Love the sound of this sketchbook! I bet the feeling of drawing on the page with the crinkly sounds is so nice. I feel so inspired by how freely you began this and looking at it as an everything book is so lovely and must get rid of that layer of hesitation before making!

Thank you!!! The layer hesitation can pop up, but sometimes I might skip a page until I don’t care about it anymore 😂

Your sketches starting at 10:55 would make beautiful journal covers! All your art is beautiful, but those drawings had such movement in them. 🤩

The name of the journal is called the oak. It also mentions tree rings in the description. So while the onion cross-section makes sense, I think it actually is an oak.

Ahh sketchbooks like this would make me go insane with all the transparency, but when you use it it looks phenomenal! And of course, the obligatory "ooooh the crinkly noises!!" XD It sounds so good! You've also inspired me to go get my dip pens out.
The sketchbook is coming together really nicely! You're right when you say that the overlays of all the drawings give some really interesting effects. Sometimes the pages have a totally different feel or energy depending on the page it's going over, like that one of the girl in the thistles. When you turned her over the page of the lavender splotches, it looked like dappled shadows. So beautiful.
It looks like it'd be a very useful book for someone who enjoys overlaying pages to refine drawings, like layers in photoshop. Or for an animator.

I really enjoy what you are doing in the journal. I call that style Art Journaling. Using colors, textures, and symbols as well as words allows me to express emotions better than just straight words or only colors/shapes do. You look like you have had lots of practice at this.
    Thank you for the inspiration!

I love my Onion Skin Journal. I have made it the journal of the year. I was also amazed at its versatility with watercolor, ink and stamps. Just great! The CommonPlace book was used by Thomas Jefferson. That's where I first heard about it. I put all my images and inspiring quotes in it. I only put words and images on on one side. Love it.

This sketchbook/journal looks like too much fun, it's the thin crinkly crackly paper for me. It's like the phyllo dough of papers! I always thought I was such a weirdo as a kid (well, I am a total weirdo but that's besides the point) because I loved getting my hands on a bible or a big dictionary just to turn those super fine pages and hear a crinkle! What the hell? Why is it so enticing? hahaha

Wonderful, Sophie! I like that crinkling sound. I also liked considering the view thru the paper. Is it fun for you to consider how the various pages merge and separate, showing one image through another? There must be a proper art term for this diaphanous technique. Lovely. Thanks! 💜💜💜

Hi; I'm Italian and, just to avoid a typical mistake of translation, the meaning of the renaissance term "florilegium" has actually nothing to do with flowers, at least not directly, even less with a flower collection (herbarium).
It was used, and still is, to indicate a collections of important writings, documents and letterature masterpices.
The word comes from "floris" (flower) and "legĕre" (to read) and the word flower here is only used because in medieval vulgar language, the term "fior da fiore" used by Dante Alighieri in his Divina Commedia, meant and still means "to pick the best of the best" like the acting of picking the most beautiful flowers for a bouquet.
The incorrect use of the term probably comes from the beautifull flower installation of contemporary British artist Rebecca Louise Law which actually uses the term "Florilegium" as a wordplay, a pun.
Sorry for the pedantry remark but it hurts me so much anytime I see my mother language innocently misused :-)

    • @SophieMcPike
      @SophieMcPike  Před 5 měsíci +1

Hello! Ooh yes I did read about that during my research! I went deep into it, haha! The initial definition is beautiful and interesting. I think it still relates to the story of the artwork. Language does evolve but I really value you for clearing this up! There’s so much I should have included in my voice over- and I did intend to mention the history in a better way, but I don’t write my scripts, I just start chatting and I leave stuff out because I go on tangents and forget to circle back!! Eek!
Any way, thanks for your comment, I love it! Language is fascinating!
