@@labellavita12 Yep, correct. She already did The Little Mermaid and Tarzan before she was advised/urged by not only Lea but also other colleagues in the music industry to audition in Miss Saigon, and she heed.
Rachelle Ann actually didn't audition for The Little Mermaid. The director picked her and said that among young biriteras in the Philippines Rachelle has the clearer and clean voice. But she doesnt have proper training at all before she went to Ms. Saigon. Her voice is really expensive.
This performance is from the 25th Anniversary concert of MISS SAIGON. Lea was 18 when she first played Kim in MISS SAIGON, so she is 43 here. Rachelle Ann Go is 15 years younger than Lea. The song is arranged slightly differently from the way it's done in the show and of course, Lea isn't singing it the way she originally sang it in the show (as a virginal 17-year-old Vietnamese girl).
I will say that Lea has great vocal chemistry with lots of singers. I'm a big fan of a lot of her collaborations. You should check out Lea and Rachelle Ann Go singing "I Know Him So Well" (in 2019 - 5 years after this 25th anniversary concert), Lea and Josh Groban singing "All I Ask of You" and "The Prayer" (I'd like to see you do both songs including their banter in-between), Lea and Brad Kane recording the original "A Whole New World" and then singing the song 23 years later on Good Morning America, Lea and Michael Ball singing "A Little Fall of Rain" from the 10th anniversary LES MISERABLES concert, Lea and Liz Callaway singing "I Still Believe" in Lea's 2005 Carnegie Hall concert.
these kind of singers were so talented even before formally trained. also, Filipino singers are musical chameleons yet so humble. they gracefully match up with other musical artists whether a band or an orchestra or another singer. they don't see it as competition, they work well with other artists...amazing!
Lea still manages to make me tear up whenever I hear her singing content from Miss Saigon or Les Mis. She is so amazing.
Lea is such a gem. I got the chance to see her in Miss Saigon in the Philippines in year 2000 and what a performance. Hope I could see her perform again live, even on concerts.
Rachelle Ann Go began as a pop star in the Philippines and moved on to musical theater with a little coaxing from the original Kim herself, Lea Salonga who played the title role in Miss Saigon in 1989 at the West End and then, on Broadway. Rachelle played the lead bar girl, Gigi van Trahn at the West End revival of the musical in 2014 and played Fantine in Les Miserables in 2015 also in the UK. Rachelle later played the role of Eliza Schuyler in the West End production of Hamilton from 2017-19. Lea Salonga continues to do solo concerts internationally and performs on Broadway during theater seaon.
The definitive Kim. Nothing beats Lea in this role. She sets the bar so high.

An iconic song from the musical, Miss Saigon. I had the opportunity to see the Broadway version of Miss Saigon.
Ms. Rachelle Ann Go is one of the current Filipina singers who has left an indelible imprint on the world stage for her singing abilities and is considered an international Musical theatre star.
She has also performed in various hit musicals in the Philippines, London's West End, and Broadway. Her debut was in The Little Mermaid, playing the role of Ariel in 2011, for which she won the Best Actress award from Broadway World Philippine Awards; and another in 2013 for Tarzan, playing the role of Jane Porter. Go's theater career continued as she was cast in the 2014 West End revival of the hit musical Miss Saigon, for the role of Gigi Van Tranh. Following this, she was cast in the 30th-anniversary staging of Les Misérables in the role of Fantine. She then made her Broadway debut reprising the role of Gigi in the Broadway revival of Miss Saigon in March 2017. Rachelle Ann Go played the role of Eliza Hamilton in the original West End production of Hamilton by Lin-Manuel Miranda. She was specially invited to perform at the 2019 World Food Prize Laureate Award Ceremony, held in the magnificent Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines on October 17, 2019. Please do check out on Lani Misalucha the Asia Nightingale, when Mariah Carey held a concern here in Manila, they supposed to have a face off, they will sing “When You Believe" the concert pushed thru but the duet didnt, when Mariah Carey learn that Lani Misalucha has a 4-5 octave vocal range and has the same whistle register, Mariah opted to remove the duet with Lani Misalucha, please do check on her and you will know why(?), she is one of my favorite singer here in the Philippines 😊😊

Btw, Lea Salonga was the original Miss Saigon won Tony Awards while Rachel Ann Go did Miss Saigon in 2014, I think, and won best actress in Broadway.. The Gigi who sang with Lea in the original of this song was also a filipina
Rachelle didn't win an award on broadway, not even nominated. The one that was nominated in the Tony's for the Revival was Eva. and yes Lea won the Tony and Olivier Awards which is like Tony in the Uk and so many more.

