    Not going to lie - this has been my favourite video so far. I was studying music production at college, surrounded by likeminded people, we started a nightclub brand throwing events in our city, all making music and bouncing ideas off each other 24/7, had a top quality teacher who was always available to give you a hand, etc. Since finishing 2 months ago, I've started full time work at a call centre, and I've literally lost all my drive for music. I DJ at home 2-3 times a week (when I used to be doing it daily), I open Ableton around once every 2 weeks and don't be able to motivate myself to keep it open for more than a few hours, and we all have less time to meet up and discuss our nightclub events. When I get home from work, as mentioned in the video, it's so much easier to indulge in the distractions (xbox, going out for a drink with some mates, etc), than it is to motivate myself to open up Ableton and work on some music.
    I decided last minute 3 weeks ago that I wanted to go to Uni, and I applied the same day. Since then I've been accepted (and I'm over the moon about this), but this video has practically tripled my excitement. After having a tour, I know that their equipment is top notch, the tutors all seem very switched on and genuinely passionate about helping the students, and I can't wait to be around more likeminded people and re-sparking my passion for music. I relate to near enough every point in this video and completely agree with your views, and it's made me really really excited to go - thanks John!

    Thank you so much for this video! I want to go and study music production at the University of East London in September. I would be going as a mature student (I'm in my 40s!) but I've been in bands and working with some great producers in some great studios and have been producing my own ambient music for most of my life. Any tips or advice regarding application?

    I'm currently finishing my final year of my Engineering extended national diploma.
    I'm going to some open days at Birmingham, Chester, London city and Leicester looking at studying music production.
    I'm hoping to go into audio Engineering for studio and live music, especially interested in producing. Alongside that I build guitars in my past time and hope to turn that into something on the side.
    Again, I can't thank you enough for this video, I'm 100% sure now.

    Hi love ur vids.
    The biggest problem i had with music production is that because i was an idiot and putting the volume too high when producing with headphones i basically fucked up my right ear and i can only hear enough to have some “stereo” image.
    This made me stop producing on headphones because i was afraid of going deaf, was producing only on weekends instead of like 10 hours a day everyday from 18-20 years old.
    Im 25 now and i did not stop producing because this is my passion, this is the thing i love the most the problem is it doesnt make any money.Hardware synthesizers and ambient music with “racks” made rediscover my passion with music.
    The thing is i do not want to produce with headphones because of my ear problem so i will have to buuild a home studio with yamah speakers, but how do u young gyus do this ? Do you rent 1 house to live and 1 house to make music ? Do you annoy your neighbours by producing in the same house you live in ?
    I am not attacking i am honestly trying to know how to build a home studio without renting 2 appartments or literrally buying a whole apartment just to make it a studio.
    I dont want neighbours to hear my music.
    Sry for the long text, and continue making great videos.

    Hi John. I've got a question hope you will answer. You say that it is better to study music production, than spend a lot of money on gear, plugins etc. Im 46 years old and i am a huge music lower who have tried to make music for several years now only to find out the very same thing you speak of. But if you dont have the money to go to college, what do you do then ?
    I've tried a several online courses(the ones you pay about 10-20 pounds a month) but it's just not very professional. I mean the sound you get out of it is just weak an amateurish.
    My question is this. What do you do when you are on a low budget ?
    There are tons of video material to view out there but what do i focus on ? Do i start with eqing or with compression, samplers, synths.
    I consider myself as an ok experienced producer, but i feel that i am missing that last bit that makes my music sound professional. I mean its easy to listen to music and analyze what they do, but its very difficult to make it myself. Even if its a simple sounding piece of music.
    I should properbly say that i am most into EDM and that sort of thing. I like the sound of Hardwell, Alesso but my musical inspiration comes from the early days of depeche mode. I was a teen in early 80 and some kept their guitars and drums and some of us went an bought a synth. Human League, Yazzo you know.
    Thanks for a very informative an very down to earth way of teaching things. Really enjoy it

    • @TheAudioJourney
      @TheAudioJourney  Před 7 lety +2

      Hey DJ Nordberg, thanks very much for the comment, that's a great question!
      When I started music production, I found the exact same thing to be true. There were no resources that helped beginners learn the basics well, in a professional manner. That's why this channel was started, but you're more experienced than a beginner.
      My recommendation to you would be to look at Pyramind. They offer a mentorship program where you can get one on one tuition with professional producers, and you can check out their profile to work out who has the most relevant expertise to teach you! It's not all that cheap, but it's the best kind of tuition out there without school.
      You can book one off sessions with no obligation to rebook, here is the link: www.pyramind.com/mentorship/
      Let me know if you have any more questions!

