Hey Phil! You got this up before WhoCulture! Nice!
I get that you don’t like the “reset button” stuff and that the importance of Ruby’s mom was nothing more than than that the Doctor & Ruby invested her with being important, but to me, it works. It’s all part of how Russel views words as having a magic, an existence, outside of what they refer to. Words conjure, they create, they convey. They don’t just have meanings, they are meaning themselves. “The death of Death is life” becomes kind of a spell that the Doctor casts as they travel backwards through time, undoing what Sutekh has done.
One thing that you missed out on is the language of knots from the goblins becoming how the Doctor is able to hold the Memory TARDIS together. It wasn’t called out verbally in the episode but the way he connected specific bits to other bits has the same kind of feeling as the goblin ship held together with strings.
Good review! Look forward to the next video!

    My biggest questions:
    - Why didn't they just go to 2046 right at the start of the series?
    - Why did it actually snow?
    - Why bother pointing at the sign? Nuns didn't see her so no one would know she was naming her
    - What happened to Sutekh when the TARDIS was split?
    - What happened to the memory TARDIS?
    - 14 and Donna must have been turned to dust, wonder what he thought of that lol
    - Sutekh was mystified by this random woman even though he could see ALL of time and space. Why couldn't he see 2046 when the mum took the DNA test? Surely he could find out who she was
-If the Toymaker was outside the universe until WBY with the Salt, when did he ever have chance to 'play a game' with Sutekh? He didn't want to go up against the one who waits, who “was there in the dark”, but Sutekh wasn't in the dark, he was on the TARDIS lol

Sutekh clinging to the Tardis for all of those years is troubling.
E--space, various returns to Gallifrey, the Guardians, Logopolis, the encounter with House in a pocket universe, Rose's world etc etc. ; are we to believe that Sutekh remained undetected throughout all of this? Very odd.
Are we also to believe that E-space, Rose's World and other parallel/pocket universes were all infected by Sutekh's 'gift of death'? If so, I fail to see how any of them were revived, given how difficult it is to access them from our universe.
It was a nice idea in principal but doesn't make much sense in the broader scheme of things.

I don't mind Ruby's mum being just a normal person, but it is a bit of an annoyance that they set it up as being something really big, that thinking about her made it snow, that Sutekh was so curious about the answer that he left the doctor alive long enough to stop him, and it was just some woman called Louise. That sort of meta bit where Russel tries to tell us it only mattered so much because we cared about it so much, but we only cared about it because he made it seem such a big deal. I also was sat there thinking that it seems a bit unnecessary to have the whole universe killed when we know it'll just come back, it's harder to get invested when you know the stakes are meaningless in the end. I did enjoy it a lot but the resolution wasn't good.

Something to do with the fact that because the Doctor and Ruby BELIEVED there was something special about her that so that… err… cause her to not be seen by Sutekh. The power of thought and words and belief. RTD seems to like that as a theme, I’m not keen.

    • @trekman10

This is what breaks the episode for me. Power of words isn't an answer, because the words only came *after* the experience, which is what started it all. Everything about it being important came *after* so it doesn't make sense that all that was for nothing.

Mrs Flood may hang about for next series, and be kept for Gatwa's finale moments.. 2-3 yrs from now. RTD may not have all the details worked out.. but he may have a strong ending planned, and will make things up as he goes along towards it.. expanding or contracting plots as needed.. It's a bit like the Watcher who was in 4th Doctor's final story.. Also he (RTD) ever got to fully explore `the mother' of the Doctor (briefly hinted at in End of time -pt2) so Mrs Flood may be RTD's wish fulfilment of some relative of The Doctor.. or even one from his own native planet! Also the name.. might be just a distraction, or perhaps RTd might get biblical and go for some sort of Ark for the finale story of Gatwa (2-3 seasons from now).

