I am a huge Joy Division fan and have been for decades, but I would LOVE to hear Peter Murphy and NIN cover the Joy Division Catalogue. At least Ceremony, which was poorly recorded before Ian Curtis died.

Was fortunate enough to catch Peter Murphy in Atlanta around the Cuts You Up days. I've never seen a lead singer have more stage presence or total command of his backing band. It was like watching a goth version of Prince.
Completely agree. I saw him in PGH in a small venue called Graphitti with a girl named Sevi. What a fantastic night!!

@@billqs9974 Yeah, the only thing that bothered me was he didn't do Cuts You Up, and that was his signature track. Caught The Psychedelic Furs,a week later though, and Love My Way more than made up for it. Always wanted to see John Foxx, but alas.

My favourite song of all time covered by two of my favourite artists of all time - bliss.
Obviously they aren't trying to copy or be Ian. They are just covering a good song to pay respect to Ian Curtis and this amazing song. So stop being bitter and saying it sucks because it's "not Joy Divsion" that obviously wasn't the goal.

@@cbo2762 hmm, better than joy division? obv it's a matter of opinion but Joy Division are the one of the most important bands of the 20th century in terms of how many bands they influenced, even Murphy and NiN, as good as they are, would ever claim to have bettered JD's version

i really fucking adore this. my favorite joy division song rendered by one of my favorite vocalists (peter) and someone who i find eternally interesting and energizing (trent). beautiful stuff.

The song is simply great. I used to listen to it in late 80's. This cover is fantastic, adds modernity to Ian Curtis masterpiece, but is as deep as the original song.

In 2006, summer leg of the With_Teeth tour, Trent did a series of pre-show performances with Peter Murphy for radio stations, performing a series of covers and stripped down versions. This performance was from the Chicago date, where the entire band covered Joy Division songs.
NiN cover of Dead Souls was awesome and Trent with Peter and TV on the Radio was magical.
Reznor did a amazing job on Dead Souls for The Crow Soundrack. He should do a whole Joy Division cover album that would be out of this world.

Definitely, granted. James O'Barr (the creator of The Crow and writer of the comic the film is based on) had to really push Reznor to do that cover of Dead Souls. As Reznor saw Joy Division's music as untouchable.

People are probably gonna hate me for this but I like this version better than the original. But we wouldn't have this without it so I am glad it exists. Also wonder what a version with Trent Reznor singing it would sound like.

+Sérgio Fernandes Best cover of a JD song I've heard but with Peter and Trent, not surprised. Best cover ever (to me anyway) with a bit of irony is The Man in Black, Johnny Cash - Hurt. Even Trent when he heard said it felt like someone had stolen his girlfriend. The song wasn't his anymore. Give it a listen you may or may not like it. To me, it's heartbreaking. Still play Trent's of course but Cash knowing death was close gives it literally something inside me I can't, we don't have words for.

Agree completely that Ian C had the perfect intensity and anguish for his lyrics. I think what other singers and bands miss when they try to cover Joy Division is that Ian Curtis was someone trying to hold the pain and grief he felt *within* himself when performing and was trying to *transform* those feelings into poetry when he wrote. Many covers I've encountered try to outdo the original in some way, and miss the point completely. If you really want to cover Joy Division and make something of it, you have to find something that's *NOT* in the original song that's something you feel strongly about.
That said, this is a good cover because it's simple and respectful.
That goes without saying. And I don't think I detract from that when I say this cover is unspeakably inspired.