  • @veerstrynghthynner9496

    I watched this vid with particular attention because I once seriously contemplated studying at SAE, too, many years ago. After much pondering and discussion, my family was prepared, in principle, to borrow me the huge college fee required. I can't remember how much SAE charged, at the time, but the amount would still have been in the region of my annual income, later on, in my first, low-paid job - and, therefore, have piled on the pressure even before starting proper. And that still more augmented by the fact that failure was not an option: my family is not rich, and so their kind offer would also mean colossal sacrifice, on their part. Which, logically, were to put a hell of a lot of responsibility on my shoulders, and, simultaneously, rob me categorically of the crucial error margin to test my confidence in. Without, presumably. too much loss of face, if failure were to come to pass for real. Moreover, me failing would determinedly lose my family a stonking fortune, which I, in turn, would never have been able to pay back! Besides, imagining the scale of the psychological fall-out, in the wake of such a disaster, makes me shudder even today!
    I wasn't too sure myself either, actually, at the time. As to whether I really had it in me to make it to the other end in one piece, I mean. So I ultimately declined, in the end: the risk, on balance, just too overwhelmingly big, on several counts. But I honestly still can't decide whether I should be glad or be sad because of that decision.

    • @TheAudioJourney
      @TheAudioJourney  Před 7 lety

      Thanks for the comment Veerstryngh, and thanks for sharing your story. This is very common, the SAE is expensive and it can seem like a big decision with risk involved! You should only do what you can afford to do, and there is plenty of resource available to learn online without huge course fees.
      I hope you still end up learning music production!

    • @veerstrynghthynner9496
      @veerstrynghthynner9496 Před 7 lety

      To me, the fee SAE charges is, without a sliver of a doubt, deciding on attending the course or not. Unless your parents are rich, of course. But for relatively poor kids, as I myself was at the time of decision-making, it added substantially to the cons. I'm sure that without that combination of impositions attendant (obligations to my family - the moral ones of the moment, but the financial ones as well, stretching heaven knows how far into the future - I'd most certainly have jumped for the chance to attend.
      However, within these very pressures, failure for real may perhaps already have been in-built, practically, as I see it now, since the very fear of failure would almost certainly have led to failure becoming a fact, sooner or later: any flexibility of learning being strangulated, in the longer run, just because of the never even slightly abating pressure of having to keep up with the rest. Without the merest chance to step back and re-evaluate.
      That, for me, was , in fact, the clincher for pulling out: I probably wouldn't have made it all the way up to graduation anyhow, in hindsight. I sincerely believe that.
      Maybe a subject to reflect further upon, in relation with your own SAE experiences and in assistance to those considering SAE as the next step to take, in one of your future videos...?

Like playing an instrument (i do play guitar, but not too well) etc? Great question. I think it's useful to know an instrument, but not essential. I don't know any instruments to a high standard, and I do alright. I'd recommend learning the basics of a piece of software like Ableton, but ultimately that's what you'll be learning there, so go for it!

    Do you have to of taken music as an "option" in Secondary School? I used it as a reserve as I had no space for the other things I wanted to, but will I still be accepted? Thank you for your videos, they are great! Don't stop what you are doing!
    (Also, you are the reason I got a launchpad :P)
    2nd thing lol - You mentioned doing something outside rather than doing the bare minimum. I am just about to start Year 11, my final year in secondary and the schools are pushing for you to start thinking where you are headed. Ever since I watched this video, I settled I want to do music production, and meet a fellow CZcams friend as he makes plans to do Music Production too in Cambridge Uni as so would be convenient for us to meet. However, less waffle, more straight to the point. I recently finished a radio course with common radio "Reprezent Essex" and they accepted me to apply and provide shows for them which will actually go out! - recording my pilot tomorrow! I started this BEFORE I even conceited the idea of anything Music-Production wise and started early January. If I put this on my application form for Uni or College or whatever, would that count as lack for a better term - not a bare minimum? Thank you for the help. All the best.

