest run of any Follies at 553 performances. - Hudba

My dad and his brothers used to sing and play this song when I was a little boy. I'm now 77. What memories. Makes me cry.
You were closer to this songs original time then most of us were. That is something I find extremely amazing, and it's what makes the elderly such a treasure. God bless you, sir. I only hope current events and modern day music and art will be worthy enough for me to recollect when I'm your age.

My grandmother was born in 1911 and was exactly 5 foot 2 and blue-eyed. My grandfather used to say this song was written about her. They were the sweetest couple, so in love and devoted to each other even late into their lives. I miss them and always think of them when I hear this song.

Same year as my grandma in CA. My pampa left before her but she helped raise me, so did he. My mother left me with them but Oh the Memories that led me to Jesus and after, baptism! Church camp and spreading the Good News!!! I became a child of God and have been held even since I His hand!

Yeahh same! The time feels *slightly more innocent. This music was made with the intentions for people to dance to it. It's got that 'jig' and it was almost like made by "grown kids-" happy and hopeful. People who saw the world not as fast paced as it is now, but knew there was something gleaming in the air, as industrialization was not something anyone had ever seen (not as fast paced as it was in this historical era). The possibilities were endless, and people just wanted to dance. A time of expression, indifferent to people's opinions. I love this song, and I know exactly what you mean by that "happy feeling" it gives, which makes me just want to dance, and think of the endless possibilities in my day and for my life. X)

Go out now and find a house built in the 1920's and imagine the builders there going up & down their ladders in time as they sing "... could she love, could she woo, could she, could she, could she coo" Look closer! Using the whole tone scale on the V7 chord along with the horns/cymbal arrangement makes it really fun. Learned at age 15 in 1978 playing 🎹in Wolverines in MN. Monk was aware of this song obviously writing 4 in 1!
I have no idea how this piano score ended in my grand parent's inventory in Africa. I found it and played when I was 10 years old. There were many old tunes to play to fight boredom at home (Like "Why do Robin Sing in Decmber" and "Over the Rainbow").

Im 20 years old and stuck with the pandemic and im curious how good the past music. And guess what im not disappointed. How unfair the world sometimes because our old grandma or grandpa have this and have contentment in life. Meanwhile fast forward to 2020 we have a lot of stuffs like cellphones or gadgets but still not contended. What a music . It gives me this type of thoughts hehe

To people wondering the relationship of this song with Lady Gaga’s documentary:
Lady Gaga is 5”2”. This is very short for an adult woman. Yet most people think of Lady Gaga as this larger-than-life extreme, alien-diva personality.
The point of the film was to show that she’s indeed extreme, but she’s a grounded traditionalist at her core.
And it’s really just that she wants to appreciate the small day-to-day connections with other human beings. It’s not specifically based on this song, it’s just a clever reference.

After reading the quote above from Wikipedia - I had no idea one songwriter composed all those classic songs. They were too far back for me to know about. Bye Bye Blackbird and Button Up Your Overcoat are 20th century classics. I actually played Bye Bye Blackbird when I started playing in a youth marching band in the 5th grade in the mid-60s, so it was still in the air then.