In 2000 Lea was 29! Already over 10 years since she originated the role of Kim! This concert was 2014 - 25 years after the original Miss Saigon. Lea is 43 here.
Lea started young in musicals. She played Annie when she was just a little girl; pretty sure there’s a YT vid of it.
Lea’s first time performing professionally was age 7 in The King and I (not a lead, but a tiny featured part). Lea’s first lead was Annie at age 9 and she did the show again at age 12. I am betting that the vids floating around of Lea in Annie are from the later production, though Lea did win much acclaim for her first time in the lead role.
I wish you could have seen all of Lea’s portion of this 25th anniversary concert. It took place after a performance of MISS SAIGON. There is a great reveal to start it. The 2nd number was this one. Note: right where you ended the video Lea said, “OK. Now back to me!” And then Lea introduces her original leading man (Simon Bowman), they start to sing “The Last Night of the World,” and then the revival leads come out to join them. There’s a bit more but I won’t spoil it in case someone can send you the video!!!
Josh you made mention of Rain, cover band for Beatles. There is a Filipino counterpart and I swear it won't disappoint. They are called REO brothers they cover mostly Beatles songs but also does bee gees, dire straits, beach Boys etc. Check them out!!!

Lea is priceless combination of beautiful face, personality and pristine voice. Rachel has great voice just did not get to know her enough as Lea because Lea was almost my time and maybe that's why I am biased thinking Lea would be really almost impossible to follow. I lost track on Ms Saigon sequel getting other Filipino talents. Hope they got to win too. Lea should be a national gem of a singer. Millions knew her and really brought pride to our country.
You have to commend how healthy their techniques are. If you're going to sing 8 shows a week, that's how one should sing. These two can belt out those high notes especially Rachell Ann Go who can go supersonic with her whistle note, but they chose the healthy way to sing and that helps in preserving their voices.

Lea played as Kim in the span of 10 years on and off so she was too familiar of this role, making her portrayal so effective plus she started at 17 which made her innocent in real life. She didn't do any tour production for Kim just in the Westend, broadway and just the Philippines because that's where she is from then closed the broadway production in New York.

I know that it's been stated already in the comments that Lea Salonga was the OG Kim for Miss Saigon there is a documentary out there called Finding Kim which goes through the journey the producers/crew went through to find just the right person for the role, eventually landed on Lea, Thus beginning her rise to becoming a Broadway/West End LEGEND

Oh, Rachelle ♥ And I love not only that Lea didn't hold back her own reaction and appreciation but that, later in the song where her part echoes Rachelle's, she let that moment alone and didn't pick it up or compete with it, as others might have (not sure I'm getting my thought across well; sorry). And we got to share it with them!
In this Siilver Anniversary tribute show, Lea and Rachelle were singing counterpoint assuming two different characters, both working as competing prostitutes in a bar but agreeing on how their American clients can get them out of Saigon. Rachele was given the license to have her "pop" music training come out JUST for this show. Lea was invited back for this show to sing her original role in the musical M8ss Saigon, being the original leading lady.

You know Lea’s choice to take her place is Sarah Geronimo but she was busy so Rachel took the place. Lea won the Tony award which is I believe the highest award for an artist.
To take her place? She's always supportive of ANY Filipino artist so don't single it out so she was also happy that it was Eva who is half Fil who got the role for the revival. Like passing a crown to a fellow Fil and she was eyeing Rachelle even before Miss Saigon when she saw her performed in Little Mermaid, the reason why she asked Rachelle Ann to audition. Don't give out wrong information.

Trivia: Rachel used to look up to/idolized Lea. She used to be a belter and auditioned for the role of Kim in Miss Saigon but she was not accepted at first because of her diction. She continued rehearsing and finally, convinced by Lea, she "is" reaping what she'd sown for the longest time!

Her age is issue, they want the real 18 yrs old kim. Rachelle was already 28 that was 2014. Because they really want rachelle part of the cast they emailed her to audition in london as gigi.