    • @TheAudioJourney
      @TheAudioJourney  Před 7 lety +1

      Hey there, thanks for the comment! Glad to hear you're enjoying the Launchpad :)
      I think it's a great option to take as long as you have a 'spare' option, i.e. you don't miss out on a subject you need for Uni/College. The quality of teaching isn't always great though, but I recommend checking out 'Rockshcool', they allow you to do graded exams like a musical instrument, but for production! www.rslawards.com/music/music-production
      That's amazing about the radio station, a great opportunity and great fun as well. This would count as going above and beyond the bare minimum for sure, it shows initiative and a genuine passion for the audio industry, but don't stop there! Get involved in as much as you have time to do. Good on you for getting stuck in!
      Be sure to get in touch with me directly via the links in the description if you'd like any further advice, and good luck with your GCSE's this year.

    Thank you for this video, I am in this exact seat right now, pondering if I should apply to SAE Institutes 2 year bachelor program in audio production or not. The big issue is the money, I can access the money with the help of student loan, but investing that much money for a program that might not even help me to repay it might seem like a huge risk, when you can learn everything online?
    But at the same time, every time that I try to learn the basics online, it just doesn't really work well, it's really difficult in how to compress right, eq right, reverb right, etc. So much information everywhere and everything just explodes in my face. That's why i'm considering that SAE might be a decent choice to learn everything structured from professionals with mentors in a cool environment, but it's a real gamble because of that huge dept loan..
    I am thinking that I could invest my loan money on a education that can at least pay me the money back, and at the same time always try to work on my music at the side, but that might be difficult because then you actually have to have discipline and do it..
    What is your opinion on SAE? I am considering SAE Amsterdam, they charge 20k Dollars for the 2 year program, and I don't really know what to chose.
    And also, Is SAE respected in the industry? Because if it's not, then it might be a bad idea?

    Most teachers aren’t in the industry sorry lol common misconception they just are teachers who got a degree I went to school but study on your own helped me way more in the real world

      @@TheAudioJourney HI i can basicly go to school for free -200$ month "online" im guessing whitout knoewing it, that it will give me a foundation i can then work out from insted of fumbling around blind on youtube/skillshare?? i know all or most the info is out there free but its not a subjet of monney for me or deep debth after , alsow i mean i have a wandering mind i guess i get distracted kinda easy usealy from memery i can grind a subjet for 1-2 months then i get distracted from other stuff like a new video game or music Equipment to look hours of reviews/ new tech stuff or just videos and movies. so structure kinda importent to me, i do set own goals, get deep into stuff, but rarly can hold focus on that subjct or matter for Longer periods "alone" , but where my issue is is not only if i sould go , but where is it worth to study to fill my needs??
      i have found thise 3 places.
      1. 343 LABS old dubspot school haveing this program > www.343labs.com/new-products/emp-complete-onine
      2. PointBlank Musik school having thise programs > www.pointblankmusicschool.com/courses/online/
      3. HOFA is a Bachelor’s degree program, i just dono if its worth the time to do this IF im not gonna record ppl or be in a recording studio, but i could be worng here, but it look impressive from all the modules > hofa-college.com/bachelor-studies/
      thise are afordable programs, but stilll im lost in what u would "need", i want to be a homestudio producer (bascily have all the gear for entry level studio now) , prob not record anything other then my own stuff for years to come and i would proberly mostly colab over internet , and buy singers voice to sing my lyrics stuff. i dont want to work in a studio for others, i might wanna mix/master for ppl from home to pay the bills - like for newer upcomming artist on a low budget /dropbox kinda thingy,
      i have my eye set on the HOFA program, i feel "maby" it willl teach me a little of everything, and build my base better, leader of school is into EDM whit his own studio too /same whit the 343LABS /pointblanck more EDM/pop focused, and im prob gonna make EDM thats why i have looked at thise programs, but the HOFA "promises more" but do i need more ?