But, we were shown certain elements throughout the entire season that have to do with Ruby's very nature or origins (things like the snow, the carol song, the Doctor's memory of that night changing etc), which were meant to lead us to believe that she wasn't exactly a normal human. These were deliberate scriptwriting choices that made us think she was special.. And then, those things were never actually explained. Setting up red herrings is okay and all, but then when the twist eventually comes, it's just writing 101 to explain the red herrings in some other way, even retroactively. But here they just, didn't. The only bit they even tried to explain was the pointing, and even that explanation was a bit dumb tbh.
We did get a few mentions of 73 Yards, more than I was expecting, but they didn't exactly make this better, since again, it wasn't actually explained or important to the overall mystery. Like, it's cool that the TARDIS perception filter apparently works from that same distance, and nice touch that Ruby sort-of remembers what happened to her in the alternate timeline, but it wasn't actually important and didn't lead to anything in the end.
I thought the Memory TARDIS being used and explained some more was very cool, and I also liked the idea of Sutekh latching onto the TARDIS all the way back in the 4th Doctor's era and being around for this entire time (though, it does raise a lot of questions about how he survived and why he waited so long lol). I also loved the apocalyptic vibe of the episode, seeing the universe destroyed again was very reminiscent of Flux, but in a very cool way.. I especially liked the sequence with Mel, and the idea of memory itself dying; and also loved the Doctor's reaction to the death wave and his scene with the random kind lady.
However, I do wish the solution in the end, was a bit better than just... Dragging Sutekh through the time vortex with a bit of rope. Like, Rowan is absolutely adorable and I'm glad he liked it, but yeah, I'm not really sure how or why that even worked lol. I don't have a problem with it being silly solution, as it is DW after all.. But I mean, in the internal logic of the show itself, what even made the Doctor realise that it would work? Or, if he knew all along that it could, why did he need to wait so long until so many planets were destroyed before trying it? It seemed like a bit of an oversight. Like you've said, RTD has this issue a lot. Script-wise, it was a last-minute solution that reminded me of the Last of the Time Lords ending, which I think we all know is considered RTD's worse finale for a reason. It seems like whenever RTD gives us very high stakes, he forgets to think of a way out and consider an actual solution until the very last second, and then there's not enough screen time left to actually construct one that makes sense within the narrative, so he just finds the quickest easy fix he can and sticks with it.
Also, I liked the idea of an ending scene with the Doctor and Ruby, but honestly, the season wasn't long enough and didn't give us enough of them together, for me to buy that they have such a deep, unbreakable bond. It made their goodbye feel a bit overdramatic, but IDK.. maybe it's just me. I am happy that Ruby is coming back for S2, cause I do like Millie and her dynamic and chemistry with Ncuti, I just could have honestly done without the scene of them saying goodbye, or maybe replaced it with a more lighthearted one where they just decide that Ruby should have a break and stay with her family for a while.
Basically, I loved the vibe of the episode, I liked a lot of the character moments we got, the acting and emotional stakes.. But the story itself in terms of the mystery and overall plot, was a bit of a let down sadly.

You were probably one of the few people to address the payoff and the Ex-Machina stuff. And one of the few that were pretty spot-on imo. The beats of the season were basic RTD pitfalls. I felt the penultimate episode was really solid but this finale flipped Sutekh's character motivations and the stakes of the story upside down. Sutekh knew basically most of the stuff about the Doctor (probably just as much as the Great Intelligence, maybe even more) and still chose not to act. He basically played a Davros plan on us and he still wouldn't kill or capture the Doctor even though he had all the cards. He basically folded for no specified reason.
Sutekh even let Ruby pull him like a pup... and he's a big dog with godly powers! Russell then went on to make a life/death parallel and he loves doing a lot of these neatly wrapped meta dialogs that make you feel so compelled to watch but when you look closer, the Doctor also folded. Sutekh is not dead as some believe, he was definitely spared because of necessary death. That seems a compelling argument if Sutekh wasn't aware of so much stuff, even how to kill the Doctor... It was definitely a toss after such a fantastic build-up. Even Ruby's story was completely demystified but we still don't know what Sutekh waited for so long or what made Ruby so important. I'm fine with ordinary too, but it felt... odd. The departure reminded me of Ben and Polly, it was different from the usual stuff but I felt it was rushed for the amount of investment we had (and it was 2005 beat by beat).
Positive points: The voice of Sutekh, that's still music to my ears after all these years. There's still some mysticism about the old neighbor who is apparently wise in her own weird ways (and has plans?), I'm a bit invested in that. Mel was definitely fire in these two episodes. The 73 Yards stuff and the TARDIS from the spin-off were interesting puzzle pieces, not sure if they jelled 100% but I was somewhat fine with it. The leash irony was also funny but I was with you on the Ex-Machina conclusion. Expectations from previous teases: Probably some multiverse stuff. I also expect Rogue's story to develop into another cliché waiting to happen.

@@CulturePhilter I Initially thought of something dramatic like Rose Tyler (we still haven't had that one), but then I took some time to rethink that and there's not enough juice for that in three seasons, so I think it's probably going to be a mix between Captain Jack and River Song, perhaps a fling among strangers and not exactly a couple. Idk, but there's going to be a cliché for sure... maybe the library stuff or something else. I'm sure he will return in strange circumstances but not the exact same ones like you said.
For what Rogue did right, I still think it's a bit out of character for the Doctor to just go deep into a relationship with a stranger he knows very little within 5-10 minutes after knowing them. No other Doctor moved that fast unless they were drunk with regeneration energy or they were forced into it. Even 13 was slow to trust Yaz with her hearts.

