Found your channel a few weeks back and subscribed. It's been a blast watching you fish where I grew up. My biggest catfish came from that stretch of the James,,, back in the 80's. Keep up the great videos.
You should try the chickahominy river in summer time, tons of gar more than I've seen in the James or anywhere really. We weren't fishing for gar but my buddy and i had dozens of takes and landed 2 in one day. With a gar rig we could have caught so many. How do you light that stealth craft boat? I'm looking for a good shallow water boat, so far the towee boats have my attention

great vid. lengthen your fly 2" to get more wrap up. try shorter vibrating strips too
Great video ! Excited to see ya figure it out. I wonder what makes them so difficult, hard mouths ? Or do their long snouts knock the hook free with a head shake ?
Don't unwind all the rope into individual strands...leave some together and then tie little knots in the end...you will do much better.

Great video... I've been struggling to keep the gar on my rope fly as well. Let me know if you find a better type of fly. Liked and subbed to support a fellow Youtubing angler!
Tiny treble hooks and red felt/yarn tied into the fly have helped me keep on the couple of gar I've caught. It's hard to keep those teeth locked in there. Difficult fish to catch for sure
Maybe a touch of bite me scent . . . . you said, "He sniffed it."
