  • Welcome to the start of my DIY (do it yourself), garden makeover project. In this vlog, I am sharing the before and after visuals, so you can clearly see what my vision for the garden is and what a complete mess it is now.
I am also documenting the start of the DIY work, which is finding the correct ground level for my new patio, setting out a new retaining wall and steps, and finally digging the footings, and filling them with the correct concrete mix.

I think of it as a "spirit level" ever since learning what the British call it. Much better descriptor.

Handsome young man with building knowledge, what is not to like. I will give you a good advice, follow it or don't, obviously that's totally up to you. People that watch videos on youtube watch for very different reasons. One group of people watch these kind of videos to get some kind of psychological satisfaction of watching people work or something being created without having to lift a finger, the same audience that would watch those famous "We build you a whole new house while you were gone" TV shows. I am in this category. I believe most of us do NOT watch this kind of content for the instructions, on how to build something, we just want to see the before and after, the makeover. Another group of audience are the people that are actually planning on or in the process of making a DIY project themselves, and is looking for instructions in detail, of how to build something specific. In my humble opinion, it is VERY important for you to establish what you want your audience to be.
When you put "makeover" in the little, a before and after is expected in the content. You could do a makeover of the patio, but it is expected that we will see a before and after of the patio in that video. We live in a world of no patience and people want to see the hard work sped up, with much explanation included.
    definitely

You can just bump up or grind down when you lay rather than spend half a day getting the footing bang on 😁 welcome to the long format game dude 👍

Yeah suppose I could. I am happy to dig footings instead of grind blocks though. I did that all last year, you should have seen the amount of dust on the neighbours car 😂

@@scott_diy haha no the bump or grind is a bricklaying term and refers to the gauge of the mortar. So for example the first course if you bump up then the bed might end up 15mm and if you grind down then it might be as thin as say 5mm. That's how the bricklayers level up if the footings are off.

@@THE-AIDEN-PROJECT ah that’s great! I will likely end up doing that anyway. My footings are level, but they won’t match the new height of the patio without some ‘bumping and grinding’. See this is why I watch your content to learn this stuff

What software did you use to design your garden? Great inspiration

Hi Scott, great job, you can’t get more level than that! Looking forward to watching the progression.
Just an observation, I find my eyes are all over the place trying to follow you when you talk to camera as you tend the swing the camera a lot 🤪 and it makes me feel a bit seasick. Just wondered if that was your intended style?