Martha probably would've done the same if she wasn't aware of being in a rebound relationship. Doesn't mean the Doctor wasn't interested, but it's just not his schtick and he usually stays by it... The 10th Doctor, despite his flair and hot action was still a Doctor reluctant to make the first move, just like 9th, 11th, 12th and 13th. Maybe this stuff with 15 is new, but it's such a big departure from the usual that makes you question if it's still the same character. Then again, the Doctor got divided into 2 halves so maybe he doesn't have as much holding him back, idk.

As for the episode, it was all a bit meh if I'm honest. I did feel Ruby's mum not being special was a bit of a let down, given how hyped she'd been for six whole months! I loved the final episode, while yes it had flaws, I still liked it. I didn't mind Sukkah's death as he did achieve what he needed to achieve and I guess maybe Sukkah was worried about Ruby's mother as maybe he thought she would've some way to stop him, before realising that it was a trick that she wasn't some big god. I didn't mind Ruby's mother being a regular person, I just felt she was too accepting, idk I would find it weird that a random person claims that they're missing a child. She also must not have any family if there were no DNA matches on the database. Overall a good episode, maybe if there wasn't such a big emphasis on Ruby's mother more people would been more accepting or felt less underwhelmed.

I could just about get on board with using Sutekh's "gift" to undo it and destroy him but it was badly shown. Him being dragged and slowly disintegrating with his dust sparking lights in the vortex would have worked better for what it was explained as.
And Ruth getting a nice ending was done well except for the explanation of her being left mysteriously etc as being just normal overhyping. I feel there's scope for those events to have been "doctored" by something else. Or it's a needless plothole.

So, convoluted is the word I had in mind, when I was watching this finale... and convoluted is a word that I've heard most reviewers use....
It felt like there was a longer edit of this but. Obviously cut down for time but, I feel like they chopped out the wrong bits?
I also think that there is a wee bit of cognitive dissonance going, within the who-gang (?... OK, I'll work on a cool collective term for us all....). What I mean is, we've all spent the past 8 weeks speculating and theorising about how things will wrap up.... apart from the "triad=tardis", "sue-tech" and maybe a few of us saying that Ruby's mum wasn't some kind of mythical being... none of it came to fruition... which, if you remember all the fuss around the last jedi and how Rian Johnson tried to create a movie that aligned with not a single fan theory, left us all feeling a little bit empty inside.... Well, me anyway haha...
I've been well entertained throughout this series, as I am a sucker for variety, which we got in spades! But, this shouldn't have been called "empire of death" but rather "plot holes: the musical... granted, it needed a couple of show tunes to make it a musi... never mind....
I think the best thing we can take away from this finale is what the Doctor learned, with regards to travelling through space and time just for s**ts and giggs.... ?
I'm also left thinking that Rusty D milked Disney for all he could.... and who can blame him (the faceless greed machine should be exploited haha)
I did get the feels, toward the end though :.)
Mrs Flood, at the end, made up for a "convoluted" and "convenient" finale (there must have been metal on that tardis they were in!!??) Because Anita Dobson brought a smile to my face, with her creepy Joker smile and her "nighty night".... classic :)

And you say I dunno, and they go 'come on, magic tricks need engagement from the audience or you won't be tricked' and you guess, and guess, and they keep saying "maybeeee" but they never give you anymore information. Then they open their hands and go 'tada, there's nothing in my hand' and you go 'where was the trick?' And they say "I had a coin in my hand. I made it disappear." And you say "...I didn't see any coin." And they say "That's because it disappeared." And you're like 'so there's nothing in your hand.' "Yeah but it could have been all sorts of things." "But it wasn't."

Mrs Flood at the end left a bad taste in my mouth.
They played "who is that stranger?" with rubys mum and the big reveal was "i dunno, some stranger". And then tried to upsell me with a second "who is that stranger". The last thing I wanted was the promise of more shallow teasing, bad upsell.
If i can flip a coin and she can be either Santa or No One, whats the difference? Whats the point? The problem with a "slow burn" as RTD put it is its likely to feel unrewarding and shallow all the way up to the reveal and now theres every precedent that final reveal wont be rewarding either.
Much like with Last Jedi, whether you like the idea on paper or not, I find it counter-intuitive: its not rewarding people for paying attention, which is a bad plan for season one trying to get new people in. This episode is absolutely on par with RTDs first era.
It’s suffers from same weakness he had back then, rushed endings and narrative resets. But also had the strengths he had in that era, the personal character stories that pull on the heart strings - like Ruby reuniting with her birth mum here.

