In 1999 or so my partner and I (both literature teachers) made our pilgrimage to Bar Hemingway at the Ritz. It was our next to last day and, unfortunately, our wardrobe (such as it was) did not quite fit the setting. We entered through the front doors and the fellow who greeted us could not have been more charming. He began with a quizzical "hello gentleman, may I help you?" I suspect he knew we did not have reservations for the suites. However, when we told him we were American teachers and wanted to have a martini at the Bar Hemingway before we left, he quickly and without question directed us down a long hallway to the bar. And there we enjoyed a perfect gin martini in the presence of Papa's spirit. It was a beyond perfect experience!