So sutek been hugging the tardis for a long time but what happened when the tardis got split in 2? And what jack was clinging to the tardis som season ago.
Why did sutek wait this long?
Why does sutek care for a random no body just because it Irritated him?
How is ruby making it snow when we know she is ordinary?
Why did rubys mum hidden from the god of death?
Why did rubys mum point at the road sign like a Dementor. Like there is no one their?
Why is the last woman in the desert still alive? How did the doctor find her? Why metal? Doest anyone carry a watch? House Keys on them

The Doctor not only defeated his biggest enemy by putting a lead around its neck he took it walkies through the time Vortex and in theory he just made the BIGGEST red button yet.
Death Vs Death = Life,. Oh look gallifrey is back as is the Master and everyone else he wants to bring back, Repair the Flux destruction.
I knew he would dangle Mrs Flood, On being restored called him a Clever boy.
after wearing the same outfit as Clara and apparently another Classic companion.
He overplayed the Ruby story he made it appear so supernatural but its backfired.
RTD writes finales like the Family from Home alone he crams everything in.
He dropped hints about the Kind woman... hmmm the memory TARDIS had loads of metal.

  • @MarkMichalowski
    @MarkMichalowski Před 8 dny

I'm watching the Saturday evening transmission at the moment, and a few more things are coming to mind...
1 - If Susan Twist was somehow based on Sutekh knowing about Susan Foreman, why did all the Susan Twists look identical - but not at all like the actual, original Susan?
2 - Why is Spoon Lady still alive? And what, really, was the point of her? The dead daughter was a really moving touch, though (as you've noted, Phil).
3 - When Ruby asks who Sarah and the fourth Doctor were, why does the Doctor lie? He's already told her that Time Lords can change their faces.
4 - If, in "73 Yards", Roger had made some mention of the compulsory DNA testing - just as a throwaway - it would have tied in better.
5 - So the Doctor colluded in creating the DNA database?? - "Guess who invented the security?"
6 - The search for the perfectly normal woman that is Ruby's mum takes up a stupidly disproportionate amount of time that could have been spent on coming up with a smart plan to defeat Sutekh. Unfortunately, that's not where RTD decided he wanted to expend effort, is it?
7 - How did Sutekh/Mel teleport/time travel Ruby and the Doctor from 2046 back to the UNIT tower?
8 - And whilst the Doctor and Ruby fasten Scooby Doo's lead and fanny around for 30 seconds, Scooby just stands there doing nothing but growling? Really??
9 - Why is the TARDIS suddenly responding to a dog whistle? Why not a finger click like we've seen before?
10 - Why is there suddenly a laser thing under the console, one that fired out of the the BACK of the TARDIS instead of the front???
    11 - WTF? generally.
12 - "Everybody lives!" - Rose's posture could do with some work, though: pull that stomach in, girl.
13 - Why does Susan Triad consider working for UNIT when, presumably, she's still a tech genius with a still-unexplained tech thingy that she was about to offer to the world. Huh? I'm guessing we're never going to find out, are we?
14 - Why does it take UNIT sooo long - considering the computing power at their fingertips - to do a simple database search to find Ruby's mum? Still, it gives the Doctor and Ruby time to change outfits.
    15 - More WTFery.
16 - I actually like the fact that despite the Doctor making the very good point that Ruby's mum has had over 7,000 days to find her, and couldn't be arsed, Ruby barges in there anyway. And guess what - it turns out OK (and actually quite touching, if a bit too saccharine). Although Ruby sobs "You left me where I was safe" - yeah, out in the snow in the middle of the night where I could quite easily have died of hypothermia, rather than outside a hospital. Great abandonning, mum. Way to go.
17 - Why doesn't the Doctor just say to Ruby, in the TARDIS: "Go and get to know your mum, and I'll skip forward a month, see if you're ready for some more adventures!" This whole season's been too short to have built up to this - they've barely spent any time together, really. So maybe the Doctor's just bored with her. The fact that when Ruby tells him she loves him he just responds with a slightly smug smile - oh, and some tears!! - is a bit weird.
    18 - I really need to get out more, don't I?
    19 - Night-night.

I enjoyed it but I agree, it was just another reset button and the whole explanation wasn't really that. It was nothing more than Sutekh scratching the vortex and the Doctor saying that's what was happening. Not sure how I feel right now about the story behind Ruby's mother. On the one hand I like that she was ordinary but it was also underwhelming after the build up. Surely there's somewhere between ordinary and special, it doesn't need to be the extremes each time. I liked the whole she's special because we think she is, thhat applies to many things in real life. What about the snow around Ruby, was that ever explained? The 73 yards stuff returning was cool.
They have to bring Susan/Carole Ann Ford back now after these hints.
